The best Cisco Meraki alternative depends on what you are replacing. Choose Ubiquiti UniFi when you want a hardware gateway with several management options and no UniFi cloud-management license. Choose HPE Networking Instant On when simple app-managed Wi-Fi and switching are the priority. Choose Fortinet when branch security, centralized firewall administration, and multi-site templates matter most. Treat TP-Link Omada SDN as a product family to investigate after confirming its exact gateway, VPN, and security capabilities for your design.

None of these is a guaranteed one-for-one replacement. A sound choice must match your number of locations, internet links, VPN topology, security subscriptions, wireless coverage, PoE requirements, support model, and the staff available to operate it.

What Cisco Meraki provides—and what an alternative must replace

Cisco Meraki is a cloud-managed platform spanning wireless access points, switches, security appliances, SD-WAN, mobile-device management, cameras, and sensors. Its central value is operational: an administrator can configure and monitor distributed equipment from one dashboard, use APIs, and provision equipment remotely. That model is particularly attractive when a small IT team supports several offices.

The MX68W illustrates the type of branch appliance buyers often have in mind. Cisco lists support for up to 50 users, 700 Mbps firewall throughput, 300 Mbps site-to-site VPN throughput, and integrated Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac Wave 2). Those are Cisco’s published specifications, not independent performance measurements, and real traffic depends on enabled security services, packet sizes, VPN encryption, and the rest of the design.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Before comparing products, identify which part of that proposition you actually need:

  • Central administration: one place to configure, monitor, update, and troubleshoot multiple sites.
  • Integrated branch security: firewall policy, threat prevention, filtering, logging, and remote-access or site-to-site VPN.
  • WAN and failover: multiple internet circuits, cellular backup, application prioritization, or SD-WAN policy.
  • Unified access and switching: access points, wired ports, PoE, guest networks, and consistent site templates.
  • Commercial model: predictable subscriptions, perpetual hardware ownership, support contracts, or less dependence on a vendor-hosted control plane.

An alternative that solves only wireless management is not equivalent to a full security and SD-WAN branch stack. Conversely, buying a security appliance with capabilities your team cannot operate can create more risk than a simpler platform.

Ubiquiti UniFi: flexible control without a UniFi cloud-management license

Why it fits

UniFi is the strongest documented choice when your main objective is centralized administration of a hardware-based network while avoiding a recurring UniFi cloud-management license. Ubiquiti recommends starting most deployments with a Cloud Gateway and identifies the UCG-Ultra as a device for small-to-mid-sized deployments. A Cloud Gateway combines routing, security functions, and the UniFi management software in one appliance, which can reduce the number of separate systems at a small site.

UniFi also documents local consoles, official hosted management, and self-hosting. That flexibility is useful, but it creates a design decision that Meraki normally hides behind its service: you must select, secure, back up, and support the control plane. A local console may remain available during an internet outage, while self-hosting shifts patching, authentication, certificates, and availability to your team or hosting provider. Hosted management reduces local infrastructure but introduces a dependency on that service and its account controls.

Where it is not a drop-in replacement

A UCG-Ultra is an alternative component, not a promise that one box reproduces every feature in a Meraki branch. Confirm how many access points, switches, VLANs, VPN peers, and WAN links the gateway supports in your intended configuration. Check performance with intrusion prevention, traffic inspection, and VPN encryption enabled rather than relying on an unloaded throughput figure. Determine whether you need separate wireless access points, PoE switches, cellular backup, or a dedicated security service.

Questions to answer before ordering

  • Will one administrator manage all sites from a local, hosted, or self-hosted console?
  • Who owns backups and recovery if the console fails?
  • What is the supported site-to-site VPN topology, and does it cover every branch-to-branch and branch-to-cloud connection?
  • Which features are included in the hardware purchase, and which depend on optional services or separate devices?
  • Can your staff troubleshoot a distributed system with several possible control-plane locations?

HPE Networking Instant On: simple app-managed access and switching

Why it fits

HPE positions Networking Instant On for small businesses that want straightforward setup and management of access points, switches, and gateways. HPE says setup and monitoring are available through its app and that security features are included at no extra cost. Those statements describe HPE’s product positioning; they do not prove equivalent firewall inspection, SD-WAN, or multi-branch behavior to a particular Meraki design.

Build the required scope explicitly

Start with the wireless and wired inventory: access-point count, coverage areas, client density, switch-port count, PoE budget, uplink speeds, and guest-network isolation. Then specify what the gateway must do. A small office that only needs internet access and basic segmentation has a different requirement from a branch with dual providers, encrypted links to headquarters, content controls, and a cellular backup circuit.

Ask for the exact Instant On gateway and access-point models, supported VPN types, WAN-link count, monitoring retention, firmware process, and any limits on sites or administrators. “Security included” is valuable for budgeting, but it should be translated into named functions—firewall policy, intrusion prevention, filtering, alerting, and logs—before you compare it with another platform’s security bundle.

When to choose it

Instant On is a sensible shortlist candidate when the organization values an approachable app workflow and does not need a deeply customized security or SD-WAN architecture. If you operate many branches, require complex templates, or need advanced threat controls, make the vendor document those workflows with your proposed models rather than assuming the small-business label implies feature parity.

Fortinet: a security-first branch architecture

What the platform combines

Fortinet’s FortiManagement Cloud brings FortiGate firewalls, FortiSwitch switches, FortiAP access points, and FortiExtender cellular gateways into one dashboard. Fortinet describes centralized provisioning, monitoring, maintenance, zero-touch deployment, templates, and network cloning across multiple sites. That makes it a strong candidate when the branch firewall is the center of the design and wireless, switching, and cellular devices should follow common policies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Subscription and skills are part of the product

Security appliances often have a larger distinction between the hardware and the services that enable threat intelligence, intrusion prevention, filtering, support, or advanced analytics. Obtain a written bill of materials that shows the appliance, required subscriptions, term length, renewal price, support level, and which features stop or change when a subscription expires. Confirm that every proposed switch, access point, and cellular gateway is supported by the management service and firmware train you intend to use.

Fortinet’s breadth can improve consistency, but it also increases operational responsibility. Plan who will create firewall policies, review alerts, handle certificate and identity issues, test firmware, and investigate a suspected compromise. A zero-touch rollout is useful only when templates are correct and there is a recovery path for an incorrectly provisioned site.

When Fortinet is the better fit

Put Fortinet near the top of the list when security inspection, centralized policy, and multi-site deployment controls outweigh the desire for the simplest possible interface. Size the FortiGate model against encrypted throughput and enabled inspection profiles, not just the internet circuit’s nominal rate. Include cellular failover requirements if a branch must remain reachable during a primary-link failure.

A proper evaluation starts with the exact controller or management service, gateway, switch, and access-point models. Document whether management is local, hosted, or hybrid; how sites are grouped; how firmware and configuration backups work; and what happens when the controller or internet connection is unavailable. Test the required VPN topology, WAN failover, policy routing, guest isolation, logging, and alerting in a pilot. Do not infer those functions from the presence of “SDN” in the product name.

Compare alternatives by the branch design, not the logo

1. Multi-site operation

List every location and identify the administrator workflow for adding a new site, replacing a failed appliance, changing a VLAN, and deploying a firmware update. Verify whether zero-touch provisioning is available, what credentials or licenses it requires, and whether a local technician can complete a replacement with only a shipped device and an internet connection.

2. WAN, VPN, and failover

Record each site’s internet speed, provider, public-address behavior, number of WAN links, and required VPN peers. Specify whether branches need hub-and-spoke, full mesh, cloud connectivity, remote-access VPN, or application-aware routing. Ask for model-level throughput under the security and encryption features you will actually enable. Include cellular failover when downtime has a material business cost, and define how traffic returns to the primary circuit.

3. Security and logging

Create a checklist of firewall rules, network segmentation, intrusion prevention, content filtering, malware or threat services, administrator identity controls, audit logs, alert delivery, and log-retention requirements. Map each item to a hardware model and subscription tier. A vendor’s statement that security is included does not demonstrate parity with another vendor’s security stack; the named controls and their operating limits matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Wireless and switching

Count access points by coverage area and client density, then count wired ports, uplinks, PoE devices, cameras, phones, and outdoor locations. Define guest access, employee and IoT segmentation, roaming expectations, and the maximum number of concurrent clients you need to support. Do not compare a Wi-Fi-focused package with a complete branch firewall and SD-WAN stack as though they were the same scope.

5. Lifecycle cost

Request comparable quotes for the same number of sites, gateways, access points, switches, cellular devices, security functions, support term, and expected ownership period. Include installation, replacement stock, shipping, training, configuration labor, cloud or controller hosting, and renewal prices. Current, region-specific total-cost figures are not established here, so no platform can honestly be named the universal cost winner.

6. Operational workload

Assess the skills already available. A local console or self-hosted controller may reduce dependence on a vendor cloud but requires your team to maintain availability, backups, access control, and updates. A hosted dashboard can simplify remote operations but makes account security, service availability, and export or recovery procedures important. Include deployment assistance and escalation support in the evaluation.

A practical selection process

  1. Inventory the current environment. Record sites, users, circuits, public addresses, VLANs, switches, access points, PoE loads, VPN peers, guest networks, and critical applications.
  2. Write a branch profile. For each site, state user count, expected internet throughput, peak VPN traffic, failover requirement, wireless coverage, wired-port count, and security controls. Use the busiest branch rather than an average branch for sizing.
  3. Separate mandatory from optional features. Mark requirements such as zero-touch deployment, cellular backup, local management during an outage, regulatory logging, or a specific VPN topology as pass/fail items.
  4. Choose a management model. Decide who owns the control plane, where it runs, how administrators authenticate, how configurations are backed up, and how a failed gateway or controller is recovered.
  5. Request same-scope bills of materials. Require model numbers, subscriptions, support terms, installation assumptions, renewal prices, and any excluded accessories. Ask vendors to state throughput with your intended inspection and VPN features enabled.
  6. Pilot one representative branch. Use a site with typical wireless density and at least one important VPN path. Test onboarding, policy changes, firmware updates, logging, failover, guest isolation, and recovery from a factory-replaced device.
  7. Document the operating runbook. Include administrator roles, backup locations, escalation contacts, replacement steps, subscription renewal dates, and the procedure for losing internet or cloud access.
  8. Roll out in stages. Migrate a low-risk site first, compare real traffic and support effort with the branch profile, then expand only after the acceptance checklist passes.

Migrating from Meraki without avoidable outages

Before the cutover

  • Export or document VLANs, addressing, DHCP reservations, firewall rules, VPN peers, wireless networks, guest policies, DNS settings, and device inventories.
  • Lower DNS and application failover timers where appropriate, and schedule the change during a tested maintenance window.
  • Prepare an out-of-band access method and a rollback configuration that restores the previous gateway and addressing.
  • Pre-stage the replacement controller, firmware, administrator accounts, certificates, templates, and licenses or subscriptions.

During the cutover

  1. Confirm the new gateway has the correct WAN handoff, time source, administrator access, and backup configuration.
  2. Move one network segment or a pilot site first; verify DHCP leases, DNS resolution, internet access, and internal routes.
  3. Bring up site-to-site VPNs and test both directions between every required application and branch.
  4. Adopt switches and access points, check PoE and uplink status, then test employee, guest, and IoT policies separately.
  5. Test the secondary WAN or cellular path by intentionally failing the primary circuit, and record recovery time and changed public addresses.
  6. Monitor logs and client experience for a complete business cycle before decommissioning the old equipment.

Common failure modes

  • VPN comes up but applications fail: check overlapping subnets, return routes, NAT exemptions, and security policies in both directions.
  • Wireless clients connect without internet: verify DHCP options, DNS, default routes, VLAN tagging, and the switch port’s native and tagged networks.
  • Remote management disappears: confirm the control plane’s DNS and outbound requirements, administrator permissions, certificate validity, and local fallback access.
  • Failover works but sessions break: identify applications that bind to the primary public address and define whether they need a different design or manual recovery.
  • Performance is below the circuit rate: compare encrypted and inspected throughput with the vendor’s model limits; enabling security services can reduce available capacity.

Which alternative should a small business choose?

Choose UniFi when management flexibility and hardware ownership are more important than having a vendor-operated, opinionated control plane, and you can take responsibility for the chosen console or hosting model. Choose Instant On when app simplicity for access points and switches is the dominant need and your gateway, VPN, and security requirements are modest and verified. Choose Fortinet when the firewall and security program drive the architecture and you have the expertise and budget for subscriptions and ongoing policy operations. Investigate Omada SDN only after a model-specific proof confirms the branch functions you require.

The final decision should follow a same-scope design and pilot. The number of sites, WAN speeds and providers, VPN architecture, security obligations, technical capacity, support expectations, and country-specific pricing can change the result more than the product label.
