For IBM i teams, an “easy button” for CIS compliance can mean automating benchmark-based configuration checks and reporting—not earning a universal compliance certificate or safely fixing every finding with one click. Vanguard Integrity Professionals’ eBook describes that narrower role for its Vanguard Compliance Manager for IBM i (VCMi). Whether it saves useful effort depends on platform and benchmark fit, what the tool actually changes, and how your team reviews results.

What VCMi says it automates

Vanguard’s 14-page eBook describes VCMi as an IBM i product. Administrators select a CIS baseline, with the eBook referring to Level 1 or Level 2 security standards for IBM i. The interface is described as menus navigated through an emulated 5250 terminal session. Checks are organized by IBM i operating-system version, VCMi baseline, and category; users can launch CIS benchmark audits and view results and reports. Vanguard’s eBook presents the workflow as a way to assess system configuration against a selected benchmark and produce reports for auditors or executives.

Vanguard says the product can run “hundreds of configuration checks in minutes” and that manual audits “that traditionally span weeks are reduced to hours.” Those are claims in the vendor’s promotional eBook, whose publication year is not shown; no independent timing study or comparison method is provided. The eBook also says automated checklist enforcement eliminates human errors, but that is not an independently validated guarantee.

Assessment is not the same as compliance

A benchmark assessment can help identify configuration gaps and organize evidence, but the eBook describes checks and reporting—not a one-click certificate or proof that every legal, regulatory, contractual, or organizational obligation is met. Compliance programs can require controls beyond a system’s benchmark settings, as well as documented ownership, approvals, exception handling, and ongoing review.

Keep three functions separate when evaluating any “compliance automation” product:

  • Assessment: Which settings does it inspect, and how are failures or exceptions represented?
  • Remediation: Does it only identify a setting, or can it change it? If it can make changes, which require approval, and how are testing and rollback handled?
  • Evidence: What reports or records can be exported, and do they show the benchmark version, system scope, findings, exceptions, and remediation history you need?

The eBook does not establish which VCMi settings it remediates, what approval or rollback controls it offers, or which evidence export formats and integrations are available. Do not infer those capabilities from the word “automation.”

Confirm IBM i and benchmark fit before buying

Baseline selection only helps if the product covers the systems and profile you actually run. Vanguard’s eBook discusses IBM i baselines and security levels, but the current supported-version matrix was not available in the sources reviewed. Before relying on VCMi, ask Vanguard to confirm support for your exact IBM i releases, the CIS Benchmark versions represented, and the profile or level you intend to apply.

A buying conversation should also establish:

  • Which benchmark checks are included, and how exceptions or organization-specific settings are handled.
  • Whether assessments can be repeated to detect configuration drift, and how often they run.
  • Which findings can be remediated automatically, if any, and what change controls, testing, and rollback options exist.
  • What reports can be exported, who can access them, and whether they fit your audit workflow.
  • What implementation, tuning, and ongoing review your team must still own.

A sponsored TechChannel profile dated October 6, 2025, describes VCMi as a CIS-based IBM i compliance product and advertises Vanguard support and a 90-day proof of concept. Because the article is sponsored and the offer may change, confirm current terms and availability directly. TechChannel’s sponsored VCMi profile should be treated as promotional coverage, not an independent product evaluation.

Where infrastructure automation fits—and where it doesn’t

Automation can be useful at different scopes. CIS’s official webinar page describes a partnership with Puppet involving CIS-CAT Pro Assessor integration into Puppet Comply and CIS Benchmark enforcement modules. That is an example of infrastructure configuration automation, not evidence of current IBM i coverage or proof that a deployment satisfies FedRAMP, PCI DSS, NIST, or another program. Puppet’s page likewise does not establish current product status or IBM i support.

A separate Automox Worklet page documents one discrete Linux hardening task: disabling root SSH login. It illustrates why even a narrow automated change needs prerequisites and validation; it does not make Automox an IBM i compliance option. Broad platform automation and an IBM i-specific benchmark assessment solve different problems, so verify scope rather than assuming one tool covers both.

How to compare options for your environment

Comparison point What to verify
Platform coverage Exact operating systems and releases supported; VCMi is described by Vanguard as IBM i-specific, while the cited Puppet and Automox examples do not establish IBM i coverage.
Benchmark coverage Benchmark versions, security levels, and profiles represented, including how updates are handled.
Assessment versus change Which controls are checked, which can be changed, and what approval and rollback safeguards exist.
Evidence and repeatability Report formats, audit history, recurring assessment or drift detection, and fit with existing evidence workflows.
Operational ownership Required IBM i expertise, support scope, configuration management integrations, and customer implementation work.

The Center for Internet Security’s webinar page says that securing infrastructure against widely used compliance frameworks can demand too much time, effort, and money for many organizations to ensure adequately at scale. That observation supports the case for automation; it does not show that automation removes the need for platform-aware review and accountable operations.
