Cirrus Logic is primarily an audio and high-performance mixed-signal (HPMS) chip supplier, while Synaptics operates a broader platform business spanning touch, display, biometrics, wireless connectivity, processors, multimedia and edge-AI systems. The companies can both supply components used in connected devices, but their portfolio centers and design-in decisions are different: Cirrus usually enters through audio or adjacent mixed-signal functions, whereas Synaptics often combines human-interface, connectivity, processing and sensing functions.
The short answer
Cirrus Logic organizes its products into two principal groups: Audio and HPMS. Audio products include amplifiers, codecs, smart codecs, converters and standalone digital signal processors (DSPs). HPMS products include camera controllers, haptics and sensing devices, and battery and power integrated circuits. The company highlights smartphone audio, while also serving laptops, tablets, augmented- and virtual-reality headsets, wearables, home theater, automotive entertainment and professional audio.
Synaptics covers a wider functional range. Its portfolio includes touch and display controllers, biometric technologies, wireless connectivity, processors, video and vision products, and audio and speech processing. Its current positioning emphasizes edge artificial intelligence, Core IoT and OEM platforms that combine processors, connectivity and sensing. Astra processors and wireless solutions are part of that strategy.

Portfolio centers: what each company actually sells
Cirrus Logic: Audio first, then adjacent mixed-signal functions
Cirrus Logic’s product structure makes audio the clearest entry point. Its audio catalog covers the signal chain between a digital source and a speaker, microphone or other analog component. The listed categories are:
- Amplifiers for driving speakers and other audio loads.
- Codecs and smart codecs that combine conversion and audio-processing functions.
- Converters for moving between digital and analog representations.
- Standalone DSPs for programmable or configurable audio processing.
The second group, HPMS, extends beyond audio without abandoning the company’s mixed-signal orientation. It includes camera controllers, haptics and sensing solutions, and battery and power ICs. These devices can increase the amount of Cirrus content in a product that already uses its audio components, especially where the design needs tightly coordinated analog, digital and power functions.
Cirrus describes smartphone audio leadership as a strategic priority. Its stated plan also calls for increasing HPMS content in smartphones and expanding into additional applications and markets. In practice, that means the company is not limited to a single speaker amplifier or codec opportunity; it can pursue a broader set of chips around the phone’s audio, camera, haptic, sensing and power subsystems.

Synaptics: human interface, connectivity and processing
Synaptics starts from a different center of gravity. Touch and display technologies address how a person interacts with a device, while biometrics can authenticate that person. Around those functions, the portfolio includes wireless connectivity, processors and multimedia technologies such as video, vision, audio and speech processing.
The company’s current description presents these functions as building blocks for intelligent, connected products. Rather than treating a processor, a wireless radio and a sensor as unrelated chips, Synaptics emphasizes OEM platforms that bring them together. Its edge-AI message means more computation can occur near the device or sensor instead of sending every task to a remote service. Core IoT is the business framing for connected products outside the traditional mobile-phone market.
Astra processors and Synaptics’ wireless solutions support that edge and IoT direction. The portfolio therefore reaches from a user’s touch input to the local processor that interprets data, the wireless link that moves it, and the vision, voice or biometric function that makes the device responsive.

How their end-market exposure differs
Cirrus Logic’s application map
Cirrus’ applications are broad, but they connect back to its signal-processing and mixed-signal strengths. Smartphones are the most prominent strategic market because premium phones require sophisticated speaker amplification, audio conversion, noise and voice processing, haptics, sensing and power management. Laptops and tablets use similar audio and power functions in different form factors. AR/VR headsets add demanding audio and sensing requirements. Wearables need compact, low-power mixed-signal devices, while home-theater and professional-audio equipment can prioritize fidelity and channel capability.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Automotive entertainment is another stated application. In that setting, Cirrus components can be part of the vehicle’s audio subsystem rather than a general-purpose vehicle computer. The company’s application list should not be read as proof that every Cirrus chip is qualified for every vehicle, headset or phone; qualification depends on the specific component, customer design and regional or industry requirements.
Synaptics’ application map
Synaptics reports a wider set of connected-device categories: mobile, PCs, smart home, industrial and automotive, along with other connected products. Touch and display remain important in mobile and PC designs, but the same interaction technologies can appear in appliances, control panels and industrial equipment. Wireless connectivity and embedded processors make the portfolio relevant to smart-home and industrial devices that need local intelligence.
Automotive and industrial products can demand long support cycles, specialized environmental qualifications and carefully controlled software. Synaptics reports presence in those application groupings, but it does not provide a component-by-component qualification matrix. An OEM must therefore confirm the exact part, operating conditions, software support and lifecycle commitments before selecting a device.
Strategy: expansion around a core versus a platform portfolio
Cirrus’ expansion pattern
Cirrus’ strategy can be understood as increasing content around audio. The company seeks to preserve leadership in smartphone audio while adding HPMS devices that solve nearby problems such as haptics, sensing, camera control and battery or power management. This approach can give an OEM a reason to evaluate several Cirrus components in one product, even when the initial design win is an audio chip.
Expansion into laptops, tablets, headsets, wearables, home theater, automotive entertainment and professional audio reduces dependence on a single device category in principle. However, the available company description does not provide a matched revenue split for those markets in this comparison, so the application list should not be interpreted as a ranking of current sales.

Synaptics’ platform pattern
Synaptics frames its strategy around edge AI and Core IoT while retaining established human-interface and connectivity businesses. The platform idea is broader than adding one adjacent mixed-signal component: an OEM can combine a processor, wireless connectivity and sensing or interface technology to build a connected product with local intelligence.
This does not mean every Synaptics customer buys a complete platform or that every product uses all of the company’s functions. It means the company’s portfolio and messaging are designed to address several layers of a device architecture. Product teams should evaluate whether that breadth reduces integration work or introduces extra software, certification and supply-chain dependencies for their particular design.
Financial context: useful figures, but not a like-for-like size test
The available filings cover different fiscal periods. Cirrus Logic’s product and strategy description comes from its FY2025 annual report, filed May 23, 2025. Synaptics’ financial figures come from its FY2026 Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended June 27, 2026, filed August 10, 2026. Because the periods and disclosures are not aligned, these figures should not be used to declare that one company is larger or growing faster than the other.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Synaptics FY2026 measure | Reported value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Net revenue | $1,197.2 million | Synaptics fiscal year 2026; company-reported figure. |
| Year-over-year net-revenue change | 11.4% increase | FY2026 compared with Synaptics FY2025. |
| Enterprise and Automotive application revenue | $641.1 million | Company-defined FY2026 application grouping. |
| Core IoT application revenue | $389.7 million | Company-defined FY2026 application grouping. |
| Mobile application revenue | $166.4 million | Company-defined FY2026 application grouping. |
| Comparable Cirrus Logic revenue in the same period | Not stated | The cited Cirrus FY2025 annual-report material is used here for products and strategy, not a matched FY2026 financial comparison. |
The Synaptics application totals illustrate how the company reports its business across Enterprise and Automotive, Core IoT and Mobile. They are not a product-by-product equivalent to Cirrus’ Audio and HPMS groupings. One category can contain several technologies and customer types, so adding the figures does not tell you how much revenue came from a specific chip family.
Where the companies overlap
Both suppliers can participate in the audio portion of a connected product. Synaptics lists audio and speech processing among its multimedia technologies, while Cirrus is organized around audio components and related DSP and conversion functions. Both can also appear in smartphones, PCs, automotive products and other connected devices.
The overlap is therefore functional and market-based, not proof that the companies offer interchangeable parts. A Cirrus audio amplifier and a Synaptics embedded processor solve different problems even if both are present in the same laptop. Conversely, a Synaptics audio or speech device may compete for a particular design function without making Synaptics an audio-focused equivalent to Cirrus.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Design teams should compare the exact part numbers, interfaces, software requirements, package constraints, power behavior, lifecycle and qualification status. Company-level labels are useful for narrowing a vendor list; they are not sufficient for a schematic or bill-of-materials decision.

Because these are component suppliers rather than consumer-device brands, the right choice starts with the subsystem and product requirements. Use the following sequence before requesting samples or committing to a design.
- Define the primary function. If the immediate requirement is speaker amplification, audio conversion, a codec, an audio DSP, haptics, sensing or a related power function, Cirrus’ stated portfolio is the natural first screen. If it is touch, display, biometrics, wireless connectivity, embedded processing, vision or a broader connected-device platform, start with Synaptics’ relevant group.
- Map adjacent functions. List the other chips and sensors that must work with the primary device. Cirrus may be attractive when audio and nearby HPMS functions can be coordinated. Synaptics may be attractive when processing, wireless connectivity and sensing need to be planned as one edge-IoT architecture.
- Check the target market. Match the intended product to the supplier’s stated applications, such as mobile, PC, wearable, automotive, industrial or professional audio. Treat an application mention as an indication of focus, not an automatic qualification for your exact product.
- Validate technical fit. Confirm electrical interfaces, analog performance requirements, compute and memory needs, wireless standards, package and thermal limits, operating conditions, software or firmware support and available development tools for the specific component.
- Review lifecycle and qualification evidence. Ask for the current product-status document, automotive or industrial qualification where relevant, expected longevity, change-notification policy and regional supply information. The company-level filings do not establish these details for every part.
- Compare total integration effort. Include driver or firmware work, tuning, certification, acoustic or sensor calibration, manufacturing tests and support. A component with more integrated functions can reduce the number of separate devices, but it can also increase software and validation dependencies.
- Prototype the riskiest function first. Use the supplier’s evaluation hardware or development kit where available, and test the actual speaker, display, sensor, enclosure, wireless environment and power budget. Do not infer performance from a company’s broad portfolio description.
Synaptics Astra Machina development kits
One physical product associated with this comparison is the Synaptics Astra Machina Foundation Series modular development kit. Synaptics identifies these kits as tools for prototyping SL-Series embedded processors. That makes them relevant to engineers evaluating the company’s edge-processing direction, not to consumers looking for a replacement part or a finished device.
The kit should be treated as an engineering aid: its value is in bringing up an embedded processor, experimenting with software and interfaces, and assessing a system architecture before custom hardware. Marketplace availability, current model naming and retailer participation can change, so confirm those details with the current Synaptics product information before ordering. The kit does not represent Cirrus Logic’s audio or HPMS portfolio and is peripheral to the broader company comparison.

Synaptics’ FY2026 filing says the company signed a merger agreement with onsemi on June 25, 2026. In the filing context supplied here, that transaction should be described as pending, not completed. A merger agreement can still require shareholder, regulatory or other closing conditions, and its status can change after an annual report is filed.
This corporate event does not change the functional comparison by itself. Common interpretation mistakes
Mistake: treating the companies as direct substitutes
Cirrus’ Audio and HPMS organization and Synaptics’ human-interface, connectivity and processor portfolio overlap only in selected functions. A vendor comparison should be made at the chip and subsystem level, not by assuming that one company can replace the other across an entire product.
Mistake: comparing unlike fiscal years
Synaptics’ $1,197.2 million FY2026 revenue and 11.4% year-over-year increase are tied to Synaptics’ fiscal year ended June 27, 2026. Cirrus’ cited material is a FY2025 annual report used for product and strategy information. Without aligned periods and consistent definitions, those figures cannot support a claim about relative company size or growth.
Mistake: adding application categories as if they were product lines
Enterprise and Automotive, Core IoT and Mobile are Synaptics’ reported application groupings. They describe where revenue is assigned, not individual chip families. Cirrus’ Audio and HPMS labels are product groupings, so the two taxonomies should not be placed in a single league table as though they measured the same thing.

Mistake: assuming an application list guarantees qualification
A company can serve automotive, industrial, wearable or professional-audio customers while a particular part lacks the certification, temperature range, software support or lifecycle needed for your project. Request the component-specific evidence before design approval.
Which company fits which project?
| Project need | Initial fit | What to verify next |
|---|---|---|
| Premium phone speaker, codec, converter or audio DSP | Cirrus Logic is the more focused starting point. | Acoustic targets, interfaces, package, power, tuning tools and phone-platform qualification. |
| Phone design needing audio plus haptics, sensing or power content | Cirrus Logic may offer a broader set of adjacent HPMS opportunities. | Whether the exact components can be designed together and meet the device’s space and power limits. |
| Touch or display interface | Synaptics is the more directly aligned starting point. | Panel compatibility, firmware, gesture features, operating-system integration and lifecycle. |
| Connected edge device requiring processor, wireless and sensing | Synaptics’ edge-AI and Core-IoT portfolio is the more natural starting point. | Compute capacity, wireless certification, software stack, sensor support, security and thermal design. |
| Professional audio or home-theater equipment | Cirrus Logic’s stated application coverage is more directly relevant. | Channel count, conversion requirements, latency, control interfaces and product-specific support. |
| Prototype based on an SL-Series embedded processor | Synaptics Astra Machina Foundation Series development kit. | Current kit model, availability, supported software and the path from evaluation hardware to production silicon. |
Bottom line
Cirrus Logic and Synaptics are both semiconductor suppliers used inside OEM products, but they organize their businesses around different problems. Cirrus Logic is the more concentrated audio and mixed-signal specialist, extending from amplifiers, codecs, converters and DSPs into haptics, sensing, camera control and power. Synaptics is the broader interaction-and-connectivity company, combining touch, display, biometrics, wireless, processors, multimedia and edge-AI-oriented platforms.
Choose Cirrus when the design starts with audio or adjacent mixed-signal content and may benefit from adding related HPMS functions. Choose Synaptics when the design starts with human interaction, wireless connectivity, embedded processing or a connected edge system. For any real product, the final decision still depends on the exact component’s technical documentation, qualification, software, lifecycle and supply terms—not on the corporate label alone.
