Circle to Search works on a Chinese ColorOS phone only when the exact model, firmware region and Google services are eligible. On a supported device, update the Google app, choose Google as the default digital assistant, allow screen and app-data access, then long-press the navigation handle (gesture navigation) or the Home button (three-button navigation). ColorOS 15 includes the feature on selected OPPO devices, but a ColorOS version number alone does not guarantee that a Chinese-market build has it.
What you need before trying to enable Circle to Search
Circle to Search is an Android system feature, not a standalone application that you download. Google documents it for selected Android models, and availability can vary by country and device. OPPO announced it as a ColorOS 15 capability, but that announcement does not promise coverage for every Chinese-market build.
- A supported Android model: Eligibility is decided by the device and software combination. Two phones with the same ColorOS major version can have different feature availability.
- A compatible ColorOS/Android build: Chinese firmware may use different system components, regional settings or assistant integrations from an international release.
- Google services that can run the feature: You need the Google app and a way to update it. If your ROM does not include Google Play or the required Google components, the official setup may not be possible.
- Google as the digital assistant: The long-press gesture is routed through the default assistant, so another assistant or a disabled assistant permission can prevent the overlay from appearing.
- Screen and app-data access: Depending on the Android or Google-app wording, this may be called screen access, use screen and app data, or screenshot access.
Do not treat the presence of a ColorOS 15 label as proof of support. Google describes Circle to Search as a selected-device feature, and OPPO’s ColorOS 15 announcement does not state that every Chinese ROM receives it.

Official setup on ColorOS
Follow these steps in order. The labels can differ slightly between ColorOS releases and translations, but the functions are the same.

1. Check your model and software
- Open Settings and view the phone’s model, Android version and ColorOS version.
- Install any system update offered for your exact model and region.
- Check whether the phone has Google Play and the Google app. A Chinese ROM without those components may not expose the official Circle to Search controls.
There is no universal compatibility switch. If the feature is not available for the model or build, later steps cannot create official support.
2. Update the Google app
- Open Google Play.
- Tap your profile picture, then choose Manage apps and device.
- Open Manage and select the Google app.
- Install the update if an Update button is shown. If only Open appears, the installed version is current through that Play account.
Circle to Search is delivered through the Google app and system integration. Updating unrelated apps will not substitute for updating Google. There is no separate Circle to Search package that you need to find or sideload for the official method.
3. Make Google the default digital assistant
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app. Some translations shorten this to Digital assistant or place it under Assistant & voice input.
- Select Google as the default assistant.
- Enable Use screen and app data when that permission is offered. On some regional help pages the same capability is described as allowing screenshot access.
If Google is not listed, first verify that the Google app and Google services are installed and enabled. A third-party assistant, a disabled Google app or a ROM-level replacement can remove the documented trigger.
4. Confirm the navigation mode and trigger
The correct long-press target depends on the navigation system:

If the navigation handle is hidden, or if the ROM assigns the long press to another action, change navigation mode temporarily and test the matching trigger. Pressing the screen edge, Back button or Recents button is not the documented activation method.
5. Search what is on screen
- Open the page, image, video frame or app containing the item you want to identify.
- Long-press the navigation handle or Home button until the Google Search interface and glow appear.
- Circle, highlight, scribble around or tap the text or image. You can also select visible text where the interface offers that option.
- Read the results in the panel that appears at the bottom of the screen.
- Add words in the search bar to narrow the result, such as a color, location or product category.
The purpose is to search the current screen without switching to another app. Chrome does not have to be your default browser for the feature to work.

ColorOS and Chinese-ROM limitations
Why ColorOS 15 does not guarantee Circle to Search
OPPO’s ColorOS 15 announcement says users can start Circle to Search with a long press of the Home button or navigation bar. That is an announcement of platform capability, not a statement that every regional image, carrier build or Chinese-market model includes the integration.
Google separately limits Circle to Search to selected Android devices and notes that product availability varies by country and device. A Chinese ROM can therefore be on ColorOS 15 and still lack the Google assistant hook, the required Google components or the eligibility flag used by the Google app.
Google-service availability matters
Many Chinese-market firmware packages differ in whether Google Play, Google Play services and the Google app are preinstalled or enabled. The official procedure assumes that the Google app can be updated and selected as the assistant. If those components are absent, the missing setting is a compatibility or software-availability issue, not a hidden Circle to Search button.
Navigation settings can hide a working feature
Circle to Search is activated through the system navigation action. In gesture mode, pressing a physical or on-screen Home control will not necessarily invoke it; use the bottom handle. In three-button mode, press Home rather than the back or recent-apps button. If ColorOS has replaced the handle with a custom gesture, switch to the other navigation mode and test again.

Before changing system components, check each item in this order:

This checklist separates an eligibility problem from a settings problem. If the model and Google components are unsupported, repeating the same long press will not add the feature.

Official support versus an unofficial enabler
For restricted Chinese builds, the open-source OppoCTS project describes an enabler that uses Shizuku permissions and changes package-manager components so Google’s app recognizes the device as supported. This is not part of Google’s or OPPO’s support procedure. It modifies system behavior, requires additional permissions and can stop working after a firmware or Google-app update.

Use an unofficial enabler only if you understand the permissions and recovery implications. Keep the official method as the baseline, and do not assume that a successful modification means the phone is officially supported.
Common assumptions that cause wasted troubleshooting
- “ColorOS 15 means every OPPO phone has it.” OPPO announced the capability, while Google still limits availability to selected devices and regions.
- “I need Chrome as my default browser.” Google says Circle to Search does not require Chrome to be the default browser.
- “There must be a separate download.” The official path uses the Google app and system integration; no separate Circle to Search download is required.
- “Holding Home should always work.” Home is the documented trigger in three-button mode. Gesture navigation uses the bottom handle or bar.
- “An enabler makes the phone officially supported.” OppoCTS-style changes only attempt to make Google’s app recognize the device and remain unofficial.
Troubleshoot Circle to Search on a Chinese ColorOS phone
No Circle to Search setting appears
- Confirm that the exact model is among Google’s selected supported devices.
- Check the Android and ColorOS versions and install available system updates.
- Update the Google app through Google Play > profile picture > Manage apps and device > Manage.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app and select Google.
- Enable Use screen and app data or the equivalent screenshot-access permission.
- Search the Settings app for Circle to Search. If no result appears after these checks, treat the model or Chinese ROM as unsupported rather than looking for an undocumented switch.
Long-pressing does nothing
- With gesture navigation, hold the bottom navigation handle or bar, not the edge of the display.
- With three-button navigation, hold Home, not Back or Recents.
- Switch navigation modes and test the corresponding trigger. This distinguishes a navigation-routing problem from a missing feature.
- Verify that Google remains the default assistant and that screen/app-data access is still enabled.
The overlay opens, but selection or results fail
- Update the Google app again and restart the phone after the update.
- Check whether the permission was reset by a firmware update or assistant change.
- Try a simple visible image or text item to determine whether the problem is limited to one app or media type.
- Remember that unsupported firmware can sometimes display partial assistant behavior without providing a stable Circle to Search implementation.
The feature worked and then disappeared
Check for a recent Google-app or ColorOS update. Official eligibility can change when software components are replaced, while an unofficial enabler can be invalidated by either type of update. Recheck the assistant and screen-access settings before considering any modification.

Google recommends using Google Lens through the camera or the Google app as the alternative. Lens does not require the Circle to Search system trigger and is the appropriate fallback when the model or ROM is not eligible.
A practical decision path
- Is the model supported? If yes, continue. If no or unknown, check Google’s selected-device eligibility information; do not assume ColorOS 15 is sufficient.
- Can the Google app be updated? If no, resolve Google-service availability first. Without the required Google components, the official setup cannot be completed.
- Is Google the default assistant with screen/app-data access? If not, correct those settings.
- Does the correct long press open the glow and Search bar? Use the navigation-mode table to choose Home or the handle.
- Still unavailable? Use Google Lens, or evaluate an unofficial enabler only with a clear understanding that it is unsupported and update-sensitive.
What to expect when it is enabled
Circle to Search remains on the current screen while you mark the item you want to investigate. You can circle an object, highlight text, scribble around an area or tap a visible item, then refine the query from the Search bar. Results are shown in the on-screen panel, so the normal workflow does not require opening a separate browser first.
The exact result quality and available actions can vary with the content, language, region and Google services installed on the phone. Those variations do not change the activation requirements: supported hardware and software, an updated Google app, Google as the default assistant, screen/app-data access and the correct navigation long press.

A Google-app or ColorOS update may have changed eligibility, assistant routing or permissions. Recheck Google as the default assistant, screen/app-data access and the correct navigation trigger. If an unofficial enabler was used, an update may have invalidated it.
What can I use if my phone is not eligible?
Google recommends Google Lens through the camera or the Google app. Lens provides visual search without relying on the Circle to Search system trigger.
