Condition can change a vintage game’s desirability and price, but no label guarantees a premium. CIB describes which original components are present; sealed describes the condition and authenticity of the original wrap; graded describes an evaluator’s authentication, condition score and holder. To estimate value responsibly, compare the same game, platform, region, edition and condition using recent completed sales—not asking prices—and identify the grading company and designation.

What “CIB” means for a vintage video game

CIB stands for “complete in box.” At its simplest, it means the game is sold with its original box, manual and cartridge or disc. CGC states the core definition this way: “At its core, a CIB game consists of a game including the box, manual and game cartridge or disc.” That definition comes from CGC’s 100% CIB designation announcement published August 16, 2024.

CIB is therefore a contents description, not a grade and not a guarantee of a particular price. Two copies can both be called CIB while differing substantially in box wear, print variant, insert set, disc condition or authenticity.

What a stricter 100% CIB designation requires

CGC’s 100% CIB designation applies a more demanding checklist than the everyday use of “complete in box.” The box, cartridge and manual must match the game, and the package must include game-specific, console or publisher inserts and original packing materials when those items were supplied. Examples of packing materials include dust sleeves, cartridge trays and baggies.

Original plastic wrap is not required for CGC’s 100% CIB designation. Conversely, mismatched components and reproduction items can disqualify a copy. A seller who calls a game “100% CIB” is therefore making a more specific claim than a seller who simply says “CIB”; ask which standard is being used.

Questions to ask when a listing says CIB

  • Is the box the correct regional, platform and print variant?
  • Is the manual original, complete and matched to that edition?
  • Are the cartridge or disc and label authentic and in the expected format?
  • Which inserts and packing pieces were originally included, and are they present?
  • Are any pieces reproductions, replacements or from another release?
  • Does “complete” mean the seller’s own description or a named service designation?

A loose cartridge placed in a replacement box is not equivalent to a verified original package. It may still be collectible, but it should not be compared with a genuinely complete original copy.

What “sealed” means—and why the seal must be verified

Sealed refers to the original factory seal remaining intact. It is a statement about the exterior packaging, not a numeric condition score. A sealed game can have a crushed corner, a torn box under the wrap, manufacturing defects or a questionable reseal, so “sealed” alone does not describe the whole item.

Recognizing the types of original wrap

CGC’s grading-scale guidance describes plastic wrap as the traditional method of sealing video games, with variations including seams, overlaps and Y-folds. These construction details vary by platform, publisher and production run. They are useful evidence, but the presence of a seam or fold by itself does not authenticate a particular copy.

Inspect photographs at high resolution for consistent film tension, factory-style folds, appropriate seams and overlaps, and damage that appears to affect both wrap and box. Pay attention to whether stickers, tears or price labels sit on top of the wrap or beneath it. When photographs are insufficient, request additional views or use an experienced authenticator before treating a copy as factory sealed.

Sealed is not the same as complete

A sealed claim concerns the wrap. CIB concerns the presence and originality of components. Because a sealed package is not opened for inspection, a buyer may have less direct evidence about the exact contents, inserts or variant inside. Record both attributes separately: for example, “factory-sealed, variant unconfirmed” is more precise than simply “CIB sealed.”

What professional video-game grading adds

Grading is an evaluator’s assessment, not a price promise. CGC describes its video-game service as expert authentication, a numeric grade on a 10-point scale and encapsulation in a crystal-clear, tamper-evident holder. It says the service covers games and consoles across platforms including Nintendo, Sega, Atari, Sony, Microsoft and NEC, along with most international games and select cartridge-only games.

Authentication addresses whether the item and its components are genuine. The numeric grade describes condition according to the service’s published standard. Encapsulation protects the item and makes later handling more difficult, but it does not repair damage or prove that the market will pay more.

CGC numeric grades and seal letters are different measurements

CGC uses numeric grades for the game and packaging condition and separate letter grades for seal quality. Its seal scale describes A++ as a nearly perfect original seal with negligible handling or manufacturing defects. A+ indicates a very well-preserved seal with good eye appeal and several minor defects; lower letters represent progressively more significant defects. These are CGC’s standards, not a universal industry scale.

A copy can therefore have a strong numeric condition grade but a lower seal letter, or a high seal letter while the box has visible condition problems. Read both parts of the label rather than reducing the item to a single number.

VGA scores must be identified by service

Video Game Authority (VGA) offers a Standard 100-point scale and a Unified 10-point scale. VGA describes Unified as its own alternate display of the same evaluation and says its conversion reference is not intended to compare VGA grades with other grading companies. A score should always be written with the provider and scale—for example, “VGA Standard 85,” not merely “85.” A CGC 9.4 and a VGA Unified 9.4 are not established as equivalent.

Does grading automatically increase value?

No reliable universal premium can be assigned to a grade from the standards described by CGC and VGA. Those services explain authentication, scoring and presentation; they do not establish that grading raises resale prices by a fixed percentage or even in every transaction. A fee paid for grading is not evidence that the item’s market value increased by the same amount.

Demand, rarity, variant, eye appeal, buyer confidence, timing and venue can all affect the result. A common game in an expensive holder may not recover submission and shipping costs. A rare, difficult-to-authenticate copy may attract buyers who value a professional opinion, but that outcome must be demonstrated with comparable completed sales rather than assumed.

How to compare copies that are genuinely similar

Value comparisons fail when listings look alike but represent different products. Match the following attributes before drawing a conclusion.

Attribute What to match Why it matters
Identity Exact title, platform, region, release or print variant and edition Small packaging or production differences can represent different collectibles.
Completeness Loose, CIB, sealed or graded; original box, manual, inserts and packing materials A missing manual or reproduction insert changes the item being compared.
Authenticity Original cartridge or disc, box and seal; no reseal or counterfeit concern An apparent bargain may reflect unresolved authenticity risk.
Grade details Grading company, scale, numeric score, seal letter and special designations Scores from different services are not automatically interchangeable.
Transaction evidence Recent completed sale, sale date and venue Asking prices show ambition, not what a buyer actually paid.

If one of these fields is unknown, label the comparison as uncertain instead of treating it as like-for-like. A different region, print run, missing insert, suspected reseal or different grading company can make two superficially similar listings poor comparables.

A practical method for estimating what your game may be worth

  1. Identify the exact release. Record the title, platform, region, publisher, edition, catalog or product code when visible, and any known print or variant details. Photograph the front, back, spine, cartridge or disc, manual, inserts and seal.
  2. Classify the physical state. Use separate fields for loose, complete in box, sealed and graded. Note box dents, fading, tears, label wear, disc scratches, missing pages and replacement parts. Do not upgrade “complete” to “100% CIB” unless the required inserts and packing pieces are verified.
  3. Check authenticity. Compare the box construction, printing, labels, screws or other platform-appropriate features with known originals. For sealed copies, document seams, overlaps and Y-folds and investigate any film that appears added later. When evidence is inconclusive, describe the item as having an authenticity question.
  4. Collect completed-sale evidence. Search for the exact release and condition at multiple venues, and record the final sale amount, date, venue and whether shipping or buyer fees are included. Keep asking prices in a separate list.
  5. Normalize the comparisons. Remove or clearly note differences in region, variant, completeness, seal status, grade provider, holder and accessories. Do not average unlike copies.
  6. Estimate a range, not a guaranteed number. Use the closest recent sales and explain which differences push your copy above or below them. If no close sales exist, say that the evidence is insufficient for a precise estimate.
  7. Subtract transaction costs for a net estimate. Include grading, insurance, shipping, marketplace fees, taxes and the possibility of a return. A higher headline sale can produce a lower net result after these costs.

When professional grading is worth considering

Grading can be useful when authentication is difficult, the item is valuable enough to justify professional handling, a tamper-evident holder improves protection, or buyers in your target market specifically request a recognized service. It is less compelling when the game is common, condition is poor, the seal is questionable, or comparable sales do not support recovering the total submission cost.

Costs and turnaround are submission-specific

CGC lists Standard and Standard Bulk service tiers with estimated turnaround times and maximum fair-market-value limits. VGA lists its own pricing tiers and optional upgrades such as UV material, cleaning and grading-summary services. Prices, limits and turnaround estimates can change, and may depend on the submission date, geography, membership status, shipping and insurance.

Check the provider’s current service and pricing pages immediately before submitting. Select a tier whose value limit covers the item, and calculate the complete out-of-pocket cost. Neither a tier name nor a stated turnaround implies a resale premium.

Handling, storage and sale preparation

  • Handle cartridges, discs, boxes and manuals with clean, dry hands; support fragile boxes from underneath.
  • Keep paper, cardboard and manuals away from moisture, direct sunlight and rapid temperature changes.
  • Do not clean, reseal, flatten or replace parts before documenting the original condition. An intervention can reduce authenticity or comparability.
  • Photograph every component and any defect before shipping or listing.
  • For a graded item, photograph the label, holder and certification information and disclose cracks, scratches or replaced holders.
  • Describe uncertainty plainly. “Seal authenticity not independently verified” is safer and more useful than an unconditional factory-sealed claim.

Common valuation mistakes

Using an exceptional auction as the normal price

A record-setting result may reflect unusual rarity, timing, publicity or a uniquely strong copy. It is not a market statistic for every copy of the title. Use several recent, genuinely comparable completed sales.

Comparing grades without naming the company

CGC and VGA publish different systems, and VGA specifically cautions that its conversion reference is not intended to compare its grades with other companies. Always preserve the service name and scale in notes and listings.

Treating a reseal as factory sealed

Plastic wrap can be added after manufacture. If seams, folds, overlaps or the relationship between wrap and box raise questions, pause the valuation and obtain better evidence or expert authentication.

Assuming every insert is optional

For some releases, inserts and original packing materials are part of a stricter completeness standard. Missing or reproduction pieces should be disclosed even when the game still has its box and manual.

Ignoring net proceeds

Grading and selling involve fees, shipping, insurance and time. Evaluate the likely net proceeds rather than comparing a possible sale price with the grading fee alone.

The useful way to state a value conclusion

A defensible description identifies the item and the evidence: “North American [title] for [platform], original box and manual, no verified insert list, seal authenticity unconfirmed, compared with three completed sales from [dates] at [venues].” That format tells a buyer what is known, what is uncertain and why the estimate is only a range. CIB, sealed and graded are meaningful condition signals, but the market value still belongs to the specific copy and the specific transaction.
