Choose a CI/CD workflow based on where your team wants to define and operate releases: AWS CodePipeline models release stages in AWS, while GitHub Actions keeps workflows in repository YAML and runs them on GitHub-hosted or self-hosted runners. Then choose a deployment strategy separately, based on acceptable downtime, failure impact, traffic control, and the cost of replacement capacity. A hybrid design is also possible.

What CI/CD on AWS should automate

A CI/CD pipeline automates work triggered by changes to source code: building the application, running tests and checks, preparing an artifact or container image, and promoting that version toward deployment. AWS guidance recommends starting with a minimum viable continuous-integration pipeline, then adding delivery stages as the team is ready. Keep pipeline and infrastructure definitions under version control and review changes to them like application changes.

A production pipeline should do more than deploy. It should make the tested artifact identifiable, enforce the intended promotion controls, check application health after release, and give the team a known rollback path. Useful checks may include unit, integration, functional, static-analysis, performance, and application-security tests, chosen for the application rather than added indiscriminately.

CodePipeline or GitHub Actions?

This is primarily a choice about workflow ownership and operating model, not a choice between “AWS” and “non-AWS” deployment. Either system can participate in an AWS delivery architecture. CodePipeline models software-release stages as an AWS service; GitHub Actions defines workflows in a repository and responds to repository events or manual and scheduled triggers.

Decision AWS CodePipeline GitHub Actions
Where workflow definitions live In AWS pipeline configuration, organized around release stages. As YAML files in the repository’s .github/workflows directory.
How work runs Actions execute within pipeline stages; available parameters depend in part on pipeline type. Jobs run on GitHub-hosted virtual machines or self-hosted runners. Jobs can run sequentially or in parallel.
AWS access AWS-native orchestration can use AWS service actions and IAM roles. OpenID Connect (OIDC) federation can exchange a workflow identity token for short-lived AWS credentials, avoiding long-lived AWS keys stored as GitHub secrets.
Release controls Version 2 pipelines add release-safety and trigger-configuration parameters compared with Version 1. Workflows can use GitHub environments and configured protection rules; the actual gates depend on repository configuration.
Operational responsibility The team operates pipeline design and the AWS services and resources the release requires. The team operates workflow design and runner choices; self-hosted runners also require maintenance and security ownership.
Cost comparison Pipeline type affects pricing, and the wider AWS architecture may add service and infrastructure costs. Runner selection and usage affect costs and operations. The available documentation does not establish an apples-to-apples total-cost winner.

Choose CodePipeline when

  • AWS-managed release-stage orchestration fits the team’s operating model.
  • The deployment flow depends on AWS service integrations and the team wants the pipeline to be centered in its AWS environment.
  • Release stages, approvals, and deployment ownership are organized around AWS resources rather than repository events.

Choose GitHub Actions when

  • Keeping checks and workflow definitions beside the code is important to the team.
  • Repository events already drive the team’s automation, or the team has substantial existing workflow investment.
  • The team can secure the GitHub-to-AWS identity relationship and operate its selected runner model.

Use a hybrid model when responsibilities differ

For example, repository workflows can run pull-request checks while AWS services handle deployment and traffic shifting. This can suit teams with distinct code-review and production-release owners, but it creates boundaries that must be explicit: who owns the artifact, which identity can deploy it, where promotion approval occurs, which system tracks deployment state, and who initiates rollback. Hybrid is an architectural option, not a universally prescribed pattern.

Connect GitHub Actions to AWS without long-lived credentials

GitHub Actions supports OIDC federation with AWS IAM. Instead of saving permanent AWS access keys as repository secrets, a workflow requests an identity token and exchanges it for temporary credentials associated with an IAM role. The security benefit depends on restricting which workflow identities may assume that role.

  1. Configure the GitHub OIDC identity provider in IAM. Establish the federation relationship in the AWS account that owns the deployment role.
  2. Create a deployment role with a narrow trust policy. Restrict the accepted subject to the intended repository and, as appropriate, branch or GitHub environment. Do not use a broad subject wildcard where a specific identity can be named.
  3. Grant only the workflow permissions it needs. The workflow needs id-token: write to request an OIDC token; grant the assumed AWS role only the permissions required for its deployment tasks.
  4. Exchange the token for temporary AWS credentials. Use the AWS credential action in the workflow, then perform the required AWS operation with those credentials.
  5. Protect production promotion. Where GitHub environments are used, configure appropriate protection rules and scope the IAM trust relationship to the environment identity when that is the intended boundary.

Validate the subject-claim format actually issued for the repository before writing the trust condition. GitHub’s guidance notes a subject-claim format change for repositories created after July 15, 2026, and for repositories that opt in to immutable subject claims. A policy copied from an older example may therefore fail to match the current identity—or may be broader than intended.

Choose the deployment strategy separately

The pipeline orchestrator decides which stages run and when; the deployment service and strategy determine how the new version reaches compute resources and users. Choose a rollout by asking how much of the system may be affected before detection, whether old and new versions can coexist, how quickly traffic must be reversible, and whether extra capacity is affordable.

Strategy What changes Failure and rollback implications When to consider it
All at once / in-place Replaces the application on existing resources in one operation. AWS’s deployment comparison indicates downtime for deploy-in-place; recovery may require another deployment. Lower-complexity or cost-sensitive releases where downtime is acceptable.
Rolling Updates the fleet in successive batches. Restricts the initial affected portion, but old and new versions coexist during rollout. Compatibility between versions matters. Applications that can tolerate temporary mixed versions and need service capacity maintained during updates.
Canary / traffic splitting Initially exposes a small server subset or traffic share to the new version, then expands exposure if it appears healthy. Limits the initial blast radius only if health signals are meaningful and the team can stop or reverse traffic promptly. Risk-sensitive releases with production telemetry that can detect regressions before broad exposure.
Immutable Launches replacement resources and deploys the new version there, leaving the existing fleet untouched during rollout. Uses replacement capacity and takes longer than in-place in AWS’s comparative table; AWS lists redeployment as its rollback method. Changes where protecting the existing instances during rollout is more important than minimizing temporary capacity.
Blue/green Maintains old and new environments, validates the new one, then shifts traffic. Traffic can be switched back to the retained environment, but parallel capacity and traffic-routing setup are required. Releases needing validation before cutover and a rapid traffic switch if the new environment fails.

AWS’s deployment-method table gives comparative deployment-time markers of 1x for deploy-in-place, 2x for rolling, and 4x for immutable, traffic-splitting, and blue/green methods. These are relative values in that AWS table, not a universal performance benchmark or a promise of elapsed deployment time.

Match CodeDeploy behavior to the target platform

CodeDeploy’s available deployment types depend on the compute platform. EC2/On-Premises supports in-place deployments; EC2 supports blue/green replacement instances; and Lambda and ECS use blue/green deployments with canary, linear, or all-at-once traffic shifting. The EC2/On-Premises blue/green option applies to EC2 instances, so confirm the precise target and supported deployment type before designing around a pattern.

Two AWS delivery architectures

AWS-centered release pipeline

A typical sequence is source change, build and test, artifact or image publication, deployment, then health checks and post-deployment monitoring. CodePipeline models those release stages. For its documented ECS blue/green action, the deployment uses CodeDeploy and a load balancer to route traffic; the action consumes a container image and task-definition and AppSpec input artifacts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That ECS action is not a zero-setup deployment button. The required ECS and CodeDeploy resources, load-balancer resources, image repository, task-definition input, and AppSpec input must be in place. Establish ownership and versioning for these inputs so a release can be traced to the exact application and deployment configuration.

GitHub-centered delivery to AWS

A common split is to run build and test workflows on pull requests, then deploy after an approved merge or release event. The workflow YAML remains in .github/workflows; jobs execute on hosted or self-hosted runners. OIDC provides the AWS identity bridge, while IAM policy determines what the workflow can do in the account.

Separate validation from production authority. A workflow that tests untrusted pull-request code should not automatically receive the same AWS permissions as a protected deployment workflow. Scope role trust to the right repository identity and promotion context, and keep production approval controls aligned with the way the role is granted.

Questions to settle before implementation

  • What are the deployment targets? Identify whether the workload runs on EC2, ECS, Lambda, or another platform, and confirm which rollout types that platform supports.
  • What is the downtime tolerance? If any interruption is unacceptable, an in-place approach may not meet the requirement.
  • What is the maximum acceptable blast radius? Decide how much traffic or how many resources can receive a release before health is confirmed.
  • Can application versions coexist? Rolling and traffic-shifted deployments may run old and new versions at the same time; schemas, APIs, and shared state must tolerate that overlap.
  • Which signals trigger rollback? Define health checks and production metrics, who watches them, and the conditions that stop or reverse a release.
  • Who approves production promotion? Place that decision in the workflow and identity boundary the team can reliably enforce.
  • What is the security boundary? Specify which repository, branch or environment, runner, artifact, and IAM role may participate in production deployment.
  • What is the actual operating cost? Estimate pipeline usage, runners, AWS deployment services, and temporary or duplicate infrastructure at expected release volume. Pricing and total cost depend on the concrete design; the documentation does not provide a neutral head-to-head cost benchmark.

Measure delivery and release reliability

AWS recommends tracking build and deployment frequency, lead time, pipeline duration, production change volume, and build time to identify bottlenecks and changes in reliability. Establish a baseline for the application and use trends to find where releases wait, fail, or consume disproportionate effort; no universal target is established by the guidance cited here.
