Short answer: Kelley Blue Book’s current 2025-model estimates favor the Toyota Sienna for five-year ownership cost and projected depreciation. The Sienna also won Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 minivan resale award. Those results are estimates, not guarantees: trim, powertrain, mileage, financing, insurance, taxes, purchase price and vehicle condition can change the outcome.
Five-year cost comparison at a glance
The clearest apples-to-apples figures are Kelley Blue Book estimates for 2025 models. KBB combines estimated depreciation with estimated out-of-pocket spending over five years. The figures were checked in October 2026 and are methodology-specific, so they should not be treated as a quote for every trim, drivetrain or buyer.
| Measure | 2025 Toyota Sienna | 2025 Chrysler Pacifica | Difference in this KBB comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| Five-year total cost to own | $60,849 | $64,847 | Sienna lower by $3,998 |
| Estimated five-year depreciation | $18,570 | $24,000 | Sienna lower by $5,430 |
| Estimated five-year out-of-pocket costs | $42,279 | $40,847 | Pacifica lower by $1,432 |
The result is easy to misread if you look only at cash expenses. KBB estimates the Pacifica will cost less in out-of-pocket categories, but its projected loss in value is substantially higher. That larger depreciation estimate more than offsets the Pacifica’s out-of-pocket advantage, producing the lower Sienna total.

What each KBB estimate includes
KBB’s totals are made from two components: depreciation and out-of-pocket costs. The category details below are the values displayed for these specific 2025-model estimates.
| Out-of-pocket category | 2025 Toyota Sienna | 2025 Chrysler Pacifica |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel | $10,222 | $8,493 |
| Insurance | $14,475 | $13,275 |
| Financing | $4,936 | $5,010 |
| State fees | $5,839 | $5,366 |
| Maintenance | $5,127 | $6,769 |
| Repairs | $1,680 | $1,934 |
| Total out-of-pocket | $42,279 | $40,847 |
These line items explain why a headline total cannot be transferred to a different configuration. Insurance varies by driver and location, financing depends on the loan, state fees depend on jurisdiction, and fuel spending changes with annual mileage and local prices. Maintenance and repair estimates can also differ by trim, drivetrain and use.
Fuel is not the whole operating-cost story
The KBB display assigns the Pacifica a lower five-year fuel estimate ($8,493 versus $10,222 for the Sienna) while assigning the Sienna lower maintenance and repair estimates. Fuel savings can matter to a high-mileage household, but they should be evaluated alongside purchase price, expected resale value and your actual fuel type and local prices. A driver covering far fewer than 15,000 miles annually may see a much smaller fuel difference than the table suggests; a heavy commuter may see a larger one.
Insurance, fees and financing are personal variables
Insurance is the largest listed out-of-pocket category for both vehicles. KBB’s displayed estimates are not a substitute for a quote using your address, driving record, coverage limits and deductibles. State fees likewise depend on where the vehicle is registered and may be tied to transaction value or vehicle age. Financing costs change with the amount financed, annual percentage rate, loan term and down payment. Compare those inputs before treating a $3,998 modeled gap as decisive.
Resale value and depreciation: the Sienna’s evidence
Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 resale award
Kelley Blue Book named the Toyota Sienna the minivan category winner in its 2026 Best Resale Value Awards. KBB says the award’s residual values are projections for average-condition vehicles with 75,000 miles at the end of five years. Its model uses the Official Residual Value Guide and statistical analysis built from millions of transactions.
That award is a forward-looking resale signal, not a guaranteed appraisal. An individual vehicle can sell for more or less depending on condition, mileage, service records, equipment, local demand, incentives paid when new and the broader used-car market. A well-documented, clean vehicle may outperform an average-condition example, while accident history, neglected maintenance or unusually high mileage can reduce its value.
How the depreciation estimates line up
The KBB five-year estimates point in the same direction as the award: projected depreciation is $18,570 for the Sienna and $24,000 for the Pacifica in the displayed 2025-model comparison. The $5,430 difference is larger than the Pacifica’s $1,432 out-of-pocket advantage, which is why the Sienna’s total is lower.

Depreciation is an economic cost even when no check is written each month. It represents the value consumed while you own the vehicle and becomes especially important if you trade in or sell after a few years. If you finance a vehicle, a faster-than-expected drop in value can also leave you owing more than the vehicle is worth, particularly with a small down payment or long loan term.
KBB’s published explanation of resale economics notes that depreciation is often the largest expense drivers incur during a vehicle’s first five years. The size of the loss depends on the price paid as well as the eventual sale price. A large discount at purchase can improve your personal result; paying an unusually high market-adjusted price can worsen it even if the model’s average residual forecast is strong.
Why trim and powertrain can reverse the comparison
“Pacifica” and “Sienna” each describe a range of configurations rather than one fixed cost profile. A gas model, all-wheel-drive model, higher trim or plug-in-hybrid configuration can have a different transaction price, fuel use, insurance rating, tax treatment, maintenance pattern and resale demand.
Edmunds illustrates this issue with separate True Cost to Own results for Pacifica configurations. Its page shows a five-year estimate of $58,413 and $24,245 in depreciation for a 2025 Pacifica Select gas model. The same tool presents distinct totals for AWD, higher trims and plug-in-hybrid versions; those figures should not be filled in or combined with the KBB numbers.
| Published estimate | Configuration and publisher | Five-year total | Five-year depreciation |
|---|---|---|---|
| KBB | 2025 Toyota Sienna; KBB estimate checked October 2026 | $60,849 | $18,570 |
| KBB | 2025 Chrysler Pacifica; KBB estimate checked October 2026 | $64,847 | $24,000 |
| Edmunds | 2025 Chrysler Pacifica Select gas | $58,413 | $24,245 |
The Edmunds row is not a correction to KBB’s Pacifica figure. It uses a different publisher, configuration and methodology. A meaningful comparison requires matching the exact trim, powertrain and drivetrain before comparing totals. Even two gas Pacificas can have different results if one is a base trim and the other has expensive options.
Plug-in-hybrid questions require their own model
A plug-in-hybrid Pacifica cannot be judged solely by the gas-model estimate. Electricity cost, charging access, electric-driving share, battery-related warranty terms and possible tax treatment can alter both operating cost and resale assumptions. Use the specific plug-in-hybrid configuration in the calculator rather than applying the Select gas result to it.
KBB and Edmunds are measuring with different assumptions
Cost-to-own tools are models, not universal accounting systems. Their outputs can disagree without either being mathematically wrong because each uses its own prices, depreciation curves and assumptions.

Edmunds True Cost to Own assumptions
Edmunds says its five-year estimate assumes 15,000 miles driven per year, traditional financing, above-average credit, 10% down and a 60-month loan. It groups spending into seven categories: depreciation, insurance, financing, taxes and fees, fuel, maintenance and repairs. Edmunds describes the tool as comparative rather than predictive and warns that actual costs vary with personal circumstances.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe 15,000-mile assumption affects more than fuel. Mileage influences tire and service needs, repair exposure and the vehicle’s eventual resale condition. Someone driving 25,000 miles annually should not expect the same residual value as the modeled 75,000-mile, five-year award condition; someone driving 7,000 miles may have a different outcome, provided the vehicle is maintained and remains in good condition.
How to use the publishers without mixing them
- Use KBB figures together when evaluating the KBB Sienna-versus-Pacifica comparison.
- Use Edmunds figures together when comparing configurations inside the Edmunds tool.
- Do not add an Edmunds depreciation number to KBB out-of-pocket categories or present the resulting sum as one publisher’s estimate.
- Record the model year, trim, powertrain, drivetrain, date viewed and assumptions beside every number.
- Refresh time-sensitive estimates when prices, incentives, fuel costs or market conditions change.
How to calculate your own likely ownership cost
The published totals are useful for a first screen. Before choosing a vehicle, replace generalized assumptions with your actual deal and driving pattern.
- Lock the configurations. Write down the exact model year, trim, engine or powertrain and drivetrain for both vehicles. Do not compare a base gas model with a higher-trim or plug-in-hybrid vehicle and call the result a model-level comparison.
- Use real transaction prices. Start with the dealer’s selling price, destination charges, taxes, registration and any discount or incentive you actually qualify for. The amount paid affects the depreciation you will experience.
- Set your ownership period. A five-year estimate is not interchangeable with a three-year lease, a seven-year ownership plan or an immediate trade. Match the time horizon to your plan.
- Enter annual mileage. Edmunds’ standard assumption is 15,000 miles per year. If you drive substantially more or less, adjust fuel, maintenance, repair risk and expected resale mileage accordingly.
- Request insurance quotes. Obtain quotes for the exact vehicle identification or trim in your ZIP code, using the same liability limits and deductibles. A national estimate cannot capture your driver profile.
- Price the loan you will actually use. Record down payment, amount financed, term and annual percentage rate. Edmunds’ comparison assumption is 10% down, 60 months and above-average credit; your loan may differ materially.
- Estimate fuel with your local prices. Use your expected fuel type, annual miles and a realistic local price rather than copying a national average. Keep the calculation consistent between vehicles.
- Check resale before signing. Compare current trade-in and private-party indications for the exact equipment, then treat any five-year forecast as a range indicator rather than a promise.
- Document condition assumptions. Note whether your plan includes covered parking, towing, pets, child-seat use or severe weather. Those factors can affect wear, cleaning and eventual presentation even when they are not separate calculator categories.
A simple personal model is: total cash and financing-related spending over the ownership period plus depreciation, minus any sale or trade-in proceeds. Keep taxes, registration, insurance, fuel, maintenance and repairs in separate rows so you can see which assumption drives the result. If you expect to sell early, use an early-year resale estimate rather than dividing a five-year depreciation figure evenly across every year.
Decision framework for different buyers
If minimizing modeled five-year cost is the priority
The KBB comparison favors the Sienna because its projected depreciation advantage is larger than the Pacifica’s estimated out-of-pocket advantage. This is the strongest evidence-based case for choosing the Sienna when both vehicles are similarly equipped and purchased on comparable terms.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If your purchase prices are very different
Recalculate rather than assuming the model with the better average residual forecast will win for you. A negotiated discount, dealer markup or incentive changes the amount exposed to depreciation. Use the actual selling prices in both scenarios, including fees that are unavoidable and discounts you can document.
If your mileage or financing differs from standard assumptions
Adjust the model before deciding. A high-mileage driver will not have the same fuel, maintenance or resale profile as the 15,000-mile Edmunds assumption, and a loan with a different rate or term changes financing cost. A low-mileage buyer may place more weight on time-based maintenance, insurance and depreciation than on fuel.

If you are considering a Pacifica configuration other than the KBB comparison
Look up that exact configuration. Edmunds’ separate results for gas, AWD, higher trims and plug-in-hybrid versions show why a Pacifica total cannot be generalized across the lineup. The same caution applies when comparing Sienna trims or drivetrain choices.
If you plan to trade rather than sell privately
Use trade-in estimates for both vehicles and compare them on the same date. Dealer trade values can differ from private-party prices because the dealer must recondition and resell the vehicle. A strong model-level residual forecast does not guarantee that every dealer will offer the same percentage of market value.
Common comparison mistakes
- Using a search snippet instead of the opened estimate. A search-result snippet showed a conflicting Sienna total; the current KBB page figure used here is $60,849.
- Dropping the model year. A 2025 estimate should not be quoted as if it applies to every Sienna or Pacifica year.
- Calling a forecast a guarantee. The resale award and depreciation figures are projections for defined conditions, not a promised sale price.
- Comparing unmatched vehicles. Trim, drivetrain and powertrain must be aligned before interpreting a dollar difference.
- Ignoring the purchase price. Depreciation is measured from what you pay to what the vehicle is worth later; incentives and markups matter.
- Assuming out-of-pocket totals are universal. Insurance, fuel, taxes, financing and state fees are highly personal or location-specific.
- Blending publishers’ categories. Keep KBB and Edmunds outputs separate because their assumptions and calculations are not identical.
- Ignoring condition and mileage at sale. The award projection uses an average-condition vehicle with 75,000 miles after five years; your vehicle may not match either condition.
- Counting depreciation twice. If you calculate depreciation as purchase price minus sale proceeds, do not add a separate calculator depreciation charge for the same period.
What to verify before buying
- Exact model year, trim, drivetrain and powertrain for each quote.
- Out-the-door purchase price, including dealer fees, taxes and registration.
- Your insurer’s premium for each specific vehicle.
- Loan amount, interest rate, term and down payment.
- Expected annual mileage and local fuel prices.
- Maintenance schedule, warranty coverage and likely repair exposure.
- Current trade-in and private-sale indications for the equipment you intend to buy.
- Date and publisher of every cost or residual estimate you record.
- Whether incentives, tax credits or special financing apply to one configuration but not the other.
- Whether your intended use includes towing, frequent short trips or severe-weather driving that could alter maintenance needs.
Both KBB valuation tools and Edmunds cost-comparison tools can help you update the figures for your exact vehicle. Enter the same assumptions for both candidates and save a copy of the result, since online estimates can change as market data and prices are updated.
Frequently asked questions
Which costs less to own over five years, a Chrysler Pacifica or a Toyota Sienna?
On KBB’s current 2025-model estimates, the Toyota Sienna costs $60,849 over five years versus $64,847 for the Chrysler Pacifica, making the Sienna lower by $3,998. The result depends on KBB’s specific configurations and assumptions.
Why is the Pacifica’s out-of-pocket estimate lower but its total cost higher?
KBB estimates $40,847 in Pacifica out-of-pocket costs versus $42,279 for the Sienna, a $1,432 Pacifica advantage. However, projected Pacifica depreciation is $24,000 compared with $18,570 for the Sienna. The $5,430 depreciation gap outweighs the cash-cost difference.
Which minivan has better projected resale value?
Kelley Blue Book named the Toyota Sienna the minivan winner of its 2026 Best Resale Value Awards. The award uses projected residual values for average-condition vehicles with 75,000 miles after five years, so it is a signal rather than a guarantee for an individual vehicle.
Does the KBB comparison apply to every Pacifica trim?
No. The displayed Pacifica total is a specific 2025-model estimate. Edmunds lists separate results for Pacifica Select gas, AWD, higher trims and plug-in-hybrid configurations. Match the exact trim and powertrain before relying on a dollar comparison.

What mileage does the Edmunds estimate assume?
Edmunds’ True Cost to Own methodology assumes 15,000 miles per year, traditional financing, above-average credit, 10% down and a 60-month loan. Driving more or less can change fuel, maintenance, repair and resale results.
Should I use KBB or Edmunds?
Use either as a consistent comparison tool, but do not combine their categories into one total. KBB and Edmunds use different methodologies. Run both vehicles through the same publisher, then personalize the result with your actual price, mileage, financing, insurance and location.
Can a lower purchase price make the Pacifica the better financial choice?
Yes. A substantial discount can reduce your personal depreciation enough to change the outcome. Compare each vehicle’s actual out-the-door price and expected sale or trade value instead of relying only on an average model forecast.

On the current KBB 2025-model estimates, the Toyota Sienna is the stronger choice for modeled five-year economics and projected resale retention. The Pacifica’s estimated cash outlay is lower in that comparison, but its higher projected depreciation produces the higher total. KBB’s 2026 resale award reinforces the Sienna’s projected residual strength. Make the final decision only after matching configurations and replacing generalized assumptions with your actual price, mileage, financing, insurance and location.
