The Honda Odyssey is the stronger resale-value bet than the Chrysler Pacifica in the currently published five-year forecasts. Kelley Blue Book’s 2025 and 2026 trim examples both project less depreciation and a higher five-year residual value for the Odyssey EX-L than for the Pacifica Select. An independent iSeeCars comparison also reports substantially lower five-year depreciation for the Odyssey at the model level.

These are forecasts, not guaranteed checks at a future dealership or private sale. Your minivan’s actual value will depend on its exact trim and equipment, purchase price, mileage, condition, location, selling method and the market when you sell.

What the five-year numbers say

The clearest answer comes from comparing the published estimates for consecutive model years. The figures below are Kelley Blue Book projections for a vehicle after five years of ownership or leasing. They compare a Chrysler Pacifica Select with a Honda Odyssey EX-L, so they are useful examples rather than a perfectly matched trim test.

Kelley Blue Book five-year projections
Model year and example trim Projected five-year depreciation Projected value after five years Publisher
2026 Chrysler Pacifica Select $28,473 $17,967 residual value Kelley Blue Book estimate
2026 Honda Odyssey EX-L $20,620 $23,625 residual value Kelley Blue Book estimate
2025 Chrysler Pacifica Select $25,611 $18,834 residual value Kelley Blue Book estimate
2025 Honda Odyssey EX-L $23,567 $20,103 residual value Kelley Blue Book estimate

How large is the projected gap?

For the 2026 examples, the Odyssey EX-L has a projected depreciation bill that is $7,853 lower than the Pacifica Select’s ($28,473 versus $20,620). Its projected residual value is $5,658 higher ($23,625 versus $17,967). Those are substantial differences in the specific KBB examples, but they should not be treated as a universal price difference between every Pacifica and every Odyssey because the trims are not identical.

The 2025 estimates point in the same direction with a narrower spread. The Odyssey EX-L’s projected depreciation is $2,044 lower than the Pacifica Select’s ($23,567 versus $25,611), while its projected residual is $1,269 higher ($20,103 versus $18,834). Seeing the same direction in two adjacent model years makes the conclusion more durable than relying on one forecast alone.

Independent model-level comparison

iSeeCars reaches the same directional conclusion using a model-level comparison rather than the KBB trim examples. Its current comparison reports five-year depreciation of 54.7% for the Chrysler Pacifica and 43.4% for the Honda Odyssey, an 11.3-percentage-point advantage in retained value for the Odyssey. The figures are presented for the models as a whole, not for a particular year, engine, trim or option package, and the page does not identify a publication year for those percentages. See the iSeeCars Chrysler Pacifica versus Honda Odyssey comparison for its current calculation.

Because iSeeCars and KBB use different approaches, their numbers should not be combined into one exact dollar prediction. KBB supplies year- and trim-specific residual estimates; iSeeCars supplies a broader model-level depreciation rate. Their agreement is most useful for answering the directional question: the Odyssey is projected to lose less value over five years.

Depreciation, residual value and retained percentage are different measurements

Dollar depreciation

Dollar depreciation is the amount of value a forecast says the vehicle will lose over the stated period. A $28,473 depreciation estimate for the 2026 Pacifica Select is not a future invoice and does not tell you exactly what a dealer or private buyer will offer. It is the model’s estimated loss under KBB’s assumptions.

Residual value

A residual value is the estimated value remaining at the end of the period. In KBB’s examples, the 2026 Odyssey EX-L has a $23,625 residual and the 2026 Pacifica Select has a $17,967 residual. Residual values are especially relevant to leases, but an owner selling a financed or fully owned vehicle can also use them as a planning benchmark.

Percentage retained

A retained-value percentage expresses the ending value relative to the vehicle’s original value. It helps compare vehicles with different prices, while dollar depreciation tells you how many dollars may be at stake. A more expensive vehicle can retain a higher percentage yet lose more dollars than a cheaper one. Conversely, a lower purchase price or a large discount can reduce your personal dollar loss even when a published model-level percentage is unchanged.

What KBB’s forecast assumes

Kelley Blue Book says its residual values are projections generated by statistical models developed from millions of transactions. Its 2026 award announcement defines the benchmark as “projected future auction values for vehicles in average condition with 75,000 miles at the end of a five-year lease or ownership period.” That mileage and condition assumption is critical: a minivan with 110,000 miles, accident history or neglected maintenance will not fit the same benchmark.

KBB also identifies supply and demand, overall market conditions, vehicle availability and consumer interest as factors that can move resale values. A shortage of used minivans can lift transaction prices, while heavy incentives on new vehicles can put pressure on comparable used vehicles. The forecast is therefore a starting point, not a promise tied to your vehicle identification number.

For broader context, KBB says 2026 model-year vehicles retain about 45% of their value on average after five years. That is a market-wide reference point, not a prediction for either minivan. KBB named the Toyota Sienna the minivan category winner in its 2026 Best Resale Value Awards; the Pacifica-versus-Odyssey comparison should not be read as saying either model leads the entire segment. The award announcement and methodology are available from Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 Best Resale Value Awards.

“Toyota and Lexus continue to reign supreme with top average residual values, meaning their vehicles are projected to retain more of their original MSRP over the first five years of ownership in comparison to other mainstream and luxury brand averages,” said Rheia Szymczyk, senior manager, valuation and analysis operations for Kelley Blue Book. The statement is brand-level context, not a Pacifica-specific or Odyssey-specific forecast.

Why your result can differ from the published estimate

Trim, options and powertrain

The KBB examples use a Pacifica Select and an Odyssey EX-L, which have different standard equipment, option structures and original prices. A highly equipped vehicle can have a different used-buyer audience from a base trim. Factory options do not necessarily return their full cost at resale, and a powertrain or feature available on one trim may not be available on the other. When you compare listings or appraisal offers, record the exact trim, drivetrain, seating configuration, packages and major options rather than using only the model name.

Mileage and use

The 75,000-mile KBB assumption is an average-condition benchmark. Lower-mileage vehicles may command more, while unusually high mileage generally narrows the buyer pool. A family minivan can also show wear in the second-row seats, sliding-door hardware, cargo area and interior plastics even when its odometer is near average. Document maintenance and repair work; a complete service history can make an individual vehicle easier to sell, although no source here establishes a fixed dollar premium for it.

Condition and accident history

“Average condition” is not the same as flawless condition. Cosmetic damage, warning lights, tire wear, smoke or pet odors, flood exposure and an accident record can reduce an appraisal. Conversely, a clean title, consistent maintenance and professional detailing can help a vehicle compete with similar listings. Condition adjustments are vehicle-specific, so do not subtract a standard percentage from the KBB forecast without an actual appraisal.

Location and timing

Used-vehicle demand varies by region. Climate, local family-vehicle preferences, inventory levels and transportation costs can affect the price a buyer will pay. Timing matters as well: a forecast viewed in October 2026 can change before the vehicle is sold. New-vehicle incentives, interest rates, fuel prices and a sudden change in used inventory can all alter market pricing.

Trade-in versus private-party sale

A dealer trade-in is convenient but is not the same transaction as a private-party sale. A dealer must account for reconditioning, inventory risk and resale overhead; a private buyer may pay more but requires advertising, test drives, payment arrangements and title work. A lease-end purchase, dealer buyout and auction result are different channels again. Compare like with like when evaluating an offer: a trade-in quote should be measured against other trade-in quotes, not against a private-party listing price.

How to make an apples-to-apples comparison

  1. Choose the same model year. Compare a 2025 Pacifica with a 2025 Odyssey, or a 2026 with a 2026. Mixing years can make normal age differences look like a model advantage.
  2. Match equipment as closely as possible. Write down trim, drivetrain, seating, packages and major options. If no equivalent trim exists, label the comparison as an example rather than an equal-trim test.
  3. Separate the three figures. Record purchase price, projected dollar depreciation and projected residual value in different columns. Do not treat a residual dollar figure as a percentage or a percentage as a guaranteed sale price.
  4. Normalize mileage and condition. Use the same expected annual mileage and the same condition description for both vehicles. KBB’s published benchmark uses average condition and 75,000 miles after five years.
  5. Specify the sale route. Decide whether you are estimating a trade-in, private-party sale, lease residual or auction value. Each route can produce a different result.
  6. Check local values shortly before acting. Use a current valuation or quote tool, enter your location and vehicle details, and save the date of the result. Forecasts and local inventory can change, so an old screenshot should not determine a current purchase or sale decision.

The comparison becomes meaningful when every assumption is visible. If one vehicle is discounted heavily when new and the other is not, calculate your personal loss from the amount you actually paid as well as the model’s published retained-value estimate.

Three practical buyer situations

You are choosing between new 2026 examples

If your alternatives resemble the KBB examples, the Odyssey EX-L has the stronger projected five-year outcome: $20,620 of depreciation and a $23,625 residual, versus $28,473 and $17,967 for the Pacifica Select. The dollar advantage is meaningful for a buyer who expects to sell or trade near year five. Still, confirm the real transaction prices and equipment on the two vehicles before treating the forecast gap as your personal savings.

You are shopping lightly used 2025 models

The 2025 KBB examples still favor the Odyssey, but the projected difference is smaller. That makes current asking prices especially important. A Pacifica purchased at a large discount may produce a competitive personal result even if its model-level forecast is weaker, while an overpriced Odyssey can erase part of its resale advantage.

You already own one and plan to sell soon

Do not apply the five-year forecast as a direct appraisal. Gather the vehicle identification number, exact trim, odometer reading, title and accident history, maintenance records and photographs. Obtain current quotes for the sale channel you will actually use, then compare several offers made close together in time. The historical forecast can explain broad depreciation behavior, but the vehicle’s present condition and local market determine the offer you can accept today.

Common mistakes that distort the comparison

  • Calling the KBB trims equal. Select and EX-L are different trim names. Present the figures as specific examples and avoid claiming they are a controlled, same-equipment test.
  • Turning a forecast into a guarantee. KBB and iSeeCars publish estimates based on models or historical comparisons. Neither can guarantee an individual transaction price years in advance.
  • Mixing model-level and trim-level data. iSeeCars’ 54.7% and 43.4% figures describe the models broadly; KBB’s dollar figures identify model year and trim. They answer related questions but are not interchangeable cells in one calculation.
  • Ignoring the amount actually paid. Resale percentages do not include your financing costs, taxes, registration, maintenance or negotiating outcome. Use your real purchase price for a personal break-even calculation.
  • Comparing different sale channels. A private-party advertisement, a dealer trade-in and a lease residual are not equivalent valuations.
  • Using an outdated forecast. Resale projections are volatile. Recheck current KBB and local market values near the date of purchase, lease decision or sale.
  • Assuming segment leadership. The Odyssey’s advantage over the Pacifica does not make it the overall resale champion among minivans; KBB’s 2026 category award went to the Toyota Sienna.

Bottom-line buying guidance

Choose the Honda Odyssey if resale value is a major part of your five-year ownership calculation and the comparable purchase prices, trims and conditions are close. Both consecutive KBB model-year examples and the independent iSeeCars model comparison point toward lower Odyssey depreciation.

Choose the Chrysler Pacifica when its actual transaction price, configuration or condition gives you a better total-cost result despite the weaker published forecast. A substantial discount at purchase, a shorter ownership period, unusually low mileage or a strong local market can change the economics for one specific vehicle. The defensible general answer remains that the Odyssey is projected to hold its value better, while the defensible personal answer requires a current, vehicle-specific quote.
