A Chromium AI extension is a browser extension that adds AI-powered features to a Chromium-based browser. It is a category of software, not one official product or a single API: an extension may use AI built into the browser, send requests to a cloud service, or run other AI models on the device. Chrome’s built-in AI APIs are one option—not the definition of the category.

What “Chromium AI extension” means

Chromium provides an extension system that lets developers combine web technologies with browser extension APIs. An AI extension applies that system to tasks such as summarizing or translating content, generating text, assisting with coding, making recommendations, or customizing a browser experience. Chrome’s developer documentation describes extensions as able to work with web content and browser experiences (Chrome’s extensions and AI guidance).

“Chromium” refers to the open-source browser project; Chrome is one browser built on Chromium. The Chromium Extensions Manifesto says, “Extensions should work the same in Chromium as in Google Chrome.” That is a design goal for the extension system, not a promise that every Chrome-specific AI feature works in every Chromium-based browser (Chromium Extensions Manifesto).

How an AI extension can provide its features

The phrase does not tell you where the AI model runs. Extensions can use different implementation approaches, and a product may combine them. Its own documentation and privacy disclosures are needed to understand what happens to the content you submit.

  • Healthy metabolism – For those who measure fasting blood levels to try and stay in that “sweet spot”, consider adding the trace mineral chromium to your daily regimen.
  • Weight management - Chromium can help maintain a healthy weight. In one clinical study, chromium helped fight body fat to promote a healthy weight, starting at 12 weeks.
  • Optimized chromium supplement – This chromium supplement is augmented with Indian gooseberry (amla fruit) extract as well as the adaptogen shilajit for optimized benefits.
  • Ingredients matter – We use the finest raw ingredients chosen for quality and purity. The majority of our products are non-GMO, gluten-free and manufactured in the USA with globally sourced ingredients, and a Certificate of Analysis is available for each.
  • Live your healthiest life – We believe the answers to a healthier life are in reach, and that scientific research is the key to getting there. That’s why so many of our formulas feature specific ingredients and amounts based on scientific studies.

Browser-managed AI

An extension can call AI APIs provided by the browser. Chrome describes its built-in AI as browser-managed foundation and expert models; its glossary identifies Gemini Nano and expert models as part of that offering (Get started with built-in AI; What is artificial intelligence?).

Cloud-hosted AI

An extension can send a request to a hosted model or service and use the returned result. This approach depends on the extension’s service and data practices; the label “AI extension” alone does not establish whether a page, prompt, or other information leaves your device. Chrome’s developer guidance discusses both cloud-hosted and client-side approaches (Extensions and AI).

Other client-side AI

An extension may also use locally run models or client-side libraries rather than a browser-provided AI API. Chrome’s guidance covers web technologies and libraries for AI, and a Chrome Web Store example of a developer-focused built-in AI API polyfill lists Transformers.js as an option (Extensions and AI; Built-in AI).

What it can look like in a browser

Depending on its design, an extension might add a side panel, a new-tab page, an action button, or a context-menu command. It may work on selected web content or customize part of the browser experience. Those capabilities and the permissions required to provide them vary by extension; the extension’s manifest, permissions, and disclosures are the relevant details to inspect (Chrome Extensions reference).

Not every AI feature visible in Chrome is an extension. Google also offers built-in browser features, including Gemini in Chrome and AI Mode, that do not require installing an extension (AI in Chrome).

What Chrome’s built-in AI support does—and does not—tell you

Chrome supports using some built-in AI APIs in extensions, but support is specific to each API and can depend on its development stage, Chrome version, operating system, and device requirements. Google’s requirements documentation describes model downloads and platform or hardware conditions, which differ by API (Get started with built-in AI).

For example, Google’s API availability page listed Translator, Language Detector, and Summarizer for Chrome 138 on web and extensions; Writer was in a developer trial; and Prompt API was available in Chrome 138 stable for Chrome extensions. This is a dated documentation snapshot, not a guarantee of present availability or support in other Chromium browsers. Check the live API status and requirements for the browser and device you intend to use (Built-in AI APIs).

Chrome’s API documentation should not be treated as proof that a Chrome-specific built-in AI API is available in another Chromium-based browser. Confirm compatibility with that browser’s current documentation. Chrome’s extension reference covers its APIs, manifest keys, and permissions (Chrome Extensions).

How to evaluate a specific extension

Before installing or relying on an AI extension, check the details that its category name cannot answer:

  • Model location: Does it use browser-managed AI, a cloud service, another on-device model, or a combination?
  • Compatibility: Which browsers, versions, operating systems, and hardware does the developer support?
  • Task and controls: What can it do, and can you review or adjust its output?
  • Permissions and data handling: What browser access does it request, and what does its privacy disclosure say about content and prompts?
  • API maturity: If it depends on a built-in API, is that API stable, experimental, or in a trial for your browser version?

In managed Chrome environments, administrators may also control use of built-in AI APIs through policy (Chrome Enterprise policy help).
