There is no safe one-size-fits-all winner. Check the MacBook’s exact model identifier first. Install ChromeOS Flex when that specific model is currently certified and its ChromeOS-style workflow suits you. Choose Linux when you want a more flexible desktop and are willing to test a live USB, verify the hardware, and accept more variation between models and drivers.
For an older Intel MacBook, Ubuntu provides a documented example: its installer can boot on older Apple hardware, and the “Try Ubuntu” session lets you test the computer before changing the disk. Whichever route you choose, make a complete backup first. A permanent ChromeOS Flex installation erases the existing operating system, applications, settings, and files.
Start with the MacBook’s exact identity
“MacBook” is not a sufficient compatibility description. Apple sold many generations with different Intel processors, graphics, wireless chips, cameras, keyboards, trackpads, storage controllers, and firmware. Two machines with similar names can behave very differently under a replacement operating system.
Find the model identifier in macOS
- Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac.
- Note the model name, year, processor, memory, and storage.
- Open System Information (also called System Report) and record the Model Identifier, such as
MacBookAir6,1,MacBookAir7,2,MacBookPro9,2, orMacBookPro11,2. - Record whether the Mac is Intel-based. The requirements discussed here do not establish support for Apple-silicon MacBooks.
Use that identifier, rather than only a marketing name or purchase year, when checking Google’s ChromeOS Flex certified-model list and when searching Ubuntu or a distribution’s hardware discussions. Certification and driver behavior can change, so check the live documentation immediately before installing.
#1 Best Overall
- 10 Pack USB Sticks: 10 pieces of USB flash drives are fit for a variety of scenarios. Whether the flash drives USB are used as school supplies for high school students to backup data storaged in USB jump drives or music USB flash drive for car, zip drive can meet the basic storage needs. USB drive pack of 10 has a higher cost performance. USB flash drive pack of 10 is suitable for ordinary users with appropriate needs, but also for special groups such as companies, schools or other organizations that need a large number of U disks. In short, thumb drives can meet the needs of different customers.
- Swivel Design: With the 360° swivel design, all the ports of the thumb drives 10 pack can be hidden inside the metal casing. When needed, simply swivel the casing gently and the ports will automatically expose, making it convenient for you to insert and remove. This design is not only fashionable and beautiful but also more user-friendly, whether you'd like your flash drive for photos, flash drive for video storage, or memory sticks for computers. In addition, the swivel design can effectively protect the interface from damage and pollution, increasing the service life of the flash USB drive.
- Portability: The small hole on the thumbdrive USB is designed for lanyards, which is convenient to carry. Besides, the USB flash drive keychain can also be tied through the small hole to prevent loss. This design is very thoughtful and reflects the humanized design concept of the memorias USB flash drive.
- Plug and Play: You can use the computer storage flash drive immediately for data storage or backup without any additional installation after inserting it into the computer. This plug and play feature makes the laptop storage drive a very convenient external ssd. You can copy the required data files to the external drive at any time without worrying about computer system compatibility issues. In addition, the design of the external flash drive enables it to be quickly recognized by the system after being inserted into the computer. (NOTE: Please check if your device has a USB-A port before purchasing. If not, a USB-C hub is needed.)
- FAT32 format: The default system format for 8GB flash drive is FAT32. FAT32 USB flash drive is widely applicable, such as in televisions, DVD players, vehicles, printers, embroidery machines, etc. Be patient if you have problems with system recognition. It may take some time for initial recognition, but it will happen.
ChromeOS Flex and Linux compared
| Decision point | ChromeOS Flex | Linux (Ubuntu example) |
|---|---|---|
| How compatibility is established | Google publishes a model-by-model certified list with feature notes and a certification end year. Google guarantees functionality only on certified models. | Ubuntu recommends certified hardware where available and provides a live session for testing. Booting the installer does not prove that every component will work after installation. |
| Documented minimum resources | Intel or AMD x86-64 processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, at least 16 GB of internal storage, and USB boot capability. Intel or AMD processors and graphics from 2012 and earlier are not recommended or supported by Google’s requirements. | The Ubuntu Desktop tutorial used for this comparison calls for at least 25 GB of storage and recommends an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive. Check the requirements for the exact Ubuntu release you plan to use. |
| Try before installing | Google supports temporarily running Flex from USB before committing the internal drive. | Select Try Ubuntu after booting the installer to run a live desktop without installing it. |
| Effect of a permanent install | The installation erases the current operating system, applications, settings, and data on the target device. | Installation changes partitions and boot configuration. Back up first and do not assume dual boot is straightforward on a particular MacBook. |
| Support model | Read the individual model’s certification status, end year, and notes. Non-certified devices have no Google guarantee for performance, functionality, or stability across updates. | Support depends on the Ubuntu release, the Mac’s hardware, and available drivers. The evidence here does not establish a universal support status for an unspecified MacBook. |
| Best fit | A browser-centered computer with a simple, appliance-like interface, when the exact Mac is certified and its documented limitations are acceptable. | A general-purpose desktop requiring more software choices, local tools, customization, or hardware experimentation, provided the live test is successful. |
What Google’s ChromeOS Flex certification actually tells you
Google’s certified-model list, last updated September 2, 2026, is the most important source for a Flex decision. It lists individual Apple models, their certification status, and an end-of-support year. A certified entry is stronger evidence than a forum report that “Flex runs” on a similar Mac, but it is not a promise that every feature works perfectly.
Named MacBook examples
The list identifies MacBook Air 6,1 as certified through 2026 and MacBook Air 7,2 as certified through 2027. Both entries carry a note that the webcam does not work. That limitation matters if you rely on video calls, identity checks, or camera-based scanning.
MacBook Pro 9,2 and MacBook Pro 11,2 are shown as decertified, with their listed certification ending in 2025. “Decertified” does not mean the installer necessarily refuses to boot or that the machine instantly stops functioning. It means Google’s ongoing testing and support commitment has ended; future updates are not guaranteed to preserve the same behavior. Recheck the current list because status dates can change.
What is covered and what is not
Google describes a baseline set of functions for certified models, including display, installation, network connectivity, touchpad, keyboard, sleep and resume, USB, and the webcam when present. Other features may be tested without being guaranteed, or may not be tested or supported at all. Treat “certified” as a compatibility baseline, not as a claim that every port, sensor, shortcut, camera mode, graphics feature, or power-management behavior is perfect.
Google’s preparation guidance states that it guarantees ChromeOS Flex functionality only on certified models. On a non-certified Mac, you may get a usable system, but Google does not promise performance, functionality, or stability through updates. That uncertainty should be part of the decision, not something discovered after erasing macOS.
When ChromeOS Flex is the better choice
You want a focused, browser-first computer
Flex is attractive when most of your work happens in web applications, cloud storage, online documents, and browser-based communication. Its interface and update model are designed around a ChromeOS-style workflow rather than a traditional Linux desktop with many independent choices.
Your exact model is currently certified
Certification gives you the clearest support boundary available for Flex. Check the model entry, the certification end year, and every feature note. A certified Air with a non-working webcam may still be a good fit for writing and browsing, but not for a user whose primary requirement is video conferencing.

You prefer fewer desktop decisions
Linux can be tailored extensively, but that flexibility also means choosing a desktop environment, applications, update cadence, and sometimes workarounds for Apple-specific hardware. Flex is the more appliance-like option when the supported feature set already meets your needs.
When Flex is a poor fit
- The exact MacBook is not on the certified list and you need predictable updates.
- You depend on the built-in webcam and the model note says it does not work.
- You need macOS-only applications or workflows.
- The machine has less than 4 GB of RAM, less than 16 GB of internal storage, cannot boot from USB, or uses Intel or AMD processor/graphics hardware from 2012 or earlier that Google marks as not recommended or supported.
- You have not backed up the disk and are not prepared for a complete erase.
When Linux is the better choice
You need a general-purpose desktop
Linux is the more flexible path when you want locally installed applications, development tools, multiple desktop choices, configurable window management, or a system that can be adapted after installation. The trade-off is that “Linux support” is not one universal promise: a distribution release and its drivers determine what works on your particular Mac.
You are willing to test before committing
Ubuntu’s documented live-session workflow is valuable on aging Apple hardware. You can boot the installer, select Try Ubuntu, and check the components that matter before touching the internal disk. This is especially useful when the Mac is absent from a certification list or when you need features that Flex’s model notes limit.
You can accept per-component troubleshooting
A Linux installation may boot successfully while still needing investigation of Wi-Fi, audio, the camera, suspend/resume, graphics acceleration, keyboard shortcuts, or trackpad behavior. A live test does not guarantee that every issue is solved, but it exposes serious incompatibilities while macOS remains intact.
When Linux is a poor fit
- You need a guaranteed, model-specific support statement rather than a test-and-verify process.
- You expect every Apple-specific feature to work without configuration.
- You cannot spare at least the documented storage or do not have an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive.
- You need macOS applications, Apple services, or a vendor-supported macOS workflow.
- You are unwilling to troubleshoot partitioning and boot changes.
Requirements and preparation checklist
Hardware to gather
- The MacBook’s exact model identifier and a record of its current RAM and storage.
- A reliable USB flash drive of at least 8 GB. Creating either installer erases the USB drive, so copy anything important from it first.
- Another computer if the Mac cannot create the installer reliably.
- Stable power. Keep the Mac connected to its charger during testing and installation.
- Enough free storage for the chosen system: Google lists 16 GB of internal storage for Flex; the Ubuntu Desktop tutorial lists at least 25 GB.
Back up before you create media
Copy documents, photos, browser data, password-manager exports, and any files stored only on the Mac. Verify that the backup opens on another device. A permanent Flex installation explicitly removes the existing operating system, applications, settings, and data. Ubuntu installation also changes the disk layout, so a backup is essential even if you plan to preserve a partition.
Decide what must work
Write down your non-negotiable functions before testing: wireless networking, audio output and microphone, webcam, keyboard, trackpad, external display, sleep and wake, USB ports, brightness controls, battery reporting, and any specialist application. A system that boots but fails your most important function is not a successful installation.
How to evaluate and install ChromeOS Flex
1. Check the certified list
Search for the exact identifier, not just “MacBook Air” or “MacBook Pro.” Read the certification end year and every note. If the entry is decertified or absent, treat Flex as an experiment without Google’s model-level guarantee.

- FAT32 Format: The default file system for 8GB flash drives is FAT32, providing read/write compatibility with both Windows and macOS. This format is ideal for storing music, photos, videos, software installers and general document files. Pro Tip: Maximize performance by reformatting to your optimal file system.(FAT32: Universal compatibility (files under 4GB); exFAT: Cross-platform large file support; NTFS: Advanced Windows features (encryption/compression))
- LED Indicator: The end of the USB storage flash drive is designed with an indicator. The LED indicator lights up when you plug the zip drive usb into the devices, the light blinks while write/read activities are in process. In this case, do not remove the USB drive pack. Otherwise, data integrity and the service life of the USB drives are affected.
2. Confirm the baseline requirements
Verify an Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, at least 16 GB of internal storage, and the ability to boot from USB. Google’s requirements caution against Intel or AMD processors and graphics from 2012 and earlier. A machine that falls below these requirements is not a sensible Flex target.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Create the installer USB
Use Google’s current ChromeOS Flex preparation and installation procedure to write the installer to an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive. The process erases the USB, so double-check the selected removable drive before confirming.
4. Boot the Mac from USB and test temporarily
Insert the USB, restart the Mac, and use the Startup Manager key shown for Intel Macs—normally Option/Alt—to select the USB. Choose the temporary or trial path offered by the current Flex installer rather than starting a permanent installation immediately.
While running from USB, test Wi-Fi, audio, microphone, webcam, keyboard, trackpad, display brightness, external monitors, USB devices, sleep and resume, and the applications you expect to use. A webcam warning on a certified model is a documented limitation, not a fault that installation will fix.
5. Install only after the test passes
Keep the backup available and confirm that you are ready to lose the existing macOS installation. Start the permanent Flex installation only when the model’s support status and your live-test results meet your needs. The target disk is erased, including applications and personal data.

6. Recheck support after installation
Record the model’s certification end year. Certification ending means Google’s support and ongoing testing stop; it does not guarantee that future updates will continue to work. For an older Mac, plan for the possibility that a later update could expose a previously unseen hardware issue.
How to evaluate and install Ubuntu Linux
1. Download the official Ubuntu image for the release you intend to use
Use Ubuntu’s current Desktop installation instructions and verify the release requirements. The tutorial used here lists at least 25 GB of storage and recommends an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive. Do not assume those figures remain identical for every future release.

Ubuntu’s tutorial explains that this option previews Ubuntu without making changes to the computer. Use the live desktop to test the checklist you wrote earlier. Confirm that wireless networking connects reliably, sound and microphone work, the webcam is detected if required, the trackpad and keyboard are comfortable, the display behaves correctly, external devices are recognized, and sleep/resume is acceptable.
5. Investigate failures while macOS is still available
If a device does not work, record the exact symptom and decide whether it is a deal-breaker. A live session is the safest point to stop. Do not erase macOS hoping that an installation will automatically supply a missing driver.
6. Install with a deliberate disk plan
When the live test passes, follow Ubuntu’s installer prompts and read every storage screen. An installation can replace partitions and alter the boot setup. Do not promise yourself a simple dual-boot arrangement without model-specific verification and a tested recovery plan.

Common mistakes and how to recover
Installing before identifying the model
Symptom: You rely on a generic “old MacBook” recommendation. Fix: Return to About This Mac/System Information, capture the identifier, and check the current Flex entry. For Linux, boot the live USB and test rather than inferring compatibility from another generation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Confusing “boots” with “supported”
Symptom: The installer starts, so you assume all hardware and future updates are covered. Fix: For Flex, distinguish certified, decertified, and unlisted models. For Ubuntu, treat a successful boot as the beginning of hardware testing, not the end.
Best Value
- Ultra-compact and portable contoured styling
- Share your photos, videos, songs and other files between computers with ease
- Protect your private files with included SanDisk SecureAccess software (Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and Mac OS X v10.6+ (Software download required for Mac, see official SanDisk Secure Access website for more details.))
- Store more with capacities up to 8GB (1 gigabyte (GB) = 1 billion bytes. Some capacity not available for data storage.)
Erasing the wrong drive
Symptom: Files disappear from the USB or internal disk. Fix: Before creating media, verify the removable drive and back up its contents. Before a permanent install, verify the target disk and confirm that the backup is complete. If you have not confirmed both, stop.
Ignoring a documented webcam limitation
Symptom: Flex works except for the camera on a certified MacBook Air. Fix: Treat the note as a known model limitation and decide whether an external camera or a different operating system is acceptable. Do not expect reinstalling Flex to change a listed limitation.
Assuming decertification is an immediate failure
Symptom: You discard a Mac solely because its certification year has ended, or you install it expecting ongoing Google testing. Fix: Understand that decertification ends the support and testing commitment; it does not establish that the machine cannot boot. Weigh the uncertainty against your need for dependable updates.
Keeping no recovery path
Symptom: A failed experiment leaves you unable to return to your previous setup. Fix: Keep verified backups and recovery media before changing partitions. If the Mac is still usable, retain the information needed to reinstall your prior operating system or restore your files.
Decision guide by user and machine
Choose ChromeOS Flex when all of these are true
- Your exact MacBook appears as currently certified.
- The certification notes do not conflict with your required features, or you knowingly accept them.
- The Mac meets Google’s 4 GB RAM, 16 GB storage, x86-64, and USB-boot requirements.
- Your work is primarily browser-based.
- You have a verified backup and accept that permanent installation erases the disk.
Choose Linux when all of these are true
- You want a broader, configurable desktop rather than a browser-centered appliance.
- You can meet the chosen Ubuntu release’s storage requirement, including the documented 25 GB example.
- You can create an installer on an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive.
- The live session confirms the Wi-Fi, audio, camera, input, display, power, and USB behavior you need.
- You are comfortable with a less certain, model-by-model support process and careful partitioning.
Keep macOS for now when either path fails your must-have test
If the camera, wireless adapter, sleep behavior, specialist application, or recovery plan is unacceptable, do not erase the working system merely because an installer boots. Use the live USB as an evaluation tool and postpone the permanent change until the missing requirement has a documented solution.
Bottom line: which should you install?
For a currently certified MacBook with acceptable feature notes and a browser-first workload, ChromeOS Flex is the more predictable choice. Its advantage comes from Google’s model-specific certification, not from the word “ChromeOS” alone.
For an unlisted or decertified MacBook, or for anyone needing a flexible general-purpose desktop, Linux—using Ubuntu’s live session as the documented example—is the stronger candidate. Test first, especially Wi-Fi, camera, audio, input, sleep, and display, and install only after a verified backup and a clear disk plan. The exact model identifier and the results of that live test should decide the installation, not the MacBook label by itself.
