Short answer: ChromeOS Flex can turn some Intel MacBooks into ChromeOS-like computers, but it is not the same operating system experience as a Chromebook. Flex lacks Google’s security chip and ChromeOS verified boot, does not provide the full Google Play app catalog, cannot run Windows virtual machines through Parallels Desktop, and offers Linux development support only on some models. Google’s certified-model list updated September 2, 2026 names MacBook Air 6,1 and MacBook Air 7,2 as certified, but says the webcam does not work on either. Check the exact Mac model identifier and its current certification status before you install.
Google describes the relationship this way: “ChromeOS and ChromeOS Flex share underlying technology and management tools.” The shared foundation is useful, but the hardware differences determine which security, application and device features you actually get on a MacBook.
ChromeOS Flex and ChromeOS are related, not interchangeable
ChromeOS is designed for hardware that includes Google-specific components and firmware. ChromeOS Flex is an installable operating system for compatible third-party PCs and Macs. Both use Chrome’s browser-centered interface and can be administered with many of the same management tools, but Flex must work with whatever firmware, chips, camera, graphics and input devices the target computer already has.

That distinction matters most on a MacBook. A model can boot Flex and still lack a webcam, have unreliable function keys, or miss features that are standard on a Chromebook. Google’s certification list is the strongest compatibility signal, but certification covers a defined baseline rather than every ChromeOS feature.

- FAT32 pre-formatted for broad compatibility: These drives work with Windows (XP through 11), macOS, Linux, Chrome OS, Smart TVs, Car Stereos, and USB-enabled printers without requiring drivers or software installation. For files larger than 4GB, reformat to exFAT using the built-in format utility on your computer.
- 31 labels included – pre-printed and blank: Each pack contains 19 pre-printed color-coded labels and 12 blank white labels for organizing drives by project, department, person, or event category. Labels attach directly to each drive for quick identification during multi-user distributions.
| Area | ChromeOS on purpose-built hardware | ChromeOS Flex on a MacBook |
|---|---|---|
| Security hardware | Google security chip and ChromeOS verified boot are supported. | No Google security chip; ChromeOS verified boot is unavailable. UEFI Secure Boot may be possible, but Google says it does not provide the same guarantees. |
| User-data encryption | Automatic encryption with hardware-backed protection on supported devices. | User data is automatically encrypted; hardware-level key protection depends on a supported TPM in the Mac. |
| Android apps | Availability depends on the ChromeOS device and Google Play policy. | Do not expect the full Play catalog. Google documents deployment of some Android VPN apps. |
| Windows virtual machines | Supported options depend on the ChromeOS edition and hardware. | Windows virtual machines through Parallels Desktop are unsupported. |
| Linux development environment | Availability depends on the Chromebook model and software version. | Varies by Mac model; verify the exact identifier instead of assuming it works. |
| Hardware support | Designed and tested as a complete product. | Depends on the Mac’s components and whether that exact model is certified. |
For Google’s detailed feature comparison, see Google’s Differences between ChromeOS Flex and ChromeOS documentation.
Security: the largest architectural difference
No Google security chip or verified boot
ChromeOS hardware includes a Google security chip that participates in ChromeOS verified boot. Verified boot checks the operating system during startup and helps detect unauthorized changes before the system loads. A MacBook running Flex does not contain that Google chip, so it cannot perform ChromeOS verified boot.
Flex can optionally use UEFI Secure Boot when the Mac’s firmware and installation path support it. Google explicitly distinguishes that feature from ChromeOS verified boot: Secure Boot does not provide the same security guarantees. If your organization requires the Chromebook-style boot chain, a MacBook with Flex is not an equivalent substitute.
Encryption still protects files, but key protection varies
ChromeOS Flex automatically encrypts user data. The protection offered by the encryption keys depends on the target computer: hardware-level protection requires a supported Trusted Platform Module (TPM). Before relying on a particular MacBook for sensitive work, determine whether its TPM is supported by the Flex release and whether your organization’s policy accepts that arrangement.
This is a security-model decision, not merely a missing feature. A MacBook can be perfectly usable for web work while still offering a different boot and key-protection posture from a certified ChromeOS device.
Apps and development tools that do not carry over
Android applications are not the full Google Play experience
Do not install Flex expecting the complete Android app catalog available on some ChromeOS devices. Google’s comparison documentation describes Flex support for deployment of some Android VPN applications; it does not promise general Android app compatibility. If a workflow depends on a named Android app, confirm that the app is supported for your Flex deployment before replacing macOS.

Parallels Desktop Windows virtual machines are unsupported
ChromeOS Flex does not support Windows virtual machines using Parallels Desktop. That rules out a common Chromebook-style approach for running Windows software inside the operating system. You would need a separate, supported solution for any Windows-only application, and no current official documentation establishes one for a given MacBook.
Linux development support depends on the exact model
The Linux development environment is model-dependent on Flex. Treat it as a compatibility check, not a guaranteed feature. Verify the exact Mac identifier in Google’s current documentation and test the development container from a live USB session before committing to an installation if Linux tools are essential.
What certification means on a MacBook
Use the exact model identifier, not the marketing name
Apple sold several hardware revisions under similar MacBook names. Google certifies exact models listed in its database; a visually similar MacBook or a different processor variant may behave differently. Find the identifier in macOS before erasing the machine, then match it character-for-character to Google’s certified-model list.
The list was updated September 2, 2026, and its dates can change. Check the live page immediately before installation at Google’s ChromeOS Flex certified models list.
MacBook Air models currently listed
| Mac model identifier | Google list status (September 2, 2026 update) | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air 6,1 | Certified through 2026 | Webcam does not work. |
| MacBook Air 7,2 | Certified through 2027 | Webcam does not work. |
| MacBook Air 5,1 | Decertified | Not covered by current certification guarantees. |
| MacBook Pro 9,2 | Decertified | Not covered by current certification guarantees. |
| MacBook Pro 11,2 | Decertified | Not covered by current certification guarantees. |
“Certified through” is a support boundary, not a promise that every component works forever. A model can remain capable of booting Flex after its certification period while losing Google’s guarantee for future releases. Conversely, a decertified model may boot successfully but has no current certification coverage.

Other components are tested but not guaranteed on every certified model. These include Bluetooth, keyboard shortcuts and function keys, touchscreens, SD-card slots and automatic screen rotation. On the two certified MacBook Air models above, Google specifically records that the webcam does not work, so a “certified” label does not mean video calls are supported.
Google explains the scope of certification in About ChromeOS Flex certified models. Read the model’s individual notes rather than relying on the green certification label alone.
Minimum hardware and installation requirements
Google’s minimum target-device requirements are:
- An Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible processor
- At least 4 GB of RAM
- At least 16 GB of internal storage
- Firmware that can boot from USB
These are minimums, not a performance guarantee. Google does not recommend or support devices with Intel or AMD processors or graphics from 2012 or earlier, or Nvidia graphics from 2014 or earlier; such hardware is unlikely to work reliably.

On a non-certified MacBook, performance, hardware functionality and stability are not guaranteed even when the machine meets the raw RAM, storage and processor requirements.
Creating installation media requires a USB drive of 8 GB or larger. The creation process erases the drive, so copy its contents elsewhere first. A 16 GB drive exceeds Google’s minimum and leaves room for the installer workflow, but no particular brand is required. Full preparation guidance is available in Google’s Prepare for installation instructions.
How to evaluate a specific MacBook before installing
1. Record the exact identifier
In macOS, open the Apple menu, choose About This Mac, and note the model information. For a more precise identifier, open System Information and inspect the hardware overview. Record the identifier and processor details before downloading anything.

2. Check the live certified-model entry
Search the certified-model list for that exact identifier. Confirm the status, certification end date and every model-specific note, especially webcam, graphics, wireless and input-device exceptions. If the identifier is absent, treat the computer as non-certified.
3. Decide which hardware is essential
Make a short list of functions you cannot lose: Wi-Fi, speakers, microphone, sleep and resume, external display output, keyboard shortcuts, Bluetooth, SD-card access and camera use. Certification guarantees some of these, but not all, and the MacBook Air 6,1 and 7,2 webcam limitation is explicit.
4. Audit software dependencies
Write down any Android apps, Windows programs, Parallels virtual machines or Linux packages you use. Flex’s limited Android support and unsupported Parallels virtual machines can be deal-breakers even when the Mac’s basic hardware works.
5. Check your security requirement
If you need ChromeOS verified boot or a Google security chip, stop: Flex cannot add those components to a MacBook. If automatic encryption with whatever TPM support the Mac provides is sufficient, document that decision for your own records or your organization’s security review.
6. Test without erasing macOS
Use the USB option first. A live session lets you check startup, display, Wi-Fi, sound, touchpad, keyboard, USB ports, suspend and resume, and external monitors. It also gives you a chance to discover the non-working webcam before installation.

- Back up the MacBook. Copy documents, browser data and any other files you need. An internal installation can remove the existing operating system and its data.
- Prepare an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive. Move everything off the drive because the installer-creation process formats it.
- Create the ChromeOS Flex installer. Follow Google’s current preparation instructions and select the USB device carefully; choosing the wrong removable drive erases that drive.
- Shut down the MacBook and connect the installer. Disconnect other removable storage so the boot selection is unambiguous.
- Open the Mac’s boot picker. Start the Mac while holding the key combination that displays available startup disks, then select the USB installer. The exact key behavior can vary by Mac firmware, so use the model’s documented startup procedure if the picker does not appear.
- Choose the try-from-USB option first. Work through the setup screens without selecting the internal-drive installation. This is the safest point to test wireless, audio, display output, suspend, keyboard behavior and every port you need.
- Record failures by component. Test the webcam separately from the microphone, and test Bluetooth, function keys, SD-card access and external displays because those features are not guaranteed on every certified model.
- Install only after the test passes. The installation path can erase the MacBook’s internal storage. Confirm your backup and that you no longer need the existing macOS installation before proceeding.
- Recheck the certified entry after setup. Once Flex is running, compare the installed model and current support information with Google’s live list; certification dates and notes are subject to change.
Common failure modes and practical responses
The Mac does not boot from the USB drive
Confirm that the installer was created on an 8 GB-or-larger drive, that the drive was not unplugged during creation, and that the Mac’s boot picker is being opened with the correct startup procedure. Try another USB port or drive if the picker does not detect the installer. If the model cannot boot from USB, it does not meet Google’s installation requirements.
The webcam is missing in video-call tests
On MacBook Air 6,1 and 7,2, this is an identified certification note rather than an unexpected driver problem: Google says the webcam does not work. Plan for an external camera or retain another computer for camera-dependent meetings; do not assume a reinstall will fix it.
Bluetooth, function keys or the SD-card slot behave inconsistently
These are among the features Google says are not guaranteed on every certified model. Check the model-specific notes, test the feature from USB, and decide whether a workaround is acceptable before installing. A feature that works in one Flex release is not evidence that Google guarantees it on every future release.

Linux support varies by model. Verify the exact identifier and current Flex documentation, then test the environment from USB where possible. Meeting the 4 GB RAM and 16 GB storage minimums alone does not establish Linux support.
A non-certified MacBook runs but has glitches
This is within the expected support boundary. Google guarantees functionality only on certified models; non-certified devices have no guarantee for performance, stability or individual components. Keep a complete backup and avoid making the machine your only work computer until sustained testing shows that it meets your needs.
When ChromeOS Flex is a sensible MacBook choice
Good fit
- You mainly need a browser, web applications, cloud storage and standard keyboard or touchpad input.
- Your exact MacBook is certified and its support end date covers the period you plan to use it.
- You can live without a built-in webcam on the certified MacBook Air 6,1 or 7,2.
- Your workflow does not require broad Android app access or Parallels Windows virtual machines.
- You have tested the live USB session and confirmed the ports, network, sound, sleep and external display behavior you need.
Poor fit
- Your security policy requires Google’s security chip and ChromeOS verified boot.
- You rely on Android applications outside the limited deployment Google documents for Flex.
- You need Parallels Desktop to host Windows.
- You require a built-in camera on a MacBook Air 6,1 or 7,2.
- You need guaranteed Bluetooth, function keys, touchscreen, SD-card or automatic-rotation behavior that your model does not specifically guarantee.
- You are considering a pre-2013 Intel or AMD system or a Mac with Nvidia graphics from before 2015, which Google does not recommend or support.
A decision checklist before you erase the drive
- Have you matched the exact Mac model identifier to the current certified list?
- Is the certification end date acceptable for the computer’s planned service life?
- Have you read every model-specific hardware note, including the webcam status?
- Do you accept the absence of Google security hardware and verified boot?
- Does your software list avoid unsupported Parallels Windows VMs and broad Android-app assumptions?
- Have you confirmed Linux requirements for this exact model if you develop software?
- Does the Mac meet the 4 GB RAM, 16 GB storage and USB-boot requirements?
- Have you backed up the internal drive and prepared an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive whose contents can be erased?
- Have you tested the live USB session with every essential device and workflow?
If any answer is “no,” keep macOS in place until you resolve that item. Testing from USB costs less than discovering an incompatibility after the internal drive has been erased.
Bottom line for MacBook owners
ChromeOS Flex is a practical way to give some Intel MacBooks a lightweight, ChromeOS-like system, especially when the exact model is certified and the work is primarily web-based. It is not a way to reproduce every Chromebook capability. The missing Google security chip and verified boot are fundamental; Android support is limited, Parallels Windows VMs are unsupported, Linux development varies by model, and the certified MacBook Air 6,1 and 7,2 have non-working webcams according to Google’s September 2, 2026 list.
Check the exact identifier, read the current model notes, test Flex from USB and decide based on the features you actually need—not simply on whether the MacBook can start the installer.
