Start with the exact Mac model. ChromeOS Flex compatibility is certified by model identifier, not by the MacBook family name. A certified model is tested for basic hardware functions, while a similar but uncertified variant can behave differently after installation or an update. Check the current Google ChromeOS Flex certified-model table before changing settings or reinstalling.

For the model list reviewed on September 2, 2026, MacBook Air 6,1 is certified through 2026 and MacBook Air 7,2 through 2027. MacBook Air 5,1, MacBook Pro 9,2 and MacBook Pro 11,2 are listed as decertified. The Air 6,1 and Air 7,2 entries also note that the webcam does not work. Certification has an end date: after that year, Google no longer includes the model in ongoing testing or guarantees fixes.

What ChromeOS Flex certification means on a MacBook

Google treats each hardware model as a separate compatibility target. Two MacBooks that look alike can use different wireless chipsets, audio hardware, firmware or touchpad controllers, so a result on one model is not proof that another will work. Google says most newer Mac models are not supported. An uncertified Mac may boot and appear usable, but stability, functionality and performance across updates are not guaranteed.

For a certified model, Google guarantees at least one working method for audio input and output, the internal display when present, video output, installation, network connectivity (Wi‑Fi, Ethernet or both when present), the touchpad when present, keyboard, sleep and resume, system graphics and UI, USB, and the webcam when present. “At least one method” matters: it does not promise that every port, microphone, speaker path, camera mode or wireless feature will work.

Dates and feature notes can change, so use the live table for your exact identifier and region before installing. A model that has passed its certification end date can continue to run, but Google does not promise that future updates will be tested or that a later regression will be fixed.

Prepare safely before installing

A full ChromeOS Flex installation erases the computer. Save documents, browser data, photos, encryption keys and any other files to another disk or cloud service first. If you are only testing Flex from USB, remember that the installer drive itself is also erased while it is created.

Hardware requirements

Item Google requirement or guidance Why it matters
Processor Intel or AMD x86-64 compatible device Flex is not intended for Apple silicon or other unsupported architectures
Memory At least 4 GB RAM Below this, installation and everyday responsiveness are outside the stated baseline
Internal storage At least 16 GB Provides the minimum space for the operating system and local data
Installer USB At least 8 GB Creating media erases the drive; some drives may not boot reliably

Google also identifies some older processor and graphics combinations as not recommended or unsupported. Meeting the memory and storage minimums therefore does not make an uncertified Mac a supported device.

  • Supports Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP/ Mac OS X 10.9-10.14

Create and use the installer

  1. Back up the Mac and confirm that you can restore important files without the internal disk.
  2. Use a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Its contents will be erased. If a drive will not boot, try a different manufacturer’s drive; Google notes that some USB drives do not work as installers.
  3. Create the ChromeOS Flex installation media with Google’s official Chromebook Recovery Utility workflow.
  4. Shut down the Mac, insert the installer and start it while holding the key that opens the Mac startup picker (usually the Option key on Intel Macs).
  5. Select the USB installer and choose the option to try Flex first if you want to check Wi‑Fi, sound, the touchpad and sleep before erasing the internal disk.
  6. Only start the permanent installation after confirming your backup and accepting the data-erasure warning.

Testing from USB can reveal obvious incompatibility, but it is not a guarantee that every function will behave identically after an internal installation or a later update.

Fix Wi‑Fi that is missing or cannot connect

Google’s documented symptom is “ChromeOS Flex devices not finding or connecting to Wi‑Fi network.” The prescribed checks are deliberately limited: they distinguish a disabled radio or a Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth interaction from an unsupported chipset. They do not turn an unsupported adapter into a supported one.

Run the documented checks in order

  1. Check for a hardware control. If the Mac has a physical wireless switch or a keyboard key that controls wireless, toggle it once, wait a few seconds and toggle it back. Some models expose no separate switch; in that case continue.
  2. Test Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth combinations. Turn Bluetooth off and test Wi‑Fi, then turn Wi‑Fi off and back on with Bluetooth in its previous state. This can show whether the radios are interfering during initialization.
  3. Use Quick Settings. Open the system tray, select the network controls and switch Wi‑Fi off, wait briefly, then switch it on. Choose the network again and enter its password.
  4. Compare networks. If available, try another access point or a phone hotspot. A connection to a second network points toward the original router, band or security configuration rather than the Mac’s radio.
  5. Record the failure. Note the exact model identifier, Flex version, whether Wi‑Fi is absent or merely unable to authenticate, visible networks, Bluetooth state and whether Ethernet works. Persistent failures should be escalated through ChromeOS Flex support with those details.

When the checks do not help

Google documents that some Wi‑Fi chipsets are unsupported. If the Wi‑Fi control never appears, no networks are listed in multiple locations and the same behavior occurs after a clean boot, treat chipset compatibility as the leading possibility rather than repeatedly resetting settings. A USB Ethernet adapter can provide temporary connectivity for updates or support, but it does not repair the internal radio.

Sound problems: what is guaranteed and what is not

For every certified model, Google guarantees audio input by at least one method and audio output by at least one method. That guarantee does not specify which microphone, speaker, headphone jack or digital output is the working path. The official material for this topic does not provide a MacBook-specific sound reset or driver-reinstallation procedure.

Identify the failed path

  • Open the system volume controls and confirm the selected output is the intended internal speaker, headphone device or connected display.
  • Play a known audio source, then test headphones or another output if available. A working alternate output establishes that Flex is running audio even if one path is unavailable.
  • For input, select the intended microphone and use a browser-based recording or call test. Test the internal microphone and an external USB headset separately.
  • Disconnect Bluetooth audio while testing the built-in devices; wireless headsets can become the selected output without being obvious.
  • Record the exact model and which input or output paths work. Do not describe “no sound” when only one port or speaker is affected.

Do not present a generic driver reinstall, firmware flash or macOS audio reset as a Google-verified Mac fix. If no input or output method works on a certified model, verify the model entry and Flex release, reproduce the problem after a clean restart, and escalate with the model and symptom details.

Trackpad failures and limited gestures

The touchpad, when present, is one of the functions Google guarantees on a certified model. The cited documentation does not describe a MacBook-specific trackpad reset sequence, and certification does not promise every macOS gesture or pressure-sensing feature.

Separate a dead pad from a missing gesture

  1. Restart Flex and test the pointer at the login screen. If it works there but stops after sign-in, the issue is more likely a session or setting problem than a disconnected device.
  2. Connect a USB mouse temporarily. This gives you a way to navigate while checking settings and does not prove that the internal pad is supported.
  3. Test basic pointer movement and a single click before testing scrolling, secondary click or multi-finger gestures. A basic click working with gestures absent is a feature limitation, not total touchpad failure.
  4. Check the exact model’s certification notes and whether the pad is physically present and undamaged. Similar Mac variants can use different controllers.

On a certified model, a completely nonresponsive built-in touchpad should be documented as a compatibility or hardware issue rather than “fixed” with an unverified driver procedure. Use the external mouse while gathering the model identifier, Flex version and reproduction steps for support.

Sleep and wake problems

Google lists sleep and resume among the guaranteed functions for certified models, while its known-issues guidance also warns that sleep/resume malfunction can be a hardware issue. There is no universal MacBook command or reset published in the cited material.

Safe diagnostic sequence

  1. Confirm the model is currently certified, not merely listed under an old certification period.
  2. Disconnect docks, USB storage, displays and Bluetooth accessories, then test sleep from the system menu. Record whether the Mac fails to enter sleep, sleeps but will not wake, or wakes with a blank display.
  3. Try one additional sleep/wake cycle after a normal restart. If the failure is intermittent, note whether it follows battery use, AC power, a closed lid or an external display.
  4. Check whether the keyboard or touchpad can wake the system. If only one wake method fails, describe that specific path.
  5. If the problem persists on a certified model, treat it as a possible hardware issue and escalate with the exact model, power state, accessories and observed behavior.

Do not promise that changing a power setting, reinstalling a driver or resetting firmware will repair every MacBook sleep failure. Those steps are not established as a universal ChromeOS Flex fix by the cited Google documentation.

Black screen or long startup after installation

A Mac can install Flex successfully and still boot to a black screen or pause for a long time because the startup disk choice was not retained. Google’s Mac installation troubleshooting guidance addresses this boot-selection problem separately from Wi‑Fi, sound, trackpad and sleep issues.

Set the correct startup choice

  1. Power on the Mac while holding the key that opens startup options.
  2. Select EFI Boot or ChromeOS Flex, depending on the label shown by that Mac.
  3. After Flex starts, set that choice as the default startup disk using the available startup-disk option so the Mac does not continue searching for the previous system.
  4. Restart and verify that the same choice boots without holding the startup key.

PRAM/NVRAM warning

If selecting the correct startup disk does not solve the black screen, Google describes clearing PRAM/NVRAM because it can retain the previous startup-disk information. Do not reset NVRAM on iMac 5,2 or MacBook 2,1, 3,1 and 4,1; Google warns that those very old models can lose functionality after the reset. This workaround concerns boot selection only. It is not a fix for a missing Wi‑Fi adapter, silent speakers, a dead trackpad or broken sleep.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision tree

  • Flex will not install: confirm x86-64 compatibility, 4 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, an 8 GB-or-larger installer and a complete backup. Check whether the model is certified or explicitly unsupported.
  • It installs but Wi‑Fi is absent: perform the hardware-control, Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth and Quick Settings checks. If no networks appear, investigate chipset support and escalate with the model details.
  • Only one sound path fails: test every available output and input, verify the selected device and report the failing path rather than reinstalling drivers blindly.
  • The pointer works but gestures do not: treat this as a feature difference until the model notes say otherwise; test a basic click and use a USB mouse for diagnosis.
  • Sleep fails on a certified Mac: isolate accessories and power conditions, then report the behavior as a possible hardware or compatibility issue.
  • The screen is black after installation: choose EFI Boot or ChromeOS Flex and make it the default; consider the NVRAM procedure only when the model is not one of the specifically excluded old Macs.

What to include in a support report

A useful report lets support distinguish a model limitation from a one-off configuration problem. Include the Mac’s exact model identifier, whether it was certified on the date you checked, the certification end year, Flex version, installation method, whether the issue also occurred when booting from USB, and the precise symptom.

  • For Wi‑Fi: whether the control is missing, whether networks appear, authentication errors, Bluetooth state and any Ethernet result.
  • For sound: selected input or output, internal versus external device and which paths work.
  • For the trackpad: pointer movement, clicking, scrolling and gestures tested separately.
  • For sleep: lid or menu sleep, battery or AC power, attached accessories and the exact wake behavior.
  • For boot: the startup option selected, time spent on a blank screen and whether the default choice was saved.

That level of detail is more actionable than reporting that “Flex does not work on my Mac.”
