Start by identifying whether your Chromebook cannot join a Wi‑Fi network at all, or whether it joins Wi‑Fi but cannot reach the internet. Confirm Wi‑Fi is enabled, run ChromeOS Diagnostics, restart the Chromebook, and test after each change. Then compare the Chromebook with another network and another device to determine whether the fault follows the Chromebook or stays with the network.

First, identify what is actually failing

“Won’t connect to Wi‑Fi” can describe several different states. The correct next step depends on which one you see:

What you see What it suggests First useful check
The intended network does not appear or the Chromebook will not join it A Wi‑Fi, Chromebook, or router-association problem Confirm Wi‑Fi is on and the Chromebook is trying to join the intended network
The Chromebook shows it is connected to Wi‑Fi, but websites do not load The local wireless link may work while the router, internet service, or sign-in page does not Check the router/internet connection and whether the network requires a portal sign-in
A café, hotel, airport, or guest network appears connected but provides no internet A captive portal may still require web authentication Open a page beginning with http:// to prompt the sign-in page
The Chromebook fails on one network but works elsewhere The original router or network configuration is more likely than the Chromebook Test another trusted Wi‑Fi network, such as a phone hotspot
Other devices also fail on the same network The network, router, or internet service is the stronger suspect Test another device and contact the network administrator or internet provider when appropriate

Make one change at a time and test immediately. Google’s Chromebook Help guidance specifically says to test the Chromebook after each step, because changing several things at once makes it impossible to tell which action helped.

1. Check Wi‑Fi and the intended network

Confirm Wi‑Fi is enabled

Open the Chromebook’s connection controls and make sure Wi‑Fi is turned on. Verify that the device is attempting to join the network you actually intend to use rather than a nearby saved network. If the network name is visible, select it and try the connection again.

If the Chromebook is already shown as connected, do not treat that as proof that internet access is working. Connection to the access point and access to websites are separate tests. Continue with the router, portal, and Diagnostics checks below.

Check the network itself

Look at the router or access point and determine whether it appears to be operating normally. If the network has an outage, no Chromebook setting can restore internet access. On a school, workplace, hotel, or other managed network, the administrator may have imposed a sign-in or device policy that you cannot change locally.

Test a website after this check. If pages still do not load, continue rather than repeatedly toggling Wi‑Fi.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Run ChromeOS Network Diagnostics

Open Diagnostics

  1. Open the Chromebook launcher.
  2. Search for Diagnostics.
  3. Open the Diagnostics app and run its connectivity tests.

Google says Diagnostics is available on ChromeOS version 90 and later. Its connectivity checks include Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, cellular connections, and Google Services. The app can save test details so you can share a report with support.

Save the results

Save the Diagnostics output even if a test appears inconclusive. Record which network was being tested and whether the Chromebook was connected, unable to join, or connected without usable internet. That context helps a manufacturer, school administrator, or network administrator distinguish a device problem from a network policy or service problem.

Run the tests before making additional changes, then test the connection again. If Diagnostics identifies a persistent connectivity problem, keep the saved report for escalation rather than deleting it.

3. Restart and test again

Restart the Chromebook normally, then try the same Wi‑Fi connection again. A restart is a reversible troubleshooting step recommended in Google’s connection guidance. Test the same website or service after the restart so the result is comparable.

Avoid changing multiple settings before this test. If the restart fixes the problem, note that result; if it does not, proceed to network isolation. The distinction matters because a restart that fails on one network does not establish that the Chromebook’s Wi‑Fi hardware is defective.

4. Isolate the Chromebook from the network

The fastest practical way to narrow the fault is to compare two variables: the Chromebook on another network, and another device on the original network. This isolation approach is recommended in a Chromebook Community guide by Product Expert Alumni Jim Dantin; it is community guidance rather than a statement of official Google policy.

Test the Chromebook on another trusted Wi‑Fi network

  1. Use another trusted network if one is available, such as a phone hotspot or a different home or guest network.
  2. Connect the Chromebook to that network.
  3. Open a website and confirm whether internet access works.
  4. Compare the result with the original network.

If the Chromebook works on the second network, the original router, access point, internet service, or network configuration becomes the stronger suspect. This result does not by itself identify a particular router setting, frequency band, or security mode; the available guidance does not establish a model-by-model compatibility matrix.

Test another device on the original network

  1. Connect a phone or another computer to the same Wi‑Fi network.
  2. Try to open a website.
  3. Compare that result with the Chromebook’s result.

If other devices also fail, investigate the network or contact its administrator or internet provider. If other devices work while the Chromebook fails, keep the Chromebook’s Diagnostics report and continue device-focused troubleshooting or contact the Chromebook manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the comparison to choose your next action

Chromebook on another network Other device on original network Most useful next action
Works Fails Investigate the original network, router, or internet service
Works Works Compare the Chromebook’s network behavior and saved Diagnostics report; involve the manufacturer or administrator if the failure persists
Fails Works Continue Chromebook-focused checks and escalate with Diagnostics results
Fails Fails Investigate the network first, then retest the Chromebook after service is restored

5. Handle public Wi‑Fi sign-in pages

Café, hotel, airport, library, and other guest networks can associate the Chromebook with Wi‑Fi before granting internet access. The network may require a captive-portal sign-in, acceptance of terms, room number, voucher, or another web step.

  1. Join the public Wi‑Fi network.
  2. Open a web page whose address begins with http://.
  3. Wait for the network’s sign-in page to appear.
  4. Complete the required sign-in or terms acceptance.
  5. Open another page to confirm that internet access now works.

Google recommends the http:// prompt for this situation. A Chromebook that is associated with Wi‑Fi but cannot load ordinary websites may therefore be waiting for authentication rather than suffering a radio or operating-system failure.

6. Try a wired connection as an optional diagnostic

If you already have a compatible USB Ethernet adapter and an Ethernet cable, connect the Chromebook to the router for a wired test. Google lists this as a troubleshooting option. The purpose is to determine whether a wired path can reach the network; it is not a Wi‑Fi repair.

Tenda WiFi Adapter for Desktop PC, AX900 WiFi 6 USB WiFi Adapter 2.4G/5G | USB WiFi Dongle for Windows 11/10/7 (U11)
  • [Wifi 6 High-speed Transmission] - With WiFi 6 Technology and up to 900Mbps Speed (600 Mbps on 5 GHz band and 286 Mbps on 2.4 GHz band), the wifi adapter works well for 4K videos and games at ultra-high speed and low latency.
  • [High-Speed Dual-Band Connectivity] - Operating on the WiFi 6 (802.11ax) standard, the AX900 USB WiFi adapter achieves maximum speeds of 600Mbps (5GHz) and 286Mbps (2.4GHz). Note: A WiFi 6 router is required to reach the combined AX900 speed rating.
  • [Receive & Transmit Two-in-One] - By installing this wireless network card, a desktop computer can connect to a Wi-Fi network for internet access. Once connected, the computer can then use the same card to transmit a Wi-Fi signal and share its internet connection with other devices.
  • [Stay Safe Online] - Keep your connection secure with advanced WPA and WPA2 encryption. For the strongest and most reliable signal, we recommend placing the WiFi Adapter for Desktop PC within 30 feet of your router.
  • [Built-in Drivers for Quick Installation] - This wireless WiFi adapter is compatible with Windows 7, 10, and 11 (x86/x64 architectures). Drivers are pre-loaded on the device—simply plug it in, run the built-in setup file to install in just one click. Note: Not compatible with macOS, Linux, or Windows 8/8.1/XP.
  1. Connect the compatible USB Ethernet adapter to the Chromebook.
  2. Connect the adapter to the router with an Ethernet cable.
  3. Run the connection test and open a website.
  4. Compare the wired result with the Wi‑Fi result.

Wired success narrows the investigation but does not prove that the Chromebook’s Wi‑Fi hardware has failed. The adapter, cable, router port, network policy, and internet service all affect the result. Do not buy a particular adapter solely on the basis of this symptom; compatibility varies, and the supported guidance only establishes the value of an adapter you already have or can verify as compatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Escalate with useful evidence

Contact the Chromebook manufacturer

If Wi‑Fi remains unusable after the immediate checks, Diagnostics, restart, and cross-network comparison, contact the Chromebook manufacturer. Provide the saved Diagnostics report, ChromeOS version, the network being tested, and the exact behavior: whether the network is visible, whether joining fails, or whether the Chromebook connects without internet.

Explain what changed after each test. “Works on a hotspot but not at home” is more actionable than “Wi‑Fi is broken,” because it points support toward the original network rather than an undifferentiated device failure.

Involve a school or workplace administrator

Managed Chromebooks may be subject to organization-controlled network policies, authentication, or device management. If the device belongs to a school or employer, contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass policy. The administrator can verify whether the network requires a managed certificate, portal process, or enrollment condition that an individual user cannot alter.

Contact the network administrator or internet provider

If multiple devices fail on the same Wi‑Fi network, report the issue to the person or organization responsible for that network. For a home connection, that may be the internet provider or the person who manages the router. Tell them whether the Chromebook works elsewhere and whether another device can use the affected network.

Why ChromeOS recovery should not be your first Wi‑Fi fix

Do not jump to Chromebook recovery for an ordinary connection problem. Google’s recovery documentation says that recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases everything on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including downloaded files. That is a destructive operating-system reinstall, not a routine network reset.

Use the reversible sequence first: confirm Wi‑Fi and the intended network, run Diagnostics, restart, compare networks and devices, handle any captive portal, and try an optional wired test if available. Consider recovery only when an appropriate support professional has determined that reinstalling ChromeOS is necessary and you have protected any files stored locally.

A compact decision path

  1. Wi‑Fi off or wrong network: enable Wi‑Fi and select the intended network, then test.
  2. Connected but websites fail: check the router/internet path and look for a public-network portal.
  3. No clear cause: open Launcher, search for Diagnostics, run the connectivity tests, save the report, and test again.
  4. Still failing: restart and retest.
  5. Need to locate the fault: test the Chromebook on another trusted Wi‑Fi network and another device on the original network.
  6. Have compatible equipment: use a USB Ethernet adapter for a wired diagnostic comparison.
  7. Persistent problem: send Diagnostics results to the manufacturer, network administrator, or managed-device administrator.
  8. Before any reinstall: remember that recovery erases local files and reinstalls ChromeOS.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling a Chromebook “offline” when it is connected to Wi‑Fi but waiting for a captive-portal sign-in.
  • Changing several settings at once instead of testing after each step.
  • Assuming a failure on one router proves the Chromebook’s Wi‑Fi hardware is bad.
  • Assuming a wired connection, if it works, proves a Wi‑Fi hardware failure; it is only a narrowing test.
  • Buying a router or adapter before establishing whether the existing network or device is responsible.
  • Running ChromeOS recovery before saving files and obtaining support guidance.
  • Reporting only “Wi‑Fi does not work” without stating whether the network appears, whether joining succeeds, and what happened on another network.

What to record before asking for help

  • The Chromebook’s ChromeOS version.
  • The exact network name and whether it is home, school, work, or public Wi‑Fi.
  • Whether Wi‑Fi is visible and whether the Chromebook can join it.
  • Whether the Chromebook shows connected while websites fail.
  • Whether an http:// page opened a sign-in portal.
  • Whether the Chromebook worked on a hotspot or another trusted network.
  • Whether another device worked on the original network.
  • The saved ChromeOS Diagnostics results.
  • Whether a compatible USB Ethernet adapter produced a different result.

These observations let support staff focus on the correct side of the connection instead of repeating generic steps.

How to interpret mixed results

Some tests produce results that seem contradictory. For example, the Chromebook may pass a Wi‑Fi check but fail a Google Services check. Treat that as evidence that the wireless association itself is not the whole problem; save the report and describe exactly which test failed. Similarly, a successful hotspot test shows that the Chromebook can communicate over at least one wireless network, but it does not identify why the original network rejects it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the original network is public, repeat the test after completing its sign-in page. If it is managed, do not assume that a password is the only requirement: an administrator may need to approve the device or provide organization-specific authentication. The person responsible for that network can confirm those requirements more reliably than changing random Chromebook settings.

Keep the troubleshooting reversible

The recommended order is deliberate. Checking the connection state, running Diagnostics, restarting, and comparing networks do not erase local files. A wired test is also observational: it gives you another path for comparison. Record each result before moving on, especially if you are switching between a home router and a phone hotspot.

There is no supported reason in these steps to purchase a new router, mesh system, or branded adapter immediately. A purchase could add cost without addressing a portal, outage, policy restriction, or service interruption. Use existing equipment first, verify compatibility before using an Ethernet adapter, and escalate with evidence when the cause remains unclear.

When the problem is likely outside the Chromebook

A network-wide failure is the clearest sign to involve the network side: another phone or computer cannot use the same Wi‑Fi, and the Chromebook also fails there. An outage, router problem, or administrator policy then deserves attention before device repair. Conversely, if every other device works on the original network and the Chromebook fails on both that network and a trusted second network, provide the manufacturer with Diagnostics results and the comparison details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are probabilities, not definitive hardware diagnoses. The tests narrow the possibilities so the next support conversation starts with useful facts rather than assumptions about a specific router band, security mode, or Chromebook model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Chromebook say it is connected to Wi‑Fi but websites will not open?

The Chromebook may have a local Wi‑Fi connection while the router or internet service is unavailable, or a public network may still require captive-portal sign-in. Check the router/internet path and open a page beginning with http:// on guest Wi‑Fi to prompt the portal.

How do I open Wi‑Fi Diagnostics on a Chromebook?

Open the launcher, search for Diagnostics, and run the connectivity tests. Google says the app is available on ChromeOS version 90 and later and lets you save test details for support.

Should I recover my Chromebook to fix Wi‑Fi?

Not as an early step. Google says recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases files stored on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including downloads. Complete reversible network checks and obtain support guidance first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does it mean if my Chromebook works on a phone hotspot?

It makes the original router, network configuration, or internet service more likely to be responsible. Test another device on the original network as well, because the comparison distinguishes a network-wide problem from a Chromebook-specific one.

Do I need to buy a USB Ethernet adapter?

No. Ethernet is an optional diagnostic. Use one only if you already have, or can verify, a compatible adapter and cable. A wired result helps compare connection paths but does not itself repair Wi‑Fi or prove that wireless hardware has failed.

What should I tell Chromebook support?

Share the saved Diagnostics report, ChromeOS version, network type, whether the network appears and accepts the connection, whether websites fail after connecting, and results on another Wi‑Fi network or another device. Those details identify whether the issue is more likely on the Chromebook or the network.

Why does public Wi‑Fi connect but remain unusable?

Guest networks often require a captive-portal page for terms, a voucher, or other authentication. After joining, open an address beginning with http://, complete the sign-in, and then test a normal website.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Could a school or work Chromebook need administrator help?

Yes. Managed devices and networks can use organization-controlled authentication or policies. Contact the school or workplace administrator instead of trying to bypass those controls.

The Bottom Line

Check the connection state, run ChromeOS Diagnostics, restart, and test after every change. Compare the Chromebook with another trusted network and another device, complete any public Wi‑Fi sign-in, and use Ethernet only as an optional diagnostic. Save the results and escalate to the manufacturer or network administrator before considering recovery, which erases local files.
