There is no single best VPN for every Chromebook. First check whether your device supports Android apps and whether a school or work administrator restricts installs. Then choose between a built-in ChromeOS VPN connection and a compatible Android VPN app; the right route depends on the protocols and controls you need.
Start with your Chromebook, not the VPN brand
ChromeOS offers built-in VPN connections, while some Chromebooks can install VPN apps through Google Play. These routes are not interchangeable: built-in setup depends on supported protocols and configuration, while an Android app depends on Play Store availability and may provide app-specific features.
- Check Android-app support: Google Play is available only on some Chromebook models. Google’s guide explains how to install and use Android apps on a Chromebook.
- Check management restrictions: School or work administrators may block Play Store access or prevent app downloads. If the Chromebook is managed, ask the administrator what VPN options are allowed.
- Check the protocol or configuration you need: ChromeOS’s built-in options cover common setups, but advanced OpenVPN features or importing an
.ovpnconfiguration may call for an Android app.

Choose a setup route
Use ChromeOS built-in VPN support
Google documents IKEv2, L2TP/IPsec, basic OpenVPN, and WireGuard on some Chromebooks. Availability and setup depend on the device and VPN configuration. This route can suit readers who have the connection details for a supported protocol and do not need extra app features.

Install an Android VPN app
If the Chromebook supports Google Play and app installation is permitted, an Android VPN app may be the more direct choice for an app-managed service. Google also suggests considering OpenVPN for Android when advanced OpenVPN features or .ovpn import are needed. Confirm the app supports your Chromebook and the setup you intend to use.
Do not mistake a browser extension for a device-wide VPN
A browser extension and a VPN app can cover different traffic. Google’s full-tunnel description includes Chrome windows, Chrome apps, and Android apps passing through the VPN connection. With split tunneling, selected traffic can be excluded, for example to retain local-network access. The exact behavior depends on the app and configuration, so check which traffic is routed before relying on it.

Compare candidates by compatibility and controls
Proton VPN, NordVPN, and ExpressVPN publish Chromebook setup information. Those guides make them candidates to investigate, not a tested ranking: the available evidence does not establish which is fastest, most reliable, or best value.

Check what happens when the VPN disconnects
Google documents an Always-on VPN setting for managed ChromeOS devices. Under an enforced Always-on configuration, traffic is blocked if the VPN connection fails, until it reconnects. Google also cautions that ChromeOS does not control Android app behavior after power loss. If continuity matters, review the app’s behavior after disconnection or sleep and determine whether the Chromebook is subject to an administrator-enforced setting.

A simple decision checklist
- Check whether your Chromebook supports Google Play and can install Android apps.
- If the device is managed, confirm with its administrator which VPN methods and installations are permitted.
- Decide whether a built-in ChromeOS protocol is sufficient or whether you need an Android app for advanced OpenVPN features or an
.ovpnimport. - Confirm whether the chosen setup is full tunnel or split tunnel, and which Chrome, Android, and local-network traffic it includes.
- Review disconnect, sleep, and Always-on behavior, then check paid-plan features and device limits against your requirements.
