Yes. A Chromebook can be hacked, and a Google Account used on it can be compromised even if the laptop’s operating system has not been breached. ChromeOS uses protections such as Verified Boot, sandboxing, encryption, and automatic updates to reduce risk, but no device is immune to every attack.

How ChromeOS security works—and where it stops

ChromeOS uses several layers of protection. Verified Boot checks the system at startup and can repair it if it detects corruption. Sandboxing helps isolate webpages and applications, while encryption protects locally stored user data. Automatic updates deliver security fixes to supported devices. These measures make certain attacks harder and can limit their impact; they do not prevent someone from stealing a password or exploiting every possible weakness. Google’s ChromeOS security overview describes these protections.

Threats can come from outside the operating system’s core. Chromium’s security documentation discusses malicious webpages, phishing, network manipulation, and malicious or compromised Android apps. Extensions and apps can also request access to data or device features, so where they come from and what permissions they need matter. The UK National Cyber Security Centre’s browser guidance warns that extensions can have broad access and that previously trusted extensions may later become harmful.

What can put a Chromebook or its user at risk?

Phishing and stolen Google Account credentials

A convincing fake login page or message can trick you into giving away your password. If someone obtains your Google Account credentials, they may access account data without defeating ChromeOS protections on the Chromebook itself. A security alert or unfamiliar account activity therefore does not, by itself, prove that the laptop’s operating system was hacked.

Malicious webpages, apps, and extensions

A webpage can attempt to exploit a browser weakness, and an app or extension may behave in ways its user did not expect. Install only extensions you need, review the permissions they request, and remove ones you no longer use or do not recognize. Apply the same caution to Android apps and Linux software: use sources you trust and consider what access an app needs.

Devices that no longer receive security updates

Support dates vary by device. Google’s policy provides 10 years of automatic updates for ChromeOS devices, but the final update date is specific to the device or platform. After that date, the Chromebook no longer receives ChromeOS and browser security updates, increasing its exposure to newly discovered vulnerabilities.

To check your device’s schedule, open Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details → Update schedule. If an older device receives extended updates, some models may lose Android app and Google Play Store support; check the terms shown for that particular device before deciding whether it still meets your needs. Google’s Auto Update policy explains update eligibility.

Physical access to the Chromebook

ChromeOS includes protections against short-term physical attacks, but they cannot guarantee safety against a capable attacker with unlimited access. The Chromium Project’s security whitepaper puts the limit plainly: “A dedicated adversary with unlimited physical access to a ChromeOS device is hard to defend against.” The ChromeOS security whitepaper describes this as a general security limitation, not evidence of a particular attack.

What to do if you suspect a Chromebook was hacked

First identify what looks wrong. An account alert, unfamiliar sign-in, changed recovery details, unusual browser behavior, a suspicious extension, unwanted app behavior, and a corrupted operating system point to different problems and need different responses.

If you see unfamiliar Google Account activity

  1. Use a trusted device to review your Google Account activity and secure the account.
  2. If you cannot sign in or find changes you did not make, follow Google’s account recovery steps.
  3. Review recovery information and other account-security settings after regaining access.

A Chromebook reset does not recover stolen credentials or secure an account by itself. Follow Google’s guidance for securing a compromised account.

If a webpage, extension, or app seems suspicious

  • Remove extensions you do not recognize or need, and review the permissions of those you keep.
  • Uninstall apps you do not trust, especially if their behavior or requested access is unexpected.
  • Install available ChromeOS updates if the device remains eligible.

These checks address browser and app concerns; they do not establish that the operating system itself has been compromised.

If ChromeOS is damaged or corrupted

Google’s Chromebook recovery process reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases files stored locally. Back up local files first if the Chromebook is usable and you can do so safely, then follow Google’s recovery instructions.

A Powerwash restores factory settings and uses cryptographic erasure for user data, but some device-related information may remain. It is not a substitute for securing a compromised Google Account. See Google’s instructions for resetting a Chromebook.

Should you keep using an older Chromebook?

Base the decision on the individual device’s final update date, whether it still receives ChromeOS and browser security updates, and whether it supports the apps you need. A Chromebook that has reached its final update date will not receive new ChromeOS or browser security fixes. For an older device on extended updates, verify whether Android apps and the Google Play Store remain available for that model before relying on them.

Google has made vendor claims about the absence of reported successful ransomware or virus attacks on ChromeOS. Those claims are not a measure of every attack, account compromise, or security incident, so they should not be taken to mean that Chromebooks cannot be hacked.
