If your Chromebook says “ChromeOS is missing or damaged,” you may be able to restore it yourself, but recovery permanently erases files stored on the device. Back up anything you can still access before proceeding. Try restarting first, then a factory reset if you can sign in; use ChromeOS recovery if those steps do not fix the error.
What the error means—and what happens to your files
The warning means ChromeOS needs repair or reinstallation. Google’s recovery process removes and reinstalls ChromeOS, and Google warns that it permanently erases everything on the Chromebook’s local drive, including downloaded files. If the device still lets you sign in or open files, copy anything important somewhere safe before recovery.
This warning concerns files stored on the Chromebook. It is not the same as files already synchronized to a cloud account, but do not assume a local file is backed up simply because you use cloud services.

Try restarting or resetting before recovery
- Turn the Chromebook off and back on. If it starts normally, check whether the warning returns.
- If you can sign in and the error remains, try a factory reset. This is Google’s next suggested step before OS recovery. A factory reset also removes local data, so back up accessible files first.
- If the warning persists, use ChromeOS recovery. For a work- or school-managed Chromebook, contact your administrator before resetting or recovering it.

Enter recovery mode on the right device
Standard Chromebook
- Disconnect attached devices and accessories.
- Hold Esc and Refresh (the circular-arrow key).
- While holding them, press Power.
- Release Power when the Chromebook starts, then release the other keys when the recovery message appears.
Some Chromebook models use Esc + Maximize instead of Esc + Refresh. If the standard combination does not work, check the instructions for your exact model rather than repeatedly trying random key combinations.
Tablet, Chromebox, or Chromebit
These devices use different recovery-button or key procedures. Identify the device type and follow Google’s matching instructions at Google’s Chromebook recovery guide. Do not apply the standard laptop-key sequence to a device with different hardware.

- The affected Chromebook.
- A working Chromebook, or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome.
- A USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating recovery media erases its contents, so use a drive whose files you can delete.
- Google’s Chromebook Recovery Utility, installed in Chrome on the working computer.
- Open Chromebook Recovery Utility on the working computer.
- Follow its prompts to identify the Chromebook model and create recovery media on the USB drive. The utility erases the drive while preparing it.
- Insert the recovery drive into the affected Chromebook while it is in recovery mode.
- When prompted, choose recovery from the external disk and follow the on-screen instructions.
Google’s instructions and utility details are at Recover your Chromebook. When recovery is complete, the utility can erase the recovery media if you want to reuse the drive; erasing it deletes its contents.
Fix common recovery-media errors
- “An unexpected error has occurred” or “The device you inserted doesn’t contain ChromeOS”: Erase the recovery storage and create the media again, or try a different USB flash drive. If correctly created media still fails, the drive may be malfunctioning.
- A prompt says to remove connected devices: Disconnect accessories and retry with only the recovery media attached.
- “The security module on this device isn’t working”: If the Chromebook is managed by a school or employer, contact its administrator. If the error continues, Google advises seeking help through the Chromebook help forum or contacting the manufacturer about repair.

If the problem is an update failure instead
A failed system update is not necessarily the same problem as a missing-or-damaged ChromeOS boot error. Google’s update troubleshooting sequence is to restart, switch to Wi-Fi or Ethernet if mobile data is causing trouble, reset the Chromebook, and recover ChromeOS if needed. Recovery still erases local downloads. If a work- or school-managed Chromebook cannot update, contact its administrator. Follow Google’s Chromebook update troubleshooting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck whether the Chromebook still receives updates
Recovery reinstalls ChromeOS; it does not extend the device’s update-support period. Google says eligible Chromebook models released in 2021 or later receive 10 years of updates. The exact Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date is device-specific. To check it, open Settings > About ChromeOS and look for the update schedule; do not estimate remaining support from the purchase date alone. See Google’s Chromebook update policy.
