Choose Chromebook Plus if your work is mainly in Chrome, Android, Linux or web apps and you have confirmed the files and peripherals you need work offline. Choose a Windows 11 laptop if you rely on Windows desktop software, a specialist device, complex Office features or a workflow that has not been verified on ChromeOS.

Neither category is a universal winner for speed, price, security or battery life. The sensible purchase is the exact model that runs your required apps, has the ports and support horizon you need, and fits your current budget. Use the checks below before ordering.

What Chromebook Plus actually is

Chromebook Plus is a defined tier of Chromebook rather than a separate operating system. Google announced it on October 2, 2023, with a historical launch starting price of $399; that figure describes the launch announcement, not what every model costs today. The category combines ChromeOS with higher baseline hardware and features such as Google apps, selected AI tools, Google Photos Magic Eraser and Photoshop on the web. See Google’s announcement at blog.google/products-and-platforms/devices/chromebooks/chromebook-plus/.

The badge does not make a Chromebook a Windows PC. It tells you that the model meets Google’s current Chromebook Plus eligibility rules. Google lists these baseline requirements:

What a Windows 11 laptop gives you

“Windows laptop” covers a much wider range of hardware and software configurations. Two machines that both run Windows 11 may have very different processors, memory, storage, displays, cooling systems, batteries, ports and prices. Microsoft’s Windows 11 minimum requirements establish whether a device can run the operating system; they do not predict how well a particular laptop will handle video editing, engineering software, games or large spreadsheets.

Check the device against Microsoft’s current Windows 11 system requirements. Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial setup. That requirement is separate from whether you can later use particular applications offline.

Windows also has two different kinds of AI messaging. Cloud-connected AI features in Windows apps are not the same as on-device Copilot+ PC features. Microsoft defines a Copilot+ PC as having a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second. That is a hardware threshold for that class of PC, not a general speed rating for every Windows 11 laptop. Microsoft’s current specifications are at microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/windows-11-specifications.

Chromebook Plus and Windows 11 compared

Decision factor Chromebook Plus Windows 11 laptop
Operating environment ChromeOS with browser, Android, Linux and web-based workflows, subject to app support Windows desktop, web and Microsoft Store applications; configuration varies by model
Published baseline Core i3 12th generation or newer or Ryzen 3 5000 series or newer, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB storage, 1080p webcam with Temporal Noise Reduction and Full HD IPS-or-better display Microsoft’s minimum Windows 11 requirements; those minimums do not describe performance for demanding software
Microsoft 365 Microsoft 365 app can open, edit, download and save Word, Excel and PowerPoint files; extra functionality requires a subscription and feature parity is not guaranteed Can run the Windows desktop editions when the laptop and license support them
Offline work Some activities and files work offline after they are configured; each app has its own limits Many installed desktop programs work without a connection, but cloud services and first-time activation can still require internet
AI hardware Features depend on the specific Chromebook Plus model and ChromeOS services Cloud AI is distinct from Copilot+ features; Copilot+ requires a qualifying NPU, stated by Microsoft as more than 40 trillion operations per second
Updates Automatic-update end date is model-specific Eligibility and support depend on the device, Windows edition and individual software vendors
Category-wide winner No supported evidence establishes a universal advantage in price, performance, security or battery life. Compare exact models and test conditions.

Start with the software you cannot compromise on

Make a list of tasks rather than a list of brand names. Include your employer’s or school’s required programs, file formats, browser extensions, VPN or security client, printer and scanner, external displays, smart-card readers, audio interfaces and any other peripheral that must work on day one.

When Chromebook Plus is a good fit

  • Your main tools are browser services such as webmail, document editors, project-management systems, learning platforms and video meetings.
  • The Android or Linux version of an app is officially supported and provides the functions you actually use.
  • You exchange ordinary Word, Excel and PowerPoint files and do not depend on advanced desktop-only features.
  • Your peripherals have ChromeOS drivers or work through standard, supported protocols.

When Windows is the safer choice

  • You need a Windows-only desktop program, an older line-of-business application or a plug-in that has no ChromeOS equivalent.
  • Your work depends on Office macros, complex add-ins, specialist fonts, advanced formatting, custom templates or other features that must match a desktop installation exactly.
  • A manufacturer supplies only Windows drivers or configuration utilities for a specialist peripheral.
  • Your workflow has not been tested end to end on ChromeOS and a failed experiment would interrupt work or study.

“There is a web version” is not the same as “my workflow is supported.” Open a representative project, export it, print it, share it and reopen it before treating an alternative as acceptable.

Can you use a Chromebook without Wi-Fi?

Yes, for some activities. Google says Chromebooks can be used offline for selected tasks. Offline access is not automatic for every service: configure the individual app, download the files you need and test with Wi-Fi disabled. A document that is visible in a browser is not necessarily stored locally or editable offline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An offline test that takes an hour

  1. While connected, open the files and applications you will need during a trip, class or outage.
  2. Enable each service’s offline setting and allow files to finish syncing or downloading.
  3. Turn off Wi-Fi and disconnect any phone tethering.
  4. Edit a realistic document, create a new file, save it, reopen it and check whether the required export or print option is available.
  5. Reconnect and confirm that changes synchronize without creating duplicate or conflicting copies.

Repeat the test after major app or ChromeOS updates if offline work is business-critical. Windows desktop programs may operate offline too, but cloud storage, license activation, collaboration and security services can impose their own connection requirements.

Can you use Microsoft 365 on a Chromebook?

Google states that Chromebook users can use the Microsoft 365 app to open, edit, download and save Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. Additional Microsoft 365 functionality requires a subscription. Those statements do not promise feature parity with the Windows desktop editions. Google’s FAQ explains the supported approach at google.com/chromebook/frequently-asked-questions.

Check these Office-specific risks

  • Macros and VBA automation
  • Excel add-ins, data connections and specialist analysis tools
  • Complex page layouts, embedded objects, fonts and print settings
  • Tracked changes, document protection and templates used by an organisation
  • PowerPoint animations, fonts, embedded media and presenter workflows
  • File exchange with colleagues who use desktop-only features

Ask your school or employer which features are mandatory, then test an actual file in the exact Chromebook workflow. If a small formatting or automation difference has serious consequences, choose Windows unless the owner of that workflow confirms ChromeOS support.

Compare the exact hardware, not the category label

After software compatibility, compare model-level specifications. Chromebook Plus gives you a published floor, but manufacturers can exceed it. Windows machines can be below, at or far above the hardware needed for your workload.

Specification What to verify Why it matters
Processor Exact CPU model and generation; do not rely on “fast” or “AI” branding Determines application support, sustained performance and efficiency
Memory Installed RAM and whether it can be upgraded Browser tabs, virtual meetings, creative apps and multitasking consume memory
Storage Capacity, type and whether storage is replaceable Controls local files, app installations and recovery options
Display Resolution, panel type, brightness, colour coverage, touch and refresh rate A Full HD panel can still differ substantially in visibility and colour
Webcam and microphones Resolution, low-light performance, noise reduction and privacy shutter Important for meetings and recording; Chromebook Plus specifies a 1080p-or-better webcam with Temporal Noise Reduction
Ports USB-A, USB-C data and charging, display output, audio, card reader and docking support A hub cannot add capabilities the laptop or operating system does not support
Wireless Wi-Fi generation, Bluetooth version and enterprise requirements Affects network reliability and accessory compatibility
Physical design Weight, hinges, keyboard layout, trackpad, fan noise and repairability These determine daily comfort and ownership cost

A USB-C hub or docking station is a conditional accessory. Check the selected laptop’s ports, charging limits and external-display support first; the same hub is not automatically suitable for every Chromebook Plus or Windows model.

Support life and update dates

ChromeOS automatic-update support is tied to the exact Chromebook model. Google publishes the end date in its ChromeOS Auto Update policy. Look up the model number, not merely the manufacturer’s family name, and compare the remaining support period with how long you expect to keep the laptop.

For Windows, verify that the laptop is eligible for Windows 11 and check the support status of every essential application, driver and peripheral. A current operating system cannot make an obsolete vendor driver or discontinued desktop program compatible.

Security: use precise claims

Google’s Chromebook FAQ contains this vendor-authored statement: “As of May 2025 there has been no evidence of any documented, successful virus attack on ChromeOS.” Google attributes it to ChromeOS monitoring of various national and internal databases. The May 2025 date and Google’s attribution matter: it is not a guarantee that a Chromebook cannot be infected, phished, compromised through an account or exposed by an unsafe extension.

Windows security depends on the edition, update state, account practices, installed software and the organisation’s controls. Do not choose either category on a blanket claim that it is immune to threats. Use unique passwords, multifactor authentication, timely updates, reputable extensions and a recovery plan on whichever system you buy.

Battery life and performance: demand comparable evidence

No category-level test establishes that Chromebook Plus is faster, lasts longer or costs less than Windows laptops. Google notes that Chromebook battery life can vary significantly with network conditions, location, settings and usage. Windows results vary for the same reasons, plus processor power limits, display brightness and cooling design.

When battery or performance decides the purchase, compare independent tests of the exact models under similar conditions. Record the test workload, brightness, wireless state, operating-system version and power mode. A manufacturer’s battery estimate or an NPU figure should not be presented as a direct comparison with another category.

Price and total cost

The $399 Chromebook Plus starting price announced by Google in 2023 is historical context, not a current market ranking. Current prices vary by country, retailer, configuration and promotion. Windows pricing has the same variation, with a much wider range of specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calculate the complete cost:

  • Laptop and operating-system edition
  • Required Microsoft 365 or other software subscriptions
  • Cloud storage beyond any included allowance
  • USB-C hub, dock, charger or specialist adapter
  • Replacement battery, repairs and warranty coverage
  • Accessories required for your monitor, printer or other peripherals

Compare like with like in your local market. A lower purchase price is not a saving if it requires subscriptions or accessories you would not otherwise buy.

A decision process that avoids expensive surprises

  1. Write the non-negotiables. Name every required application, file type, peripheral, offline task and external display.
  2. Classify each requirement. Mark it as ChromeOS-supported, web-only, Android/Linux-supported, Windows-only or unverified.
  3. Test the unverified items. Use a trial account or a retailer return period to open real files, complete a representative task, print and export.
  4. Shortlist exact models. Compare CPU, RAM, storage, screen, webcam, ports, wireless, weight and repair options.
  5. Check support dates. Look up the Chromebook model’s automatic-update end date and Windows eligibility and driver support.
  6. Price the whole setup. Include subscriptions, docks, adapters and accessories in the same currency and region.
  7. Buy with a verification plan. Keep installation media or recovery information, test your essential workflow immediately and use the return window if a required task fails.

Which laptop should you buy?

Choose Chromebook Plus when

  • Your daily work is primarily browser-based and you value a simple, managed ChromeOS environment.
  • You have confirmed offline access for travel or outages.
  • Your Office files are straightforward and the Microsoft 365 app meets your needs.
  • The exact model has enough support time, ports and local storage for your planned ownership period.

Choose Windows 11 when

  • A required desktop application, driver, plug-in or peripheral is Windows-only.
  • You need desktop Microsoft 365 features that you cannot validate on ChromeOS.
  • You require a specialised workflow whose compatibility cannot be demonstrated before purchase.
  • You need a particular hardware configuration or software ecosystem that ChromeOS does not provide.

If both platforms pass your software and support checks, let the exact model’s ergonomics, display, ports, repairability, current local price and independently tested battery results decide. The category name alone cannot answer that final choice.
