Yes—you can use a Chromebook without Wi-Fi for offline-ready apps, files stored on the device, and content downloaded in advance. You cannot use live websites or services that require a connection, and cloud files need to be made available offline before you disconnect. Google Chromebook Help puts it simply: “You can use offline-ready apps to keep using a Chromebook when it’s not connected to the Internet.”
What works on a Chromebook without Wi-Fi?
Offline capability depends on the app and on whether the content is stored locally. Documents saved on the Chromebook can be opened without retrieving them from the cloud. Some web apps and Android apps also offer offline features, but installing an app does not guarantee that it will work without a connection.
- Google Drive files: Docs, Sheets, and Slides files can be available offline after you enable Drive offline access and make the files available locally. Edits sync when the Chromebook reconnects.
- Gmail: Gmail Offline can let you read synced messages and compose email. Messages sent while disconnected wait in the Outbox and send after reconnection.
- Google Keep: Notes saved while connected can be viewed and edited offline. Changes appear online after the device reconnects.
- Local files and media: Files already stored on the device can be opened locally. Google also lists photo editing and media playback among possible offline tasks.
- Downloaded reading and video: Google describes offline reading in Play Books and downloading shows or movies through supported app guidance. Offline availability varies by app and title.
- Saved web pages: A page saved as an HTML file can be read offline, though it will not behave like a live website.
For Drive, Google’s offline guidance identifies Google Maps and Google Forms as unsupported in this mode. Google also says YouTube Music for Chromebook does not support offline playback, so do not assume a streaming service will work just because its app is installed.

What to prepare before you lose the connection
Do the setup while you are online, then verify important content before leaving Wi-Fi. Menu labels can vary by app version, but the settings below follow Google’s documented instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Enable Gmail Offline
- In Chrome, open Gmail while connected.
- Open Gmail settings and find the Offline section.
- Enable Gmail Offline, choose how many days of messages to sync, and save changes.
- Do not use Incognito mode for offline Gmail. Messages you compose without a connection remain in the Outbox until reconnection.
Make Drive files available locally
- While connected, open Google Drive and turn on its Offline setting.
- Mark the files or folders you will need as available offline.
- Open the essential files before leaving and confirm they can be accessed without relying on cloud retrieval.
Google says recently opened files may be made available automatically, but verify anything important rather than relying on that behavior. Work made offline syncs to Drive after the Chromebook reconnects.
Prepare Keep, pages, apps, and entertainment
- Keep: Open Google Keep while online and give notes time to save before disconnecting.
- Web pages: Save pages you need as HTML files for offline reading.
- Apps: Install apps while connected and check that the specific app supports the offline task you need. Try the task before you leave.
- Books and video: Download eligible books, shows, or movies in the relevant app while connected. Availability depends on the app and content.
Check for ChromeOS updates
Connect to Wi-Fi and check for ChromeOS updates before a trip or other offline period. Google’s update instructions say updates download when the Chromebook is connected to the internet.

What will not work, or may be limited?
- Live websites and online services: Anything that needs to contact a website or server cannot load new information while the Chromebook is disconnected.
- Cloud-only files: Files not saved or marked available offline may be inaccessible until the connection returns.
- Some apps and modes: Offline features vary by app; some apps or services may not work in Incognito or guest mode.
- Microsoft 365 files: Google’s Office-file guidance says Microsoft 365 files cannot be opened in Microsoft 365 or Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides while offline. A basic offline editor may be offered, but its functionality is limited; do not count on full Office editing.
- Android apps on unsupported or managed devices: Android app support depends on the Chromebook model, and some apps are unavailable on some devices. A school or workplace administrator may also restrict Play Store access or other services.
On a school-managed Chromebook, available apps and settings may be controlled by the school. Google’s school Chromebook guidance explains that restrictions can be set by an administrator.

Offline files and downloads use the Chromebook’s internal storage. Google notes that Chromebook storage is limited and low space can interfere with downloading files, loading web pages, changing settings, and using Android apps. The Downloads folder is temporary, so it is not a safe long-term archive for files you need to keep.

For extra room, a compatible USB thumb drive or external hard drive can carry files. Google lists these as storage options, but they are optional—not a requirement for offline use. Check your Chromebook’s ports and storage compatibility before buying or relying on an external drive.

A Chromebook is a practical offline device if your work can be prepared in advance and the apps you depend on have offline modes. It is a weaker fit if you need continuous access to live services, unsaved cloud files, or full Microsoft 365 editing. Before relying on it away from Wi-Fi, test the exact apps and files you need, confirm that they are stored locally, and leave enough space for downloads.
