For most Chromebooks, turn the device off, hold Refresh, tap Power, and release Refresh when it starts. Google calls this a hardware reset or hard reset. It is different from a Powerwash, which erases local user data. Before you begin, note that a hardware reset might delete some files in Downloads.

Force restart most Chromebooks

  1. Turn off the Chromebook.
  2. Press and hold the Refresh key, then tap Power.
  3. When the Chromebook starts, release Refresh.

This procedure is intended to reset hardware components such as the keyboard and touchpad. It does not reinstall ChromeOS or perform a factory reset. Google notes that it might delete some files in Downloads, so do not assume downloaded files are protected. See Google’s Chromebook hardware reset instructions.

Use the procedure for your device type

Alternate key sequence

Google also documents an alternate sequence for some Chromebooks: hold Back + Refresh + Power for at least 10 seconds.

Some older or model-specific Chromebooks

A few models use a special reset button, disconnection of the power cable, or battery removal and reinsertion. Procedures vary by model; follow the instructions for your exact Chromebook rather than opening the device or trying an unfamiliar method. A paperclip or similar object is relevant only to certain older models with a recessed reset button; it is not needed for the standard key sequence. Check Google’s instructions for hardware-reset variations.

Hardware reset, Powerwash, and recovery are different

These options have different purposes and data consequences. A frozen screen alone is not a reason to treat them as interchangeable.

Option Purpose What it does to data When to use it
Hardware reset Restarts Chromebook hardware using a button sequence. Might delete some files in Downloads, according to Google. When other troubleshooting has failed and you need to restart the device’s hardware. Google hardware reset guidance
Powerwash (factory reset) Resets the Chromebook to address problems such as profile or settings issues. Erases local user data, including Downloads, settings, apps, and files. Google Drive and external storage are not erased by the Chromebook’s factory reset. When a factory reset is appropriate, after backing up local data. Work or school users should contact their administrator first. Google factory reset guidance
ChromeOS recovery Removes and reinstalls ChromeOS. Permanently erases files on the Chromebook’s hard drive. For more serious ChromeOS failures, after trying less invasive troubleshooting and backing up if possible. Google recovery guidance

If the Chromebook still has problems

Check the device after it restarts

If the restart completes but the original issue remains, test the Chromebook. Google’s Diagnostics app, where available, can check categories including battery, CPU, memory, and Wi-Fi. If a test fails or you still suspect a hardware fault, Google’s guidance is to contact the Chromebook manufacturer. Google Diagnostics guidance

Get help before erasing a managed device

If your Chromebook is managed by work or school, contact your administrator before attempting a Powerwash. Administrators may control factory-reset options, and the process erases local user data. Google factory reset guidance
