Chrome may ask for local network access because macOS 15 and later requires your permission before an app can find or communicate with devices and services on your network. Allow it only if you use a trusted feature that needs that connection; otherwise, deny it. You can change the Mac app permission later in System Settings.
There may also be a separate Chrome prompt for a particular website. The two permissions have different scopes and are managed in different places.
What the Mac permission allows
Apple’s Local Network privacy setting controls which apps can find and communicate with devices on your local network. When an app first accesses the network, macOS asks for a choice and records it. Apple introduced this control on Mac with macOS 15. See Apple’s Local Network privacy documentation and the Mac user guide.

If the alert identifies Chrome as the app, it is consistent with this macOS-level permission. The alert means Chrome attempted an operation covered by local-network access; it does not, by itself, identify a particular device or explain which feature prompted the attempt.

Chrome can also ask for a website-specific permission
Chrome has a separate permission for websites. Google’s Chrome Help says Local network access lets a site find and connect to devices on your local network or services on your local device. A website needs permission before making the covered connection. Manage it in Chrome’s site settings, not in the Mac’s app-permission list: Chrome Help: Change site settings permissions.
Chrome’s developer documentation says the site-level prompt launched in Chrome 142. Its initial scope covers qualifying requests from a public website to a local IP address or loopback destination, and from a local website to loopback; the restriction applies to secure contexts. Google describes the goals as reducing cross-site request forgery (CSRF) attacks against routers and other private-network devices and limiting sites’ ability to fingerprint a user’s local network. A dialog naming a website is consistent with Chrome’s site-level permission; one naming Chrome as an app is consistent with macOS’s control. The exact prompt and installed versions matter, so that distinction cannot establish what triggered a particular alert.

Which permission should you change?

Should you allow Chrome or the site?
- Allow if you intentionally use a trusted app feature or website that needs to connect to a device or service on your local network.
- Deny if you do not use a feature that needs the connection, do not recognize the site, or cannot tell why it is asking. You can revisit the Mac app setting later.
- Do not infer a specific target from the prompt alone. The Mac alert concerns an app operation; the Chrome prompt concerns a qualifying website request. Neither cited documentation identifies the particular site or device behind an individual reader’s prompt.
Change the permission later
Change Chrome’s Mac app access
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Go to Privacy & Security > Local Network.
- Switch Chrome on to allow local-network access, or off to deny it. The control is documented in Apple’s Mac user guide.
Change one website’s access in Chrome
- Open the website whose permission you want to change.
- Select View site information beside the address.
- Choose Site settings and adjust the site’s permission. Chrome Help says site-setting changes save automatically: Change site settings permissions.
