There is no evidence-based universal winner. “Chrome Lite” was Chrome’s former Lite mode (a data-saving feature), not a separate lightweight Chrome app. The browsers you can install today report different download sizes, installed footprints and post-use data, and those values change by phone, Android version and release. To find the smallest option for your device, compare the current app listings and then measure Settings > Apps > [browser] > Storage after the same browsing workload.
Google’s current help page lists Android 10 and later as the requirement for Chrome for Android. Firefox Lite is no longer supported, while Google Go’s often-quoted “just over 7MB” figure dates from 2019 and is not a current comparison with Chrome. The practical choice is therefore a current, maintained browser that fits your Android version and your own storage measurement—not an old “lite” label.
What “Chrome Lite” actually was
Google introduced the name Lite mode for Chrome’s former Data Saver feature in April 2019. It reduced data use by requesting optimized versions of some pages; it did not create a second Chrome package with a separate app footprint. The announcement is in the Chromium Blog’s April 2019 post.
That distinction matters when you search for a “Chrome Lite download.” A listing or APK claiming to be a new official Chrome Lite browser is not established by Google’s Lite-mode announcement. Chrome’s current Android product is the regular Chrome app, and Google’s current download help says it works on Android 10 and up.

Storage has three different meanings
People often compare a store number with the number in Android Settings and conclude that one browser is smaller. They may be comparing different measurements. Use the following definitions before making a decision.
| Measurement | What it represents | Why it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Download size | Data transferred from Google Play (or another distribution channel) for a particular build. | Compression, optional components, processor architecture, language resources and the device configuration selected by the store. |
| Installed app size | Space occupied by the app and its installed components after installation. | Android version, device architecture, bundled resources and updates. |
| App data and cache | Profiles, databases, cached pages, thumbnails, downloads, offline content and other files created during use. | Browsing history, media-heavy sites, saved downloads, settings, time since the last cleanup and the browser’s storage design. |
Google Play’s own documentation distinguishes download size from install size and reports figures for a reference device and configuration. Its guidance, “Optimize your app’s size and stay within Google Play app size limits,” explains why a single number copied from a listing is not an apples-to-apples measurement for every phone.
What the available alternatives establish
| Browser or option | What is known | Storage conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome for Android | Current Google support documentation lists Android 10 and later as the requirement. | No authoritative current, cross-device storage figure establishes it as the smallest or largest. |
| Google Go | Google described it as a lighter way to reach information and web versions of apps. A 2019 announcement said “At just over 7MB.” Current Google help says the updated version is available only to Android Go users; legacy versions on devices with less than 2GB of RAM receive no future updates. Incognito mode redirects to Chrome. | The 7MB statement is a historical download-era product claim, not current installed size and not a Chrome comparison. |
| Firefox Lite | Mozilla ended support on June 30, 2021; version 2.6.1 was the last supported release. | Do not select it for current secure browsing or treat its old footprint as a useful modern benchmark. |
| DuckDuckGo Private Browser | DuckDuckGo documents Android distribution through Google Play, F-Droid and APK channels in its Android installation help. | The official page provides no comparable current size figure. |
| Other choice-screen browsers | Android’s browser-options page lists choices including Brave, Firefox, Opera and Samsung Internet in many countries. | Country availability varies, and the list does not rank storage use. |
Google’s August 20, 2019 announcement is the source of the often-repeated Google Go number: “At just over 7MB, Google Go helps make sure your phone stays speedy as you traverse the web.” That sentence describes Google Go at that announcement date. It is not a measurement of a current install, and it was not a controlled comparison against any Chrome release.

Why a universal “smallest browser” claim is unreliable
Store delivery is device-specific
Google Play can deliver different resources to different phones. A listing may show a download estimate while Android later reports a larger installed package. Two devices on the same Android release can also receive different architecture or language resources. Always record the phone model, Android version, browser version and the measurement label shown by the store.

Use changes the result
A newly installed browser has almost no history, cache or downloads. After visiting news sites, streaming pages, social feeds and document-heavy pages, its app-data line can be much larger. A browser with a small package can therefore consume more total space for your particular workload than one with a larger package but less accumulated data.
Features are not footprint guarantees
Privacy controls, an ad blocker, a data-saving mode or a simplified start page may change network traffic or page behavior. None of those features, by itself, proves that the installed app occupies less storage. Treat footprint and feature claims as separate questions.
How to measure browsers fairly on your own Android phone
The following procedure gives you a repeatable answer for your device. It is a measurement plan, not a published benchmark; if you share results, disclose every condition.
- Define the target. Decide whether you care about download size, installed app size, app data and cache, or the sum of all three. Write the target down before installing anything.
- Check compatibility first. Verify your Android version against each browser’s current store listing. Chrome’s documented requirement is Android 10 or later. Do not compare an unsupported legacy build with a maintained release.
- Record the store value. Open the browser’s Google Play listing on the phone being tested and note the displayed download information, date and version. Do not copy a number from a different device, an old article or an APK mirror.
- Install without restoring old data. If the browser was previously used, uninstall it and restart the phone before the comparison, where practical. Restoring a profile or importing a large history makes the starting point unequal.
- Measure the clean install. Open Settings > Apps, select the browser, then open Storage (some manufacturers label it Storage & cache). Record the separate values for app size, user data and cache. Screens and labels vary by Android skin, so preserve the exact labels in your notes.
- Use one fixed workload. Visit the same short list of pages in each browser, sign in to the same services only if necessary, download the same test file, and change the same settings. Keep the number of tabs and the time spent on each page consistent. Avoid streaming an entire film in one browser but not another.
- Measure again under the same conditions. Close the tabs, wait for downloads and page loading to finish, and return to the same Android storage screen. Record app size, data and cache separately rather than reporting only a rounded total.
- Repeat after an update if your question is about long-term use. Browser updates can replace or add components. Note the version and date instead of combining pre-update and post-update figures.
- Report the context. A credible result includes phone model, Android version, browser version, distribution channel, workload, elapsed use time and which storage categories were added together.
How to read the results
If download size is your constraint
Choose the option that your phone’s store currently delivers with the smallest download for your exact configuration, provided it is supported and maintained. A historical number from another release cannot answer this question.

If internal storage after months of use is your constraint
Compare the post-workload app data plus cache and include downloads you intend to keep. Review that figure periodically. A browser’s clean-install number is only a starting point for this decision.
If updates and security are your constraint
Eliminate unsupported software before comparing megabytes. Mozilla says Firefox Lite ended support in 2021, so its final release no longer receives security updates. Google’s information about legacy Google Go versions on devices with less than 2GB of RAM likewise warns that those versions receive no future updates. A small but abandoned package is not a sound storage optimization.
If your phone is below Android 10
Chrome’s current documented requirement may rule it out. Check the current listing for browsers that still support your Android release, and distinguish an actively maintained version from an old APK that merely installs. Android’s choice-screen page is useful for seeing the range of browser options available in your country, but it does not certify compatibility or storage ranking for your phone.

Chrome
Chrome is the reference point in this comparison, but neither Google’s download-help page nor the cited Play documentation supplies a universal installed-size figure. Chrome’s Lite mode was a data-use feature, so enabling or remembering that name does not create a separate, smaller app to install.

Google Go
Google Go may appear in searches for “lightweight Chrome” because Google described it as a lighter way to access information and web versions of apps. Its “just over 7MB” wording belongs to August 2019. Google’s current help page says the updated Google Go is only available for Android Go users, and its incognito mode redirects to Chrome. Check both facts against your phone and intended use before treating it as a replacement.
Firefox Lite
Mozilla’s support notice, last updated August 4, 2024, records June 30, 2021 as the end of support and identifies version 2.6.1 as the last supported release. The notice points readers toward supported Firefox for Android and Firefox Focus options, but no common current storage measurements for those apps are established here. Do not install Firefox Lite solely because an old listing or article calls it small.
DuckDuckGo Private Browser
DuckDuckGo provides official Android installation routes through Google Play, F-Droid and an APK. Those routes confirm availability, not a storage advantage. Measure the package and its data on your phone using the same procedure as Chrome.
Browsers shown by Android’s choice screen
The country-specific list can help you discover maintained alternatives such as Brave, Firefox, Opera or Samsung Internet. It is a choice list, not a performance or storage ranking. Check the browser’s own current listing and support policy before installing.

Reducing storage without changing browsers
If your current browser is otherwise suitable, first control accumulated data rather than switching on the basis of an old size claim.
- In Settings > Apps > [browser] > Storage, inspect whether user data, cache or downloads is the largest category.
- Remove downloads you no longer need from the browser’s download manager or the Android Files app. Keep files you need offline somewhere else before deleting them.
- Clear cache only when you understand the trade-off: cached page resources can be downloaded again, and the first visit afterward may use more data. The exact button wording differs by Android version.
- Review offline reading lists, saved media and automatic-download settings inside the browser.
- Do not tap Clear storage or Clear data casually. That normally resets the app and can remove local settings, accounts, history or downloaded content; confirm what your Android build says before proceeding.
A practical decision framework
- Remove retired choices. Exclude Firefox Lite and any Google Go build that no longer receives updates for your device.
- Filter by Android version. Keep only browsers whose current release supports your phone. Chrome’s documented floor is Android 10.
- Choose the storage metric. For a limited data plan, prioritize download size; for a nearly full phone, prioritize post-use app data and cache.
- Measure at equal starting points. Use the same phone, clean install, pages, downloads and elapsed time.
- Balance maintenance and behavior. Prefer a maintained browser that performs the tasks you need, then manage downloads and cache. Do not trade security support for a historical megabyte figure.
What can and cannot be concluded today
The available official information confirms that Chrome Lite was a feature, Firefox Lite is retired, Chrome currently targets Android 10 and later, Google Go’s 7MB statement is historical, and several current alternatives exist. It does not provide a current, apples-to-apples storage table for Chrome, Google Go, DuckDuckGo, Firefox, Brave, Opera or Samsung Internet on one phone. Consequently, naming one browser as the universal smallest would overstate the evidence. Your device-level measurement is the answer to the literal “which uses less storage?” question.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Do not hunt for an official “Chrome Lite” app or rely on Google Go’s 2019 7MB claim. Install a currently supported browser for your Android version, measure app size and app data separately in Android Settings, and repeat the comparison after the same browsing workload. That is the only reliable way to identify the lower-storage choice on your phone.
