On a Windows PC, press Ctrl+Shift+T; on a Mac, press Command+Shift+T. Chrome’s built-in shortcut can reopen tabs from before a crash. If it does not bring back the pages you need, check Recently closed in History and confirm you are in the right Chrome profile. Recovery is not guaranteed when Chrome no longer has the previous session available.
1. Reopen tabs with Chrome’s keyboard shortcut
Use the shortcut for your computer:
- Windows: Ctrl+Shift+T
- Mac: Command+Shift+T
Google lists these shortcuts as a way to reopen tabs that were open before Chrome crashed. If you get only one tab or window back, try the shortcut again. That repeated-use tip comes from Google Help Community advice, not an official guarantee that every tab will return.
2. Look in History for recently closed pages
Open Chrome’s History and look for recently closed tabs or windows. Reopen the pages you need rather than assuming History contains a complete copy of the lost session. This is a community-recommended check, not a guaranteed session archive.
3. Make sure Chrome opened the right profile
Click Chrome’s profile control and check that the active profile is the one you used before the crash. Different profiles can show different browsing contexts, so tabs may appear missing if Chrome opened another profile. This is a low-risk troubleshooting check suggested by Google Help Community responders; it does not guarantee recovery.

4. Check for tabs from other devices
If you were signed in and sync was enabled, look in History for tabs from other devices. Whether those tabs appear depends on your sign-in and sync state. This community suggestion may help you find pages you visited elsewhere, but it does not establish that Chrome can restore the crashed computer’s local session.
5. Set Chrome to reopen pages next time
On desktop, go to Settings → On startup and select Continue where you left off. Google describes this preference as reopening the same pages that were open when Chrome was closed. It affects future launches; it cannot repair session data that has already disappeared.

Chromebook: use ChromeOS session restore
Chromebook has a separate restore flow, so do not use the desktop menu path above. Google documents three choices in Chromebook startup settings: Ask every time, Always restore, and Off. After restarting and signing in, choose to open the previous session if prompted, or select Always restore to make restoration automatic.

If restoring the session causes another crash
A very large set of tabs may make it difficult to get Chrome open. A Google Help Community reply recommends checking History and reopening only selected pages instead of immediately restoring everything. Google’s official crash guidance also recommends reducing memory pressure by closing tabs, apps, downloads, and extensions you do not need.

When the tabs cannot be recovered
The shortcut and startup preference are documented recovery options, but Google does not promise that every crashed session remains available. If the shortcut, History, and profile checks do not show the pages, the cited guidance does not establish whether local session files can recover them. Avoid changing Chrome’s profile or session files based only on community snippets.
The cited instructions cover desktop Chrome and Chromebook. They do not establish an equivalent recovery procedure for Android or iOS, so desktop keyboard shortcuts should not be treated as mobile instructions.
