For most individuals, Chrome Remote Desktop is the easiest safe starting point. Choose RustDesk when open-source software, self-hosting, or broad cross-platform coverage matters more than minimal setup. Choose Windows Remote Desktop (RDP) for a Windows-managed environment where native administration and device redirection justify the networking work. None is universally safest: the right choice depends on who connects, which operating systems you control, and whether you can enforce strong network and account protections.
The three tools use different network models
Comparing feature checklists without understanding the connection path can lead to a dangerous setup. Chrome Remote Desktop and RustDesk are designed to broker connections through an internet service or relay infrastructure. RDP is a Windows protocol that normally expects direct reachability through a local network, VPN, gateway, or carefully designed forwarding.
Chrome Remote Desktop: a managed internet service
Google provides the rendezvous and connection service. You install a host on the computer you want to reach, register it at remotedesktop.google.com/access, and connect from a browser or mobile app with a PIN. The service requires internet connectivity. Google lists outbound UDP, inbound UDP responses, TCP 443, and TCP/UDP 3478 for STUN among traffic that may need to be allowed. A work or school administrator can restrict use on a managed account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

RustDesk: brokered connections with an optional private backend
RustDesk clients attempt peer-to-peer connections and use relays when a direct path is unavailable. You can use a public service or deploy your own backend. The open-source server uses the hbbs rendezvous role and hbbr relay role. Self-hosting moves those services onto infrastructure you manage; it does not remove the need to expose, restrict, monitor, and patch the required server endpoints.

Windows RDP: a protocol that needs network design
RDP is built into Windows. An enabled host listens for inbound TCP 3389 connections. Inside a controlled LAN, that can be straightforward. From the internet, use a VPN or Remote Desktop Gateway with Network Level Authentication (NLA). Do not publish an unprotected RDP listener directly to the public internet.
What each option supports
| Option | Host coverage documented by the vendor | Client coverage and notable features | Administration and exposure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome Remote Desktop | Windows, macOS, and Linux | Browser and mobile access; unattended access uses a PIN; ad-hoc support uses a one-time code | Lightest personal setup; Google-managed service; internet required |
| RustDesk | Windows, macOS, and Linux hosts; the product also documents Android, iOS, and Web support | Multiple codecs; Windows can run without an administrative installation, with elevation when a task requires it | Open source; peer-to-peer with relay fallback; optional self-hosting |
| Windows RDP | Windows-edition and deployment dependent | Clients for Windows, macOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android, Chrome OS, and web browsers; capabilities vary by client | Strong Windows integration; remote internet access normally requires a VPN, gateway, or forwarding design |
The RDP client matrix is not a promise of feature parity. Microsoft documents the Windows MSTSC client with external and multiple-monitor support, clipboard transfer, USB redirection, and serial redirection. Browser, mobile, and other clients expose different subsets, so verify the exact client before depending on a peripheral.

Security: encryption is only one layer
Session protection
Google states that all Chrome Remote Desktop sessions are fully encrypted. RustDesk documents end-to-end encryption based on NaCl and publishes client and server code. RDP is a proprietary protocol; its practical safety depends heavily on authentication, NLA, certificate and gateway configuration, patching, and the network boundary around the host.
Identity and authorization
A strong encrypted channel does not prevent an attacker who obtains your account, PIN, device credentials, or support code. Use a unique account password with multi-factor authentication where available, give remote users only the privileges they need, and remove old registered devices and unattended-access entries.

Endpoint and server exposure
Chrome Remote Desktop avoids asking you to open a public 3389 listener, but it still depends on an internet service and your Google account. RustDesk self-hosting gives you control over IDs and relays while making you responsible for firewall rules, updates, logs, backups, and administrator access. RDP should remain inside a private network or behind a VPN or RD Gateway; router port forwarding is a last-resort network design, not a security feature.
Setting up Chrome Remote Desktop for personal access
- On the computer you will access, open remotedesktop.google.com/access and install the host component for Windows, macOS, or Linux.
- Register the computer and create a long, unique PIN. Do not reuse a password from another service.
- Install or open the client on the device you will use remotely, sign in to the same authorized account, select the registered computer, and enter the PIN.
- Test from a different network, such as cellular data, before relying on the connection. If it fails, check outbound firewall rules and the UDP, TCP 443, and STUN traffic Google identifies.
Providing one-time help
For ad-hoc support, the person at the host computer generates a one-time code and approves the connection. Google says the code works once and requests confirmation every 30 minutes. Use this mode instead of leaving unattended access enabled on someone else’s computer, then end the session and remove any temporary authorization.

Setting up RustDesk
- Install the RustDesk client on the host and connecting device, choosing the package for each operating system.
- Exchange the host’s ID and one-time password through a trusted channel. Confirm the device name and the person receiving access before accepting.
- For a private deployment, install RustDesk Server OSS with the
hbbsandhbbrservices, configure firewall rules, and point clients at that server. Treat the server as production infrastructure: restrict management access, apply updates, monitor logs, and protect its keys and backups. - If you need centralized identity and policy, evaluate Server Pro. Its documented additions include a web console, API, OIDC, LDAP, two-factor authentication, device management, access control, and multi-relay management.
Self-hosting is most valuable when your organization needs control over rendezvous and relay traffic or must keep the service on its own infrastructure. It is not a zero-maintenance alternative to a hosted service.
Recommended Free Tools
Using Windows RDP without exposing your PC
- Confirm that the Windows edition and organizational policy support incoming Remote Desktop hosting. Client availability on another platform does not mean every Windows edition can act as a host.
- Enable Remote Desktop only on the intended computer, require NLA, and restrict the allowed users to a dedicated group with least-privilege accounts.
- For off-site access, connect through a properly configured VPN or publish the host through an RD Gateway. Keep the RDP service off the public internet rather than forwarding TCP 3389 straight from the router.
- On Windows MSTSC, select only the redirection features you need. Disable clipboard, USB, drive, printer, or serial redirection when the task does not require them.
- Patch Windows and the client, review authentication and gateway logs, and disable Remote Desktop when the use case ends.
Which one fits your situation?
- Personal access to your own computer: Start with Chrome Remote Desktop when you want the shortest path from installation to a browser or phone connection.
- Family or occasional support: Chrome Remote Desktop’s one-time approval code limits the duration of access better than leaving a permanent account enabled.
- Mixed Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android environment: RustDesk offers the broadest documented combination of client platforms and can be self-hosted if you need control of the backend.
- Open-source or private infrastructure requirement: RustDesk is the natural fit, provided you have the staff and process to operate
hbbs, hbbr, firewalls, updates, and monitoring. - Windows administration with monitors and peripherals: RDP is the strongest candidate when you already operate a VPN or RD Gateway and need Windows-native policy and MSTSC redirection features.
- Windows Home or an unmanaged home router: Do not assume RDP hosting is available or safe. Verify the edition first; if it lacks the host capability or you cannot provide a private network path, use a brokered option instead.
Hardening checklist before trusting any remote session
- Use multi-factor authentication on the controlling account whenever the service supports it.
- Choose unique, high-entropy PINs and passwords; never send credentials in a public chat or email thread.
- Keep host and client software, Windows, browsers, and RustDesk servers current.
- Grant standard-user access by default and elevate only for a task that requires it.
- Test lock-screen behavior, sleep settings, reboot recovery, and local consent before you are away from the computer.
- Review registered devices, saved credentials, server accounts, and gateway logs regularly.
- For RDP, require NLA and a VPN or RD Gateway; for self-hosted RustDesk, firewall and monitor every server role.
Microsoft’s client documentation was last updated February 26, 2025, and RustDesk’s comparison article was published June 29, 2026. Neither date changes the architectural choice: use the simplest brokered service that meets your trust requirements, or accept the operational burden of self-hosting and Windows network administration when those controls are the reason you need them.
