Chrome Remote Desktop works best when you choose the right of its two workflows: set up remote access to reach your own computer later, or use remote support when someone needs to approve a one-time help session. Chrome gives you a web page to start from, but it does not mean the remote-access host is already installed; Google’s setup requires downloading and installing that component.
Which Chrome Remote Desktop workflow should you use?
If you want to open your home computer’s files or applications while you are away, configure ongoing remote access on that computer and connect with its PIN. If you are helping another person once, use remote support: the host creates a single-use code and approves the helper.

Google documents using a computer or mobile device to access another computer. The computer interface is web-based; mobile remote access uses the app. Google lists Mac, Windows, and Linux as supported host systems in its access instructions. See Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop help.

Set up access to your own computer
Do this on the computer you want to reach later. It must be online and available when you connect.

- Open Chrome on the host computer and go to remotedesktop.google.com/access.
- Choose the setup option and follow the page’s instructions to download and install the Chrome Remote Desktop host component.
- Complete any prompts from the computer, such as entering its password or changing a security setting.
- Choose a PIN when prompted and finish setup. Keep the PIN private.
- When you want to connect, open the access page from your client device, select the host computer from the list, and enter its PIN.
Installing the host component is part of setup; having Chrome alone does not make a computer ready for remote access. Google’s instructions include Linux hosts, with optional virtual-desktop configuration for advanced Linux setups.
Use a one-time code to help someone
Use this flow when the person at the host can participate and approve the session. A support code is not the way to configure unattended access to your own computer.

- On the host, open remotedesktop.google.com/support and install the host component if prompted.
- Generate a support code and send it only to the intended helper.
- The helper uses the code to request access. The host checks the helper’s displayed email address and selects Share to approve.
- When the task is complete, stop sharing or disconnect.
Treat approval as meaningful: Google says a support helper has full access to the host’s apps, files, email, documents, and history while sharing is active. Only share with someone you trust, and end the session as soon as help is finished. Google also says the host is prompted to confirm continued sharing every 30 minutes.

End a session or remove a computer from access
- End a current connection: Close the browser tab or choose Disconnect.
- Stop a support session: Stop sharing on the host when the helper is done.
- Revoke ongoing access: On the access page, use Disable remote connections for the listed computer.
Google states that “all remote desktop sessions are fully encrypted.” This is Google’s statement about session encryption; it does not reduce the access a support helper receives after the host approves sharing. See Google’s help page for connection and access controls.

What to check if a connection fails
Start with the simplest causes, then check whether a network or administrator policy is blocking the service.
- Confirm that both devices have internet access and that the host computer is on.
- Check whether antivirus or firewall software is blocking Chrome Remote Desktop.
- On a work or school network, ask the network administrator whether remote connections are allowed. Google lists outbound UDP, inbound UDP responses, TCP 443, and TCP/UDP 3478 (STUN) as traffic that may need to be allowed.
- Update Chrome or ChromeOS to the latest version, as Google advises.
- If the account or device is managed by an organization, its administrator may control whether the feature is available. Contact that administrator rather than trying to bypass a restriction. Google documents administrator controls in its Chrome Remote Desktop policy guidance.
Availability can also depend on software version and network rules, so a working setup on one network does not guarantee that it will connect from every location.

Privacy on managed devices
Google’s enterprise documentation describes Chrome Remote Desktop as an Optional Service in managed ChromeOS and enterprise contexts and lists data categories that can include remote-session authentication, software setup and inventory, operating-system setup and inventory, and product or service usage. Those statements concern the managed-device contexts described by Google; they should not be read as a description of every consumer configuration.
