Control website alerts in Chrome for Android from More (⋮) > Settings > Site settings > Notifications. The switch at the top changes notification access for all sites. To change only one site, open it, tap Page info beside the address bar, choose Permissions, and set Notifications. Chrome’s notification permission is separate from its pop-up setting and from Android’s phone-level notification controls.

Choose the control that matches what you want

Chrome provides three different ways to reduce or allow website alerts. The right choice depends on whether you want a complete block, a site-specific exception, or fewer permission prompts.

Choice What it changes Use it when
Turn notifications off for all sites Disables website notification access through Chrome’s global notification switch. You do not want any Chrome website alerts on the Android device.
Change one site’s permission Allows or blocks notifications for the site you are viewing without changing other sites’ permissions. One site is noisy, or you want alerts from one trusted site while leaving other sites alone.
Use quieter messaging Lets sites ask for notification permission, but suppresses Chrome’s interruptive pop-up; the request appears as a message under the address bar. You want to avoid disruptive prompts but still want a site to be able to request permission.

These options are not interchangeable. Quieter messaging does not turn notifications off, and changing pop-up behavior does not revoke a notification permission that you already granted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also helps to separate three layers of control:

  • Chrome’s global site setting decides whether websites can use Chrome’s notification permission system.
  • A site-specific permission decides what one website may do, without changing other sites’ permissions.
  • Android’s app notification setting decides whether the phone displays alerts generated by the Chrome app.

An alert can therefore fail at more than one point. For example, a site may be allowed in Chrome while Android has muted Chrome, or Chrome may be allowed generally while the individual site is blocked.

Turn Chrome notifications on or off for every website

Use Chrome’s global site-setting switch when the decision should apply to all websites in Chrome on this Android phone or tablet.

  1. Open Chrome on the Android device.
  2. Tap More, shown as the three-dot menu beside the address bar.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Site settings.
  5. Tap Notifications.
  6. Use the switch at the top to turn website notifications on or off.

Turning the switch off is a blanket control for Chrome website notifications. It is different from silencing Chrome in Android’s system settings: the Chrome setting governs website notification permission, while Android’s controls govern whether the phone displays alerts from the Chrome app.

Use the global switch when you want a clean break from browser alerts, when you are configuring a child’s device, or when repeated permission requests are more trouble than they are worth. Remember that this is broader than blocking one sender: it affects every website using Chrome’s notification feature on that device.

If you want fewer prompts instead of a complete block

Open the same Site settings > Notifications area and use Use quieter messaging when that option is available. Sites can still request permission, but Chrome does not show the large interruptive prompt. Instead, the request appears under the address bar as a message. You can then decide for a particular site when you are ready to respond.

Quieter messaging is useful if you occasionally want website alerts but do not want a page to interrupt what you are reading. It does not automatically approve a request, and it does not remove permissions that you have already granted. If one site is already sending alerts, change that site’s permission separately.

Allow or block notifications for one website

A site-specific permission is useful when most websites are fine but one site should be stopped, or when you want alerts from a particular site without opening notifications for every site.

  1. Open the website in Chrome.
  2. Tap Page info to the left of the address bar. This is the site-information control for the page you are viewing.
  3. Tap Permissions.
  4. Find the notification setting and choose the permission you want.

The available choices depend on the site’s current state and Chrome’s handling of it. If an allow or block control is shown, select the setting that matches your intention. Changing this permission affects the site you are viewing rather than every website in Chrome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If tapping the control does not open a menu, Google says the permissions are still using their original settings. In that case, there may be no site-specific override to change from that screen. A missing menu is not proof that the phone is malfunctioning; it can simply mean that Chrome has no custom permission to display there.

When Chrome shows “Notifications blocked”

Chrome can block notifications from a site after identifying disruptive behavior. Revisit the site and look for the Notifications blocked message. If Chrome offers an option to re-enable permission there, use it only if you trust the site and want its alerts again.

Do not treat the message as the same thing as Android’s app-level block. It describes Chrome’s treatment of that website. If you do not see an option to allow the site, Chrome may still consider its behavior disruptive or the current page may not be offering a notification request.

What to do when notifications do not appear

Work from the website outward. First confirm that Chrome has permission for the specific site, then check whether Android is allowed to display alerts from Chrome.

1. Verify the site’s Chrome permission

  1. Visit the site that should send an alert.
  2. Tap Page info beside the address bar.
  3. Tap Permissions.
  4. Open Notifications.
  5. Select Allow when that control is available.

Also confirm that the global switch under Settings > Site settings > Notifications has not been turned off. A site-level setting cannot produce alerts if the browser-wide notification setting is disabled.

If the site is blocked, changing the site permission is more targeted than changing the global switch. If Chrome has displayed a Notifications blocked message, use that message to re-enable the permission when Chrome provides the option.

2. Check Android’s phone-level notification controls

A site can be allowed in Chrome while Android prevents Chrome alerts from appearing. Open the device’s Android settings for app notifications and inspect the controls for Chrome. Android Help notes that the exact settings and menu labels vary by phone, Android version, and manufacturer, so the path is not identical on every device. Look for the system control that allows notifications from the Chrome app and make sure it is not disabled.

Because manufacturers rearrange settings, do not assume that instructions for one phone model will match another. Search the Android Settings app for Chrome or notifications if the relevant control is not immediately visible. The important check is the Chrome app’s ability to display notifications, not a particular universal menu name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check whether you are browsing privately

Google Chrome Help states: “If you browse privately, you won’t get notifications.” A missing alert while using a private browsing window therefore does not necessarily indicate a broken site permission or a phone setting. Test the site in a regular Chrome tab when you need website notifications.

4. Check whether Chrome removed the permission

If a site used to notify you and suddenly stopped, Chrome may have removed its permission because you had not visited it for a while, or because Chrome identified the site as disruptive. Revisit the site, look for a permission message, and review removed permissions through Safety Check. Grant the permission again only when Chrome makes that option available and you trust the site.

Stop alerts that continue after you disable pop-ups

Pop-ups and website notifications are separate Chrome settings. Blocking one does not automatically block the other.

Pop-ups and redirects

  1. In Chrome, tap More (⋮).
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Site settings.
  4. Tap Pop-ups and redirects.
  5. Change the pop-up setting as needed.

Website notifications

A site subscription can continue sending notifications after pop-ups are disabled. To stop those alerts, change the notification permission separately: open the site, tap Page info > Permissions, and block its notifications, or turn off Chrome’s global notification switch if you want to stop alerts from every site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction explains why disabling pop-ups may appear to have no effect on alerts arriving in the notification shade. The alert is being delivered through the site-notification permission, not through a pop-up window. Conversely, blocking notifications will not necessarily stop every pop-up or redirect; those have their own setting.

Understand Chrome’s automatic permission changes

Chrome may remove a site’s notification permission when the site has not been visited for a while. Chrome may also block notifications from sites it considers disruptive. It can notify you when this happens.

Restore a permission after Chrome removes it

  1. Visit the site again in Chrome.
  2. Look for a notification or permission message on the page.
  3. Use the available control to grant notification permission again, if Chrome offers it.

You can also review removed permissions through Chrome’s Safety Check. The exact presentation can vary with Chrome and Android versions, but Safety Check is the place Chrome identifies for reviewing permissions it has removed.

Revisiting a site does not guarantee that Chrome will offer permission again: a site may still be blocked for disruptive behavior, or the notification control may not be available in the site’s current state. If the site remains blocked, consider whether the alerts are worth overriding Chrome’s protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle spam or deceptive notification prompts

Some website notifications imitate system warnings, delivery notices, security messages, or other urgent alerts. If an alert appears deceptive or unwanted, Chrome may present actions such as Unsubscribe or Show notification. Choose Unsubscribe to block that site’s notifications. If Chrome offers reporting after you unsubscribe, use the report-spam action to identify the alert.

If a notification was incorrectly treated as spam, choose Show notification and then use the option to mark it safe when offered. Google says that reporting spam sends the notification content and the site’s URL to Google to improve spam protection. Marking a notification safe sends details to Google to improve identification. Those data-sharing details apply specifically when you use the report-spam or mark-safe actions.

Do not confuse Show notification with granting every future request from the site. It controls the alert in that Chrome flow; review the site’s permission separately if you want a lasting allow or block decision.

A practical decision path

Block every website

Use More > Settings > Site settings > Notifications, then turn off the switch at the top. This is the fastest choice when no website should request or deliver notifications through Chrome.

Block one noisy website

Open the noisy site, then use Page info > Permissions > Notifications and block it. Other sites’ permissions remain unchanged. This is preferable to a global block if you still rely on alerts from a calendar, news, shopping, or other trusted site.

Keep alerts but remove disruptive prompts

Enable Use quieter messaging in Chrome’s notification site settings. Chrome still permits requests, but places them under the address bar instead of interrupting the page with a prominent prompt. You retain the ability to decide site by site.

Allow one trusted site while keeping the global setting restricted

Open the trusted site and use Page info > Permissions to select the available notification permission. If Chrome has blocked the site for disruptive behavior, first revisit it and respond to the Notifications blocked message if an allow option is offered. If no option appears, Chrome has not made an override available in that state.

Silence Chrome at the phone level

Use Android’s app notification controls when you want Chrome alerts hidden regardless of which website generated them. This is a different decision from changing Chrome’s site permissions. Turning Android notifications back on will not automatically grant a website permission that was blocked in Chrome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why a setting may look different on your device

Chrome’s labels and Android’s system menus can change across app and operating-system versions. Phone manufacturers can also rename or rearrange Android’s notification controls. The Chrome path for site permissions remains the relevant starting point, but the Android path for app-level notification controls is not universal.

If a menu item is missing, confirm that you are in Chrome’s Site settings rather than Android’s general app settings. For a single website, start from the page itself and use Page info; a global Chrome setting will not show the same site-specific controls.

On a tablet, the same Chrome concepts apply, although the address-bar placement and spacing can differ. Look for the three-dot More menu and the site-information control beside the address bar rather than relying on a screenshot from another device.

Quick troubleshooting checklist

  • No sites can notify: Check the top switch under Settings > Site settings > Notifications.
  • Only one site fails: Visit it and inspect Page info > Permissions > Notifications.
  • The site is allowed but alerts are invisible: Review Android’s phone-level notification controls for Chrome; labels vary by manufacturer.
  • Alerts continue after pop-ups were blocked: Block the site’s notification permission separately; pop-ups and notifications are independent.
  • A permission disappeared: Revisit the site and review removed permissions in Safety Check.
  • You are in private browsing: Google Chrome Help says private browsing does not deliver notifications.
  • A prompt is too disruptive: Use quieter messaging rather than disabling every site.
  • Chrome says notifications are blocked: Revisit the site and use the message’s allow control only if Chrome offers it and you trust the site.
  • An alert looks like spam: Use Unsubscribe; report spam only when you want to send the notification content and site URL to Google for spam-protection improvement.
  • The Android menu does not match a guide: Look for Chrome under the device’s app-notification settings; manufacturer and Android-version labels vary.

Does turning off pop-ups stop website notifications?

No. Pop-ups and notifications use separate Chrome settings. Disable the site’s notification permission through Page info > Permissions, or turn off the global notification switch.

What does Use quieter messaging do?

It suppresses Chrome’s large, interruptive permission prompt. A site can still ask, but its request appears as a message under the address bar. It is not a global notification block.

Why are notifications allowed in Chrome but missing from my phone?

Android may be preventing the Chrome app from displaying notifications. Check the phone’s app-notification controls for Chrome. The exact menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Chrome send notifications while I browse privately?

Google Chrome Help states: “If you browse privately, you won’t get notifications.” Use a regular Chrome tab when you need website alerts.

Why did Chrome remove a website’s notification permission?

Chrome may remove permission when a site has not been visited for a while, and it may block sites it considers disruptive. Revisit the site and review removed permissions in Safety Check.

How can I restore a site Chrome marked “Notifications blocked”?

Revisit the site and look for the Notifications blocked message. If Chrome provides an allow control, use it only when you trust the site and want its alerts. An override may not be available for every site.

What happens when I report a Chrome notification as spam?

Google says the notification content and the site’s URL are sent to Google to improve spam protection when you use the report-spam action. Marking a notification safe sends details to Google to improve identification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I find the same Android notification menu shown in a guide?

Android notification labels and paths differ by phone manufacturer and Android version. Search the device’s Settings app for Chrome or app notifications and inspect Chrome’s notification control.

The Bottom Line

For every website, use More > Settings > Site settings > Notifications and switch notifications on or off. For one site, use Page info > Permissions > Notifications. Choose Use quieter messaging when you want fewer permission interruptions rather than a full block. If alerts still do not appear, check Android’s Chrome notification control and remember that private browsing does not deliver notifications. Pop-ups are a separate setting, and Chrome may remove permissions for inactive or disruptive sites.
