Chrome AI Skills are saved prompts inside Gemini in Chrome, not browser extensions. When you run one, Gemini interprets the page you have open (or another tab you select) and follows the Skill’s instructions. Google says Skills use the same safeguards as Gemini in Chrome and request confirmation before certain actions, such as adding a calendar event or sending an email. However, the published Skills documentation does not define a complete permission list, retention period, human-review policy, or model-training policy. Treat Skills as page-aware prompts, review every confirmation, and check Gemini’s broader settings separately.

What Chrome AI Skills are

A Skill is a reusable prompt saved in Gemini in Chrome. Instead of typing the same instruction each time, you save it from Gemini chat history or create one yourself, then invoke it from the Gemini side panel with the / command or the plus button. You can edit saved Skills and add or customize ready-to-use Skills from Google’s library.

Skills are built into Gemini in Chrome. They are not a separate extension, desktop application, or hardware product, and installing a Skill does not create a second browser add-on with its own independent interface.

The Skill supplies instructions; the page supplies the material those instructions operate on. For example, a saved “extract the key deadlines” prompt can interpret an article or document currently open in Chrome. The exact page elements and content types included in every run are not described in the available Help documentation, so do not assume that every embedded frame, hidden field, or browser state is included.

Google’s April 14, 2026 launch announcement also says users can select other tabs. In practical terms, the tab you choose becomes the page context for that invocation. A Skill is therefore not automatically a view of every tab in your window simply because it is installed.

What a Skill can see

The active page is the documented context

Chrome Help describes Skills as reading the content on the active tab and applying the saved instructions. If a page contains confidential text, account details, private messages, or customer data, that material may be interpreted when you run a Skill on that page. The documentation does not provide a field-by-field inventory of what is collected from a page, so the safe assumption is that anything visible as page content could be relevant to the prompt.

Choosing another tab

The launch announcement says you can select other tabs. Before running a Skill, look at the tab or page indicated in the Gemini side panel. Do not rely on the Skill name alone: a prompt intended for a public article could produce a very different result if it is run while a private account page is selected.

What Skills do not automatically imply

The fact that a Skill reads a page does not establish that it can freely inspect your entire browsing history, every open tab, local files, or websites where you are signed in. Those broader capabilities belong to other Gemini in Chrome controls, especially auto-browse, and should not be attributed to an ordinary saved Skill without feature-specific documentation.

Do Skills need permission to use tabs or take actions?

Reading a page versus performing an action

Reading the selected page is the core behavior documented for Skills. Action-taking is different. Google’s launch announcement says Skills use “the same safeguards we apply to prompts in Gemini in Chrome.” It adds: “That means a Skills prompt will ask for confirmation before taking certain actions, such as adding an event to your calendar or sending an email.” Those are examples, not an exhaustive list of every operation that requires confirmation.

A confirmation prompt is an opportunity to inspect what Gemini proposes before it changes data or communicates externally. Read the destination, recipients, event details, and message text rather than approving automatically. The published statement does not promise that confirmation is required for every consequential operation, nor does it publish a complete action matrix.

Broader Gemini in Chrome controls

Gemini in Chrome exposes settings for precise location, microphone access, sharing the current tab by default, and allowing Gemini to browse for you. These are Gemini-level controls. The reviewed Skills documentation does not map each setting to every Skill, so they should not be presented as mandatory permissions for all saved prompts.

Control What it governs How to interpret it for Skills
Precise location Whether Gemini in Chrome can use precise location information The Skills pages do not say that every Skill requires it.
Microphone Whether Gemini in Chrome can use microphone input A page-reading Skill is not documented as needing microphone access.
Share current tab by default Whether the current tab is shared with Gemini by default Review this setting if you do not want automatic tab sharing.
Allow Gemini to browse Whether Gemini may browse on your behalf This is broader and more agentic than the basic saved-prompt behavior.

Settings labels and locations can change as Chrome rolls out the feature. Use the controls shown in your current Gemini in Chrome panel and account settings, and turn off capabilities you do not need.

Skills and auto-browse are not the same thing

Auto-browse is a separate Gemini in Chrome capability designed to complete tasks across websites. Chrome’s auto-browse documentation says it can access local browsing state, including sites where you are signed in, and may share personal information with websites while completing a task. It also describes confirmations for certain actions and a “Take over task” handoff for some tasks.

Question Saved Skill Auto-browse
What starts the behavior? You invoke a saved or customized prompt from the Gemini side panel. You allow Gemini to browse and ask it to complete a task.
Primary context The active page, with the launch announcement also allowing a user-selected tab. Local browsing state and websites needed to complete the task.
Can signed-in sites be involved? The Skills documentation does not establish broad access to all signed-in sites. The auto-browse documentation says signed-in sites may be accessed.
User control during a task Google cites confirmation before certain actions, including calendar events and email. Documentation describes confirmations and a “Take over task” handoff for some tasks.

Do not use auto-browse guidance as proof of what every Skill can do. Conversely, do not assume that a page-focused Skill has the same website reach as auto-browse.

What Google has and has not documented about privacy

Published safeguard statement

In the April 14, 2026 announcement, Hafsah Ismail, Product Manager, Chrome, wrote: “Skills are built on Chrome’s foundation of security and privacy, and they utilize the same safeguards we apply to prompts in Gemini in Chrome.” This describes Google’s stated safeguard approach, but it is not a detailed technical specification of data flows for every Skill.

Questions the Skills pages do not settle

The Skills announcement and Help page do not specify a Skills-specific retention period. They also do not say whether Skill interactions receive human review or whether Skill prompts and page content are used to train models. Do not substitute enterprise or managed-account privacy terms for consumer-account answers; those terms apply to a different account context.

For current treatment of your account data, consult the applicable Gemini privacy notice and the controls available in your Google Account. If a retention, review, or training question is critical to your use case, the responsible answer is that the Skills documentation does not establish it.

Practical privacy rule

Use a Skill only when you are comfortable with Gemini interpreting the selected page. Move highly sensitive material out of the active tab, remove unnecessary personal details from a prompt, and pause at every confirmation screen. A Skill that summarizes a public article presents a different exposure than one run on a payroll, health, legal, or customer-management page.

Who can use Chrome AI Skills

Chrome Help lists these availability conditions:

  • A Chromebook Plus, Mac, or Windows computer.
  • The latest Chrome version, with Gemini in Chrome enabled.
  • A personal Google Account.
  • Chrome set to English (United States).
  • Age 13 or the applicable age in your location.
  • A supported region.

Skills are rolling out gradually, so meeting every listed condition does not guarantee that the feature is visible. Managed or enterprise accounts do not have Skills unless an administrator enables the feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During the rollout, Chrome Help suggests checking Chrome version 147 or later. If Skills are still missing, the same guidance suggests enabling the Skills flag in chrome://flags, relaunching Chrome, and checking the Gemini side panel. Flags are experimental and rollout instructions can change; use the current Help page before changing a flag, especially on a managed computer.

How to create and run a Skill

  1. Open Gemini in Chrome and use a prompt that produces a repeatable result, such as extracting dates, rewriting selected information, or creating a concise checklist.
  2. Save that useful prompt from your Gemini chat history, or choose to create a new Skill. Give it a name that describes the task rather than the website where you first used it.
  3. Edit the saved instructions so they state the desired format, limits, and output language. Remove instructions that would be unsafe or unnecessary on unrelated pages.
  4. Open the page you want Gemini to interpret. If you intend to use another open page, select that tab as supported by the launch experience.
  5. Open the Gemini side panel and invoke the Skill with / or the plus button.
  6. Check the resulting context and output. If Gemini proposes an external action, inspect the confirmation details before approving it.
  7. Return to the Skill editor when the prompt needs refinement. A saved Skill is reusable, so a vague instruction can produce repeated mistakes across different pages.

Common problems and safer fixes

The Skill is not visible

Confirm that you are on a supported computer, using the latest Chrome, signed in with a personal account, using English (United States), and in a supported region. Check whether Gemini in Chrome is enabled. If you use a work or school account, ask the administrator whether Skills are enabled. Because availability is staged, the feature may simply not have reached your account.

The output ignores part of the page

Chrome Help confirms that Skills read active-tab content but does not define every included element. Try a simpler page, make the relevant text visible, or copy only the necessary passage into the prompt. Do not infer from one successful run that hidden fields, embedded content, or every page component will always be read.

Gemini asks for a permission or confirmation

Separate a request to share or use context from a request to perform an action. If the request is not necessary for your task, deny it and revise the prompt. When an action is proposed, verify recipients, destinations, dates, and text before confirming. If you did not expect an action at all, cancel and inspect the Skill instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are worried about a private tab

Stop the run, switch to a non-sensitive page, and review Gemini in Chrome’s tab-sharing and browsing controls. A Skill’s documented page context is enough reason to avoid running it on confidential material unless your organization has approved that use.

Questions to ask before adopting Skills

  • Is the prompt narrow enough to run safely on pages with different content?
  • Do you know which tab is selected when you invoke it?
  • Would the result expose personal or regulated information?
  • Does the task really need location, microphone, tab sharing, or browsing access?
  • Can you review an action before anything is sent, scheduled, or changed?
  • Does your account, region, language, device, and administrator policy support the feature?

The most accurate privacy expectation today is limited but useful: a Skill is a reusable Gemini prompt that reads the selected page, while broader browsing and action capabilities belong to separate Gemini controls. Google documents confirmation for certain actions, but the Skills material does not provide a complete permission, retention, human-review, or training policy. Configure only the Gemini capabilities you need and treat each confirmation as a real security checkpoint.
