What the Christmas Holidays modpack adds
Christmas Holidays is a Forge modpack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1. It is marked as compatible with both client and server play and is tagged Adventure, Multiplayer, Quests, and Lightweight. Its theme combines Christmas decoration, snowy biomes, holiday food, quests, additional enemies, and new structures. Those features make it a better fit for a shared seasonal world than a purely cosmetic client pack: the server must load the same gameplay mods that the players do.

The project FAQ gives separate memory recommendations for a client that is struggling to load or maintain frame rate and for a dedicated server. Use those recommendations as starting allocations, then watch actual usage as more players and chunks are active.

Download the server archive that matches the client release you intend to run. If the project publishes a newer 1.20.1 server-pack file later, select the same release on both sides instead of mixing files from different dates.

Choose the right distribution
Why CurseForge is the safest choice for a full server
The project documentation identifies CurseForge as the fullest distribution. It contains the content needed for the complete experience, including the quest system. The official server-pack page on CurseForge supplies a ZIP intended for deployment on a 1.20.1 Forge server, so it is the practical starting point for a dedicated world.
What the Modrinth listing does not provide
Modrinth lists the project as client- and server-compatible, but its notes explain that some content and optimization mods cannot be added there, FTB Quests cannot be included, and server packs cannot be uploaded. That makes Modrinth useful for seeing the project and its compatibility labels, but it is not the source to use when your goal is the complete quest-enabled server.

Download and prepare the dedicated server
- Install Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1. Do this on each player’s computer and on the machine that will host the server.
- Install the Forge profile required by the pack. The server and every client must use Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1. Do not substitute a different Minecraft release or loader because the version number looks similar.
- Obtain the matching CurseForge server-pack ZIP. Use the official server-pack listing and choose the release that corresponds to the client pack. The cited release is 666.1 MB and carries a December 22, 2025 upload date.
- Extract the ZIP into a dedicated server folder. Keep the archive as a backup and avoid mixing its files with another modpack’s directory. A clean folder makes it easier to identify which configuration belongs to this pack.
- Launch the server with the files supplied by the pack. Use the server-pack’s included launch method rather than inventing a command line from a different Forge version. The first launch normally creates the remaining runtime files and stops or pauses for the EULA requirement.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA in the generated server files. Read the EULA and change the generated setting only if you agree to it. The project pages do not publish a pack-specific EULA walkthrough, so follow the instructions emitted by the server software you installed.
- Start the server again and wait for a complete world load. Watch the console for a ready state before asking players to connect. The initial launch can take longer while Forge and the mods create folders, registries, and configuration files.
- Stop the server cleanly before configuration edits. Never change the Snowy files while the process is writing them. A normal stop reduces the chance of a truncated configuration or a world-save problem.
The server pack is the authoritative file set for a dedicated instance. Copying a player’s client folder can leave out server-required files, bring in client-only optimization components, or produce a version mix that is difficult to diagnose.

Allocate enough RAM
The project FAQ recommends at least 8 GB of RAM for a dedicated server and says a larger player count may require more. For a client that remains stuck while loading or shows low FPS, it recommends at least 6 GB (6144 MB). These are the project owner’s recommendations, not independent benchmark results, so treat them as baselines rather than a guaranteed performance target.

Apply the server allocation carefully
Set the server’s memory in the launch method supplied with the server pack or in the control panel of your host. Reserve the recommended minimum for the Java process, but leave headroom for the operating system and monitoring tools. If the machine has less physical memory than the requested allocation, reduce the number of other services or move the server to a larger machine rather than forcing an allocation the computer cannot sustain.
Diagnose a client that still performs poorly
- Confirm the client is using the 1.20.1 Forge profile associated with the pack, not a vanilla profile.
- Check that the allocated amount is expressed as 6144 MB or more when you are following the project’s client recommendation.
- Close memory-heavy applications before increasing the game allocation again.
- Test in the same world and location after each change; a crowded area with many entities can behave differently from a fresh spawn.
Make it snow continuously
The Snowy mod controls the pack’s snowfall behavior. The project FAQ says continuous snow was disabled from version 3.5.0 and that the setting can be changed in the config → snowy folder. Because this is a server-side world behavior, make the change on the server and keep clients on the matching pack version.

- Stop the server. Editing a live configuration can be overwritten or leave a partially written file.
- Back up the current configuration. Copy the
config/snowyfolder to a safe location and label it with the pack version and date. - Open the Snowy configuration files. Use the file names and keys generated by your installed release; do not replace them with settings from a different version.
- Change the snowfall option that controls continuous snow. The exact key can vary by release, so use the comments or names in the generated file rather than guessing a new one.
- Save the file, restart the server, and test in a normal world area. Weather behavior may take a short time to become visible after startup.
- Have every player use the same pack version. A client on a different release can be rejected during connection or see behavior that does not match the server.
If the server no longer starts after an edit, stop it, restore the backup of config/snowy, and launch again. A restored file also gives you a controlled baseline for testing one change at a time.
Connect players without version errors
Client checklist
- Minecraft Java Edition is set to 1.20.1.
- The Forge profile is the one required by Christmas Holidays.
- The client distribution matches the server’s release, preferably the same CurseForge release when the server uses the official archive.
- Players have completed the first client launch so required folders and configs exist before joining.
- No one has manually removed a mod to solve a local crash without checking whether the server requires it.
Server checklist
- The server was extracted into its own folder and started from the included server-pack files.
- The EULA setting has been handled according to the server software’s instructions.
- The process reaches a ready state and is stopped cleanly before configuration changes.
- The server has at least the project’s recommended 8 GB allocation, with additional capacity considered for larger groups.
- The Snowy configuration, if changed, is backed up and tested after a restart.
Common failure patterns
Forge or Minecraft version mismatch: Recheck both the Minecraft 1.20.1 selection and the Forge profile. A client that launches vanilla or another Forge version is not equivalent to the required pack environment.
Missing quests or content: Verify that the server and clients came from the CurseForge distribution. The Modrinth listing explicitly omits FTB Quests and some content and optimization mods and cannot host a server-pack upload.

Server stops during startup: Confirm that the EULA requirement has been completed, that the files were extracted completely, and that the machine has enough available memory. Restore the last known-good configuration before changing more than one setting.

A “nearly the same” version can still contain a different mod list or configuration.
Snow does not remain continuous: Check that the edit was made in the server’s config/snowy folder, that the server was restarted, and that the change was made against the generated file for the installed release. Restore the backup if the file became invalid.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Self-hosting gives you direct control over the files, memory allocation, backups, and Snowy configuration. It also makes you responsible for operating-system updates, network access, crash recovery, and protecting the world save. A managed Minecraft host can be simpler for a group that does not want to maintain a machine, but the panel must support Forge 1.20.1 and let you import the official server pack rather than offering only vanilla or a different loader.
Questions to ask a managed host
- Memory: Can the plan allocate at least the project’s 8 GB server recommendation, and can it be increased if the group grows?
- Pack installation: Is there a one-click Forge 1.20.1 option or a documented way to upload/import the official CurseForge server-pack ZIP?
- Backups: Are automatic backups included, how frequently are they made, and can you download a copy before changing configuration?
- Player capacity: Does the plan have enough CPU, storage, and memory for your expected concurrent players and explored world?
- Support: Will support troubleshoot a modpack startup failure, or only the host panel and network?
- Price and renewal: Is the advertised amount introductory or recurring, and are extra backups, storage, or memory charged separately?
The project owner says the pack works with Bisect Hosting, recommends it, and advertises a 25% code. Treat that statement as a project-side compatibility claim: verify the current code, eligible region, landing page, renewal terms, and what level of modpack support is actually included before paying. The provider should still meet the RAM, Forge, server-pack import, backup, and support requirements above.

A reliable launch sequence for a seasonal server
- Choose one release. Record the CurseForge client release and the matching server-pack release before installing anything.
- Prepare the machine. Confirm available physical memory, reserve the project’s recommended server allocation, and create a dedicated folder and backup location.
- Install Forge 1.20.1. Use the Forge profile required by the pack on both the server and clients.
- Deploy the official ZIP. Extract the CurseForge server pack into the clean server folder.
- Run the first startup. Let the software generate files, complete the EULA step as required, and launch again until the server reaches a ready state.
- Test with one client. Join before inviting the whole group so a version or memory problem is easier to isolate.
- Back up before customization. Stop the server and copy the world and
config/snowyfolder. - Change snowfall only if desired. Edit the generated Snowy setting, restart, and verify the result.
- Document the release for players. Give everyone the exact Minecraft version, Forge profile, and pack release to install.
- Back up on a schedule. Seasonal worlds are easy to replace accidentally; retain copies outside the live server directory.
This order separates installation from customization. If a later change causes a problem, you can return to the known-good server-pack files and the backed-up configuration instead of rebuilding the entire world.
What to keep consistent during updates
When the project publishes a new pack release, update the server pack and clients as a coordinated change. Stop the server, back up the world and configuration, install the new matching files, and test with one client before opening the server to everyone. Do not assume that a release change affects only decorative assets: the project’s notes about content, optimization mods, and FTB Quests mean the distribution itself can change what is present.
Keep an inventory of the active Minecraft version, Forge profile, pack release, server memory allocation, and any Snowy edits. That short record turns a connection error or startup failure into a comparison task rather than a guess.
