The right Christmas art supplies depend on what you plan to make. For scratch-art ornaments, gather oil pastels, cardstock, and simple paper tools; for decorated ornaments, choose blanks and paint or embellishments; for cards, focus on paper, drawing media, and adhesives. A bundled kit can simplify a classroom or group activity, but check its contents and age guidance before buying.
Start with the project, not a general supply list
Christmas crafts draw on a few different material families: paper and drawing media, paint and markers, ornament blanks, and embellishments such as glitter, sequins, ribbon, pom-poms, or bells. Make scratch-art ornaments
Crayola’s Scratch Art Ornaments activity uses oil pastels, white cardstock, scissors, a hole punch, a paper clip, and string. Color the cardstock with oil pastels, cover the colored surface with black pastel, then scratch a design into the dark layer to reveal the color. Crayola’s instruction is to “Use the rounded end of a paper clip to scratch a design in the black layer to reveal the color underneath.” Cut out ornament shapes, punch a hole, and attach string.
This option uses basic supplies rather than a preassembled ornament kit, so plan for the paper tools and string as well as the pastels. The activity page displays age guidance of “8 and up, 6 and up”; consult that specific page and activity rather than treating it as a universal age recommendation for craft materials.

Fill clear ornament blanks
Clear plastic blanks work for more than one approach. Discount School Supply’s listing describes applying glue inside an ornament and adding rice, sand, confetti, or glitter; it also suggests fillings such as pom-poms, feathers, or wood curls. Choose a filling based on the look and texture you want, and check the blank’s instructions for how it opens and closes.
Paint or embellish wooden and ceramic forms
Wooden and ceramic ornament blanks can be decorated with paints, markers, crayons, glue, glitter, sequins, or other embellishments. Gather the blank and the chosen media together before starting: the blank determines what surface you are decorating, while the media and add-ons create the finish. Seasonal craft listings show these as distinct options, but do not establish that one material or blank performs better than another.

Materials for Christmas cards and paper crafts
For handmade cards and other flat paper projects, start with card or board and add the materials that fit the design: tissue paper for layered texture, ribbon or string for a dimensional accent, paint or drawing and coloring media for images, and adhesive to secure the pieces. They can be convenient for a classroom or group if the package contains the components and instructions for the intended activity. Before choosing one, check the number of crafts or participants it supports, what is included versus supplied separately, and any age guidance printed for that exact kit. Check the details before buying
- Match materials to the finished craft: scratch-art ornaments need pastels and paper tools; fillable ornaments need blanks and chosen fillings; cards need paper, media, and adhesive.
