To set up a Chosen’s Modded Adventure (CMA) server, use the project’s dedicated CMA Server Files 0.9.2 archive rather than assembling the mods yourself. The current listed release is for Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge and was released on May 3, 2024. Download that server pack from the project’s CurseForge Files page, extract it into a clean server directory, run its included start file, complete the first-run EULA step, and have every player install the identical 0.9.2 Forge profile.

Why the CMA server pack is the right starting point
A client modpack and a server distribution solve different problems. A client profile supplies the mods and settings needed to launch the game. A server pack is arranged for dedicated-server use and can include the server-side configuration, libraries, mods, and launch scripts that the author expects.

CurseForge’s multiplayer guidance recommends using a modpack’s server pack when one exists. For CMA, the Files page lists a separate entry named CMA Server Files 0.9.2 under the Minecraft 1.20 Server Packs category. Starting with that archive avoids manually choosing individual mod versions and reduces the chance of building a server that differs from the published pack.
Before you install: pin the exact build
Open the official Chosen’s Modded Adventure project and Files pages and record the three compatibility values before downloading anything:
- Chosen’s Modded Adventure 0.9.2
- Minecraft 1.20.1
- Forge
Do not silently substitute a newer pack, another Forge build, Fabric, or a different Minecraft release. The project listing and its files list are the version authority. Save a note or screenshot of the selected file name so you can identify the same build when inviting players or planning an update.

Self-hosted setup, step by step
1. Create a dedicated server directory
Choose a location that is separate from your normal Minecraft client instance. A dedicated directory makes permissions, backups, logs, and future version tests easier to manage. Use a short path without special characters if your operating system or backup software has trouble with long paths.
Do not place the archive inside an existing world or another modpack’s folder. The server directory should belong only to this CMA installation.
2. Download the server archive
On the Files page, select CMA Server Files 0.9.2 in the Minecraft 1.20 Server Packs section. Check the downloaded file name before extracting it. If the file is a client-only profile or has a different release number, stop and select the server-pack entry instead.

3. Extract the archive without an extra nesting level
Extract the archive directly into the dedicated server directory. The intended result is that the directory itself contains the files and folders from the archive, rather than one extra folder containing everything. Preserve the complete distribution, including any config, libraries, mods, and launch-script files supplied by the author.
Do not delete files because their purpose is not obvious. Server-side configuration and libraries can be required even when they do not look like ordinary mods. Keep the original archive as an untouched rollback copy.
4. Run the included start file for the first launch
Open the extracted directory and run the start file included with the pack. The exact file name, command, and Java executable are platform-specific; use what the downloaded archive provides rather than copying a command from an unrelated Forge installation.
The first launch normally creates additional files and may stop to present the server software’s EULA step. Follow the prompt shown by your copy of the server software. If it asks you to review and accept the EULA, read the terms and change the generated EULA setting only if you agree to them.
5. Stop and restart after initial generation
Once the first run has generated its files, stop the process cleanly and start it again with the same included start file. A second launch lets the server load the generated configuration and complete its normal startup path. Watch the console for a ready message before attempting to connect.

6. Set basic server options
After the first successful startup, configure the generated server settings for your group:
- Server name and message: identify the world so players know they selected the correct server.
- Difficulty and world settings: choose values that fit your intended play style before creating a long-term world.
- Operator permissions: grant operator access only to people who need administrative commands.
- Whitelist: enable it when the server is private and add each player’s name deliberately.
- Backups: schedule world backups and verify that a backup can actually be restored.
These are operational choices, not fixed CMA requirements. Record important changes so another administrator can reproduce the setup.
7. Make the server reachable
Players on the same local network may be able to connect using the host computer’s local address. Players elsewhere need a route through the host’s firewall and, usually, the router or hosting panel. Allow the Java server process through the operating-system firewall, configure the external game port shown in the server settings, and give friends the address they can reach.

If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections, local port forwarding may not work; a managed host or a private networking solution can be simpler.
8. Connect locally before inviting everyone
Test with one client on the host or local network first. Confirm that the world loads, the expected mods appear, and the console remains stable for several minutes. Only then give remote players the connection details. This isolates modpack problems from router, firewall, and latency problems.

Each player should create a launcher profile for Chosen’s Modded Adventure 0.9.2 on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge. Use a launcher that exposes the same project release and verify the labels before launching.

CurseForge explains that the Minecraft version and modloader labels determine compatibility. A player who installs the latest available CMA file, chooses Fabric, or selects another Minecraft version is not running the same build, even if the profile has a similar name.

Compare the complete client profile with the server archive first. The server pack’s mods and config contents are the useful reference for identifying an accidental mismatch.
Common connection and startup problems
The server-pack download is missing
Return to the Files page and filter for the exact 0.9.2 release and Minecraft 1.20 Server Packs category. A client download is not a substitute for the server distribution. If a future CMA release has no server pack, CurseForge’s general guidance is to use the official installer for the relevant modloader as a fallback, while recognizing that this may require more manual server preparation.
The client says a mod is missing or incompatible
- Read the error and note the named mod, version, or loader.
- Confirm that both sides use Minecraft 1.20.1.
- Confirm that both sides use Forge rather than another loader.
- Confirm that the client profile and server archive are both CMA 0.9.2.
- Compare the complete mod and configuration sets before changing anything.
- Restart the client after correcting the profile, then test again.
Changing one file at a time without first confirming the build can create a second mismatch and make the original error harder to diagnose.
The server starts but players cannot reach it
- Test from the host or local network to separate a game problem from an internet-routing problem.
- Check that the server process is still running and has reached its ready state.
- Review the operating-system firewall rule for the Java process.
- Check the router or hosting panel’s forwarding rule and the address given to remote players.
- Confirm that a whitelist has not excluded the intended player.
- Ask the player to use the external address rather than the host’s private local address when connecting from outside the network.
The server exits during startup
Read the console and log from the failed run before reinstalling. Verify that the archive was fully extracted, that the included start file is being run from the server directory, and that Java is installed in a version accepted by the downloaded Forge distribution. Because the cited CMA pages do not publish a pack-specific Java requirement, do not assume a version from another modpack is correct; check the archive’s own instructions and the error message.

No authoritative CMA page in the cited material specifies RAM, CPU, Java flags, maximum players, or benchmark results. Treat any number found in an unrelated guide as a guess. Instead, verify the Java instructions and memory flags in the downloaded archive, observe actual memory and CPU use with your operating system’s tools, and change one variable at a time.

Reduce simultaneous exploration or heavy automation while diagnosing load, keep the server software and operating system current, and use logs to identify repeated errors. If the machine cannot provide stable resources, managed hosting can supply a defined plan, but you still need to confirm that the host supports this exact 1.20.1 Forge server pack.

Keep the original 0.9.2 archive, the server configuration, and regular world backups. A backup is useful only if it is stored separately from the live world and can be restored in a test copy.
When planning an update:
- Record the current pack, Minecraft, and Forge versions.
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Back up the complete world and relevant configuration.
- Install the candidate release in a new directory instead of overwriting the working server.
- Copy the backup into the test directory and check that it loads.
- Have at least one client use the candidate profile and test the features your group relies on.
- Only switch the public server after the test succeeds, retaining the old directory for rollback.
The Files page shows multiple historical 1.20.1 Forge releases, so a file name that looks similar is not enough to identify a safe upgrade.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control over files and configuration, while managed hosting moves much of the operating-system and network administration to a provider. Neither option removes the need to pin the same CMA release and loader.
