Tick’s single-trip overseas Standard policy offers unlimited overseas medical expenses, but its cancellation, baggage and disruption limits are much smaller and depend on detailed conditions and exclusions. This review covers that specific policy—not Tick’s domestic or cruise policies, whose benefits and wording differ. The current single-trip Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) is dated 1 April 2026; if you already bought a policy, use the PDS attached to your account and your policy schedule, because the applicable edition depends on your purchase date.

What Tick Standard covers at a glance

Tick offers four single-trip cover levels: Basic, Budget, Standard and Top. Benefits, sums insured, age limits, destinations and maximum trip durations vary by level. These are policy limits, not evidence that a claim will be accepted or an indication of customer satisfaction. The insurer’s summary is useful for comparing headline limits, but the PDS sets out the conditions and exclusions.

Standard benefit Listed limit What to keep in mind
Overseas medical expenses Unlimited Policy terms, eligibility and exclusions still apply.
Trip cancellation $5,000 Covered reasons and claim conditions apply.
Cutting a trip short $5,000 Check the PDS for covered events and eligible expenses.
COVID-19 cancellation or trip disruption $2,500 A separate, limited benefit with specific diagnosis and necessity requirements.
Personal belongings and baggage $4,000 Item sub-limits and other conditions can reduce what is payable for a particular item.
Travel delay expenses Up to $500 Conditions apply; this is not an automatic payment for any delay.
Rental-car excess $2,000 Applies to the excess component under the rental agreement; it does not replace rental vehicle insurance.
Standard excess $200 The PDS applies the excess by policy section, person or event as described there, rather than as one blanket amount for every claim.

The limits above are stated in Tick’s 2026 product summary and benefit table, with the $200 excess set out in the current single-trip PDS dated 1 April 2026. Check the PDS and schedule for the exact conditions that apply to your trip.

Does Tick Standard cover COVID-19?

Tick’s 2026 summary lists unlimited overseas COVID-19 medical expenses and a $2,500 limit for COVID-19 cancellation or trip disruption under Standard and Top. The cancellation and amendment benefit is not blanket pandemic cover: under the PDS, the traveller must receive a medical diagnosis after buying the policy, and the change must be necessary and unavoidable.

The PDS excludes, among other things, government travel bans, “Do not travel” warnings, border closures, mandatory quarantine that does not result from the traveller’s diagnosis, testing costs and costs incurred after returning to Australia. The summary limit therefore should not be read as cover for every expense or disruption related to COVID-19. Check the current wording for the precise circumstances and exclusions.

What does Standard cover for cancellation and trip interruption?

The listed limits are $5,000 for trip cancellation and $5,000 for cutting a trip short. Those figures do not mean all prepaid costs or every reason for changing plans is covered. Eligibility depends on the insured event, the expense and the policy conditions.

CHOICE’s review distinguishes cancellation expenses from additional expenses for transport incidents: it says Standard excludes cancellation expenses for mechanical breakdowns and transport accidents, but includes additional expenses for transport accidents and mechanical breakdowns. These are different benefit types, so “transport incidents are covered” is too broad. Confirm the event and the kind of expense against the PDS that applies to your policy.

How much baggage and delay cover is included?

Standard lists $4,000 for personal belongings and baggage, subject to item sub-limits and conditions. The headline sum is not necessarily the amount payable for a lost or damaged individual item. Check the PDS limits for the belongings you plan to take and the circumstances in which loss or damage is covered.

Tick lists up to $500 for travel-delay expenses. The “up to” limit is subject to the policy’s qualifying conditions; it is not a flat benefit paid whenever travel is delayed.

Do natural disasters or winter sports need an upgrade?

Natural disasters

For an unexpected natural disaster to be a claimable event, Tick requires the Natural disaster option to have been purchased and shown on the policy schedule. Events known at the time of purchase are not covered under this optional benefit as described in the PDS. Check that the option appears on your schedule and review its conditions before relying on it.

What exclusions and eligibility details matter?

Other disruption exclusions

CHOICE reports that the product excludes pandemics other than COVID-19 and identifies distinctions involving civil unrest and terrorism. Those are consumer-review summaries, not a substitute for the current policy wording; check the precise scope in the applicable PDS rather than assuming that all events in those categories are treated alike.

Age, destination and trip duration

The PDS sets different age limits, destination eligibility and maximum trip durations by cover level. Standard lists worldwide travel, including the USA, but trip-duration limits change with the traveller’s age and destination. Check the PDS tables against every traveller and the full itinerary; the policy schedule records the cover selected for your trip.

Rental-car excess

The $2,000 Standard benefit concerns the excess component under the rental agreement; it does not replace insurance for the rental vehicle. The PDS also requires compliance with the rental agreement and conditions relating to authorised drivers. Check those requirements before driving or relying on the benefit.

How to assess whether Standard fits your trip

  1. Confirm the policy type and edition. Make sure you are reviewing single-trip overseas Standard, not a domestic or cruise policy. For a policy already purchased, use the PDS attached to your account and the schedule; for a new purchase, Tick identifies its current single-trip PDS as dated 1 April 2026.
  2. Check eligibility for each traveller and destination. Match ages, destinations and trip length to the PDS limits and destination definitions.
  3. Compare the limits with your likely costs. In particular, assess whether $5,000 cancellation and trip-cut-short limits and $4,000 baggage cover—with item sub-limits—are sufficient for your prepaid expenses and belongings.
  4. Review medical-condition rules and exclusions. Read the applicable PDS wording for pre-existing medical conditions and the events relevant to your itinerary; do not infer cover from the unlimited medical headline.
  5. Add any needed options and verify the schedule. Check whether natural-disaster or winter-sports cover is needed, and make sure any selected option appears on the policy schedule.
  6. Compare total quotes on equal terms. Compare actual PDS wording and total price for the same travellers, destinations, dates and selected options. Include cancellation and interruption limits, baggage sub-limits, excess, eligibility, medical-condition terms and disruption exclusions—not just the medical limit.

Which documents should you read before buying or claiming?

The PDS is the contract wording. Tick Travel Insurance’s Product Disclosure Statement dated 1 April 2026 says: “This document contains the full terms and conditions that apply to your policy.” The insurer’s cover summary can help you compare benefits, but it directs readers to the PDS for conditions and exclusions.
