Use four AA alkaline batteries in a Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt or Encode Smart WiFi Lever. Schlage’s US specifications identify that size and chemistry for both products. Schlage estimates “up to six months of battery life with typical use,” and says the lock touchscreen and Schlage Home app provide advance low-battery notice. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed interval or an independently measured battery comparison.
Which batteries fit a Schlage Encode?
For the residential Schlage Encode models covered by Schlage’s current US product pages, the supported replacement is four AA alkaline batteries:
| Encode model | Battery requirement | Schlage’s stated typical-use life | Low-battery warning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt with Greenwich trim | Four AA alkaline batteries | Up to six months | Lock touchscreen and Schlage Home app |
| Encode Smart WiFi Lever with Century trim | Four AA alkaline batteries | Up to six months | Schlage describes advance notice through the lock and app for the Encode family |
See the Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt product specifications and Encode Smart WiFi Lever product specifications. Schlage’s family guidance also describes four AA batteries and advance low-battery notice: Which Schlage Encode WiFi smart lock is right for me?

What “best” means for an Encode battery replacement
“Best” is not a substantiated brand ranking for this lock. Schlage specifies the AA size and alkaline chemistry, but its product pages do not name a preferred battery maker or claim that one brand lasts longer than another. No independent, brand-by-brand Encode runtime study is established here.
For a practical purchase, choose a reputable, fresh pack that meets these requirements:
- AA size, not AAA or another format.
- Alkaline chemistry, as listed in Schlage’s Encode specifications.
- Four matching cells from the same pack, rather than mixing old and new batteries.
- Packaging with a clearly printed expiration or best-before date and no signs of leakage or damage.
- A pack size that leaves you with a sensible spare set for the next replacement.
Price, pack size, shelf life and availability vary by retailer and date. Because those figures change, compare the current package information where you buy rather than relying on an old price or an unverified “longest-lasting” claim.

Battery size and chemistry are part of the lock’s electrical design. Schlage’s Encode deadbolt and lever pages both identify four AA alkaline batteries, so that is the only combination directly supported by the cited specifications.

Do not treat a different chemistry as an automatic upgrade. The cited Encode documentation does not endorse lithium primary cells or rechargeable AA cells, and it does not establish that either option improves runtime or reliability in an Encode. Unless Schlage’s documentation for your exact model explicitly authorizes another chemistry, stay with four AA alkaline cells.
Never combine chemistries, brands with visibly different condition, or partly used cells with new cells. Uneven charge levels can reduce useful capacity and increase the chance of leakage or poor contact. If one cell is weak, replace the complete four-cell set.
How long will the batteries last?
Schlage uses the wording “up to six months of battery life with typical use.” The phrase applies to the Encode deadbolt and lever product information and was present on the manufacturer pages checked October 13, 2026. “Up to” describes an upper estimate under typical-use conditions; it is not a promise that every installation will run six months.

Your replacement interval can be shorter or longer than that estimate. The lock’s actual workload, how often it operates and the conditions around the installation all affect real-world results. Rather than scheduling a replacement on a fixed date, use the lock’s warning system and keep a spare four-cell pack available.

Do not convert the estimate into a guarantee such as “Encode batteries always last six months,” and do not use it as evidence that one retail brand outperforms another. Schlage has not published a comparative brand test in the cited material.
How to replace the four batteries
The exact cover and fastener arrangement depends on the Encode model and trim. Use the printed instructions or the support material for your specific lock for the physical access step. The following sequence keeps the electrical change consistent without assuming a particular cover design.
- Confirm the model. Verify that the lock is an Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt or Encode Smart WiFi Lever, and note the trim and finish so you consult the right instructions.
- Prepare the replacement set. Have four new AA alkaline batteries from one pack ready. Check the cells for dents, corrosion, swelling or damaged wrapping; do not install a damaged cell.
- Keep the door accessible. Perform the change while you can enter the property and, where practical, with the door open. That avoids being locked out if the lock needs a moment to restart or a battery contact is imperfect.
- Open the battery compartment. Follow the model’s documented access procedure and retain any cover or screws in a safe place.
- Remove all four old cells. Observe the positive and negative markings before removing them. Do not pry against wiring or contacts with a sharp metal tool.
- Install the new cells in the marked orientation. Match every plus and minus symbol in the compartment. All four batteries should be the new AA alkaline cells prepared in step 2.
- Close and secure the compartment. Refit the cover exactly as the model instructions show. A loose cover can leave the cells or contacts vulnerable to movement.
- Test local operation. Confirm that the touchscreen responds and that the lock can lock and unlock normally using an authorized method. Keep the door open during the first test if possible.
- Check the Schlage Home app. Allow the lock to reconnect if necessary, then look for its battery status or warning. A recently replaced set should not continue to report a low-battery condition.
- Dispose of the old cells safely. Follow local battery-recycling or household-hazardous-waste rules. Do not place leaking batteries in the lock or store them loose with metal objects.
Use the lock’s warnings instead of guessing
Schlage says Encode provides low-battery indication on the lock touchscreen and in the Schlage Home app, with advance notice. Treat either warning as a replacement prompt, not as a reason to wait until the lock stops responding.
When the touchscreen reports low battery
- Unlock or otherwise secure access to the property before opening the compartment.
- Replace all four batteries with a fresh, matched set of AA alkaline cells.
- Test the lock locally after closing the compartment.
- Check the app again after the lock has had time to reconnect.
When the app reports low battery
Use the app alert as an early reminder, then perform the same complete four-cell replacement. If the app and touchscreen disagree immediately after replacement, verify cell orientation, that every battery is fully seated and that the cover is correctly secured before repeating the test.

When there is no warning
The absence of an alert is not proof that the batteries are new. If the lock behaves inconsistently, responds slowly or has been installed long enough that the manufacturer’s “up to six months” estimate is plausible, inspect and replace the set. Keep the physical key or another approved entry method available while diagnosing the lock.

Read the label, not just the marketing name
Look for “AA” and “alkaline” on the same package. Terms such as “high power,” “extended performance” or “premium” do not establish compatibility beyond the chemistry and size printed on the label.
Check freshness and condition
Select a pack with a later manufacturer date or expiration date when several options are available. Avoid loose cells, crushed packaging and batteries showing white residue, swelling or leakage. Store unused batteries in their original packaging in a cool, dry place, away from loose metal objects.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBuy a complete replacement set
Because the Encode uses four cells, a four-pack is the minimum complete change. A larger pack can be useful when you want one or more complete spare sets, but calculate the number of full four-cell changes rather than counting individual batteries.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
| Problem | Likely mistake or limitation | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| The lock still reports low battery after replacement | A cell is reversed, not fully seated, damaged or the compartment is not closed correctly. | Open the compartment, compare every cell with the polarity marks, reseat all four cells and secure the cover. Test locally and then check the app. |
| The lock works intermittently | Mixed old and new cells, mixed chemistries or poor contact. | Remove the entire set and install four matching AA alkaline batteries. Inspect for visible corrosion or damaged contacts. |
| A buyer installed rechargeable AA cells | The cited Encode specifications identify alkaline batteries and do not endorse rechargeable chemistry. | Replace them with four AA alkaline cells unless Schlage’s documentation for the exact model explicitly says otherwise. |
| Only one battery was replaced | The lock is designed for a four-cell set, and the remaining cells may have different charge levels. | Replace all four at the same time with a matched set. |
| The lock will not respond during a change | The battery compartment may not be closed, a cell may be reversed, or the set may be depleted. | Check orientation and seating, reinstall the cover and retry with a known-fresh four-cell alkaline set. Keep an alternate authorized entry method available. |
| A retailer promises a longer runtime for a particular brand | Schlage’s cited pages do not establish a brand comparison. | Judge the pack by AA size, alkaline chemistry, freshness, condition and price; treat runtime superiority as unverified. |
Compatibility boundaries
This recommendation is specifically for Schlage Encode Smart WiFi residential deadbolts and levers represented by the cited US product pages. It should not be generalized to every Schlage electronic lock, keypad, smart-lock generation or commercial model. Before ordering, compare the model number and battery information in your lock’s documentation with the product page for that exact device.
Trim changes such as Greenwich or Century affect the product configuration, but the cited Encode deadbolt and lever pages both specify four AA alkaline batteries. If your physical lock has a different model label or a different compartment, stop and verify its documentation rather than forcing the Encode recommendation onto it.
A simple maintenance plan
- Record the date whenever you install a fresh four-cell set.
- Keep one complete spare set in its original package, stored away from heat and moisture.
- Enable or monitor notifications in the Schlage Home app so an advance warning is visible.
- Respond to a touchscreen or app low-battery indication promptly.
- At every replacement, inspect the compartment and battery contacts for residue or damage.
- Recycle or dispose of the removed cells according to local rules.
This approach uses Schlage’s warning system while recognizing that “up to six months with typical use” is an estimate. It avoids both premature brand switching and the risk of waiting for a complete battery failure.
Bottom line for Schlage Encode owners
Buy four fresh AA alkaline batteries for an Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt or Encode Smart WiFi Lever. Schlage estimates up to six months with typical use and provides low-battery indication on the touchscreen and through the Schlage Home app. There is no substantiated evidence in the cited product information for naming a best battery brand, promising a specific runtime, or recommending lithium or rechargeable alternatives.
