The right Bosch self-leveling laser depends on the line geometry, working distance, visibility, environmental protection and mounting method your job requires. For a room-wide horizontal reference, the GLL 2-20 is the relevant 360-degree option. For green cross-lines, Bosch lists the GLL100-42GL with a 100-foot range. For three full planes and receiver-assisted work, the GLL330-42CGL is the more capable layout tool. Short indoor tasks can be handled by the GLL 30 S or GLL25-10.
Those are task matches, not independent test rankings. The ranges, accuracies, visibility claims and protection ratings below are Bosch-published specifications from its US product pages, accessed in 2026. Each figure keeps Bosch’s stated distance and conditions so you can compare tools without treating unlike measurements as a laboratory head-to-head.

Before choosing from this list, decide whether you need a single cross, a line that wraps around a room, several 360-degree planes, or plumb points. A self-leveling mechanism cannot compensate for choosing the wrong projection pattern.
What a self-leveling laser actually does
A self-leveling laser uses an internal leveling system to keep its projected reference within the tool’s specified self-leveling range. Bosch lists a self-leveling range of up to 4 degrees for the GLL 2-20 and GLL25-10. If the tool is placed farther out of level than its mechanism can correct, the projected line should not be treated as a reliable reference; most tools indicate an out-of-level condition by making the beam flash or otherwise warning the operator. The beam’s geometry matters more than the phrase self-leveling. A cross-line tool gives one horizontal and one vertical reference from the instrument’s position. A 360-degree horizontal tool sends that level reference around the room, reducing the need to reposition the instrument. A three-plane laser adds full vertical planes, and a model with plumb points gives references directly above and below the tool. These layouts solve different alignment problems.

Choose it when switching between a single horizontal reference, a single vertical reference and a cross is more useful than 360-degree coverage. The cited Bosch information does not establish an IP rating or battery runtime for this model, so do not infer either from another GLL product.
GLL 50-20: compact cross-line with IP55
The GLL 50-20 is a 50-foot cross-line laser with Bosch-stated accuracy of 5/16 inch at 30 feet. Its IP55 dust and water-resistance rating is higher than the GLL 2-20’s published IP54 rating, although protection ratings describe test conditions rather than guaranteeing survival in every jobsite incident.

GLL330-42CGL: three 360-degree planes for complex layout
The GLL330-42CGL is a 12V Max green three-plane laser. Bosch describes one horizontal and two vertical 360-degree planes, a 100-foot range and 1/8-inch accuracy at 30 feet. This projection pattern can establish level and two perpendicular vertical references around a space without repeatedly rotating a basic cross-line tool.

GLL25-10: red cross-line with 4-degree self-leveling

Plumb points are the reason to choose this tool over a conventional cross-line model: they provide a direct transfer reference between locations above and below the instrument. Receiver operation is model-specific; Bosch names LR 6 and LR 7 for the GCL 2-160, not every receiver in its catalog.

How to choose a Bosch self-leveling laser step by step
- Draw the required lines. For one horizontal and one vertical reference, a cross-line model is sufficient. For a line around a room, select a 360-degree horizontal model. For full vertical coverage, select a three-plane model. If you must transfer points between floor and ceiling, include plumb points in the requirement.
- Measure the working distance. Compare your longest normal setup with Bosch’s stated range. Remember that the GLL 2-20 figure is a 65-foot diameter, while several other figures are simple distances. A receiver can extend range, but only when Bosch lists compatibility for that exact model.
- Compare accuracy at the same practical distance. Bosch states GLL 55 accuracy at 33 feet, GLL 2-20 accuracy at 30 feet and GCL 2-160 accuracy at 33 feet. Keep the distance beside every number; do not rank a 30-foot result against a 33-foot result as though they came from one independent test.
- Choose beam color for the setting. Green models may be easier to see in some bright interiors, and Bosch claims up to four-times brightness for the GLL100-42GL. That claim is not a guarantee under all lighting. Red-beam models can still be appropriate when the work is close, shaded or viewed with a compatible detector.
- Set the environmental requirement. Compare the published IP ratings: GLL 2-20 is IP54, GLL 50-20 is IP55, and GLL100-42GL and GLL330-42CGL are IP65. An IP rating does not replace sensible protection from impact, standing water or construction debris.
- Plan power before the job. The GLL100-42GL lists a 3.7V rechargeable battery, USB-C charging, an AA adapter and up to eight hours on Li-Ion. Correct setup and alignment procedure
- Inspect the tool and support. Check the lens, pendulum lock, mount and tripod for dust or damage. Install fresh batteries or charge the specified pack. A dirty lens or unstable support can move the line even when the self-leveling mechanism is functioning correctly.
- Place the laser within its leveling range. Set it on a stable floor, tripod or mount. For models Bosch specifies as self-leveling up to 4 degrees, keep the base closer to level than that limit whenever possible. If the out-of-level warning appears, reposition the tool instead of marking from the flashing line.
- Select only the lines needed. Turn off unused planes when the model allows it. A single horizontal line is easier to interpret for a level reference; adding every plane can make a busy room harder to read.
- Allow the line to settle. Avoid touching the mount while the internal leveling system stabilizes. Mark only after the line is steady and the tool is not being bumped by nearby work.
- Establish a control mark. Mark one known point, then move around the room or use the 360-degree plane to transfer that reference. For a cross-line tool, reposition it carefully and overlap the new line with the existing control mark.
- Use a receiver only as specified. Attach the compatible detector according to its instructions and select the correct line or detection mode. For the GLL330-42CGL, remember that Bosch’s 330-foot figure is tied to the horizontal line at 135 and 315 degrees.
- Lock or pack the tool after marking. Engage the transport lock if the model has one, remove batteries for long storage when appropriate, and protect the optical window. Recheck a critical layout if the instrument has been dropped or exposed to a hard impact.
Visibility, accuracy and environmental trade-offs
Why range and accuracy are separate decisions
Range describes how far Bosch says the beam can be used or seen under its stated conditions. Accuracy describes how far the projected reference may deviate at a specified test distance. A tool with a longer listed range is not automatically more accurate, and a tighter accuracy figure at 33 feet does not prove better performance at 100 feet. Use the number closest to your actual layout distance and preserve the model’s measurement condition.

When green is worth considering
Green-beam models are most relevant when the line must remain visible over a longer indoor distance or in a brighter workspace. The GLL100-42GL and GLL330-42CGL both have Bosch-listed 100-foot ranges, but they solve different geometry problems: the former is a green cross-line tool, while the latter projects three 360-degree planes. The GLL100-42GL also offers a stated eight-hour Li-Ion runtime and AA adapter; the GLL330-42CGL is positioned around a 12V Max platform, receiver work and app connectivity.
How IP ratings should influence selection
IP54, IP55 and IP65 are model-specific protection classifications. The progression can help when a job involves more dust or water exposure, but it does not make any laser indestructible. Keep the tool covered when not in use, avoid laying it in pooled water, and clean the housing before opening a battery compartment or charging port.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Buying by the word laser instead of line layout: A cross-line tool cannot replace a 360-degree horizontal or three-plane model. Revisit the required geometry before comparing price or color.
- Comparing accuracy figures without their distances: Keep 30-foot and 33-foot Bosch specifications labeled. They are not interchangeable independent measurements.
