There is no single best HDD for gaming: the right choice depends on whether you need an internal drive for a desktop PC, an external drive for a console, or inexpensive space to keep games you do not play every day. An HDD is best treated as bulk storage; use an SSD when faster game loading is the priority. Seagate recommends pairing an SSD for speed-critical tasks with an HDD for bulk game storage (Seagate’s gaming storage guidance).
When an HDD makes sense for gaming
Choose an HDD when you want room for a large game library and can accept slower access than an SSD. It can hold games you play less often, recordings, and other large files. Keep frequently played games on an SSD if reducing load times matters to you. Western Digital describes hard drives as a cost-effective way to store many games, but that is the manufacturer’s positioning, not an independent price or performance comparison (Western Digital gaming storage solutions).
Pick the right type of drive
Internal HDD for a desktop PC
For a desktop with an available 3.5-inch drive bay and SATA connection, Western Digital’s WD_BLACK internal gaming HDD line is one example to consider. Western Digital lists capacities up to 10 TB and up to 256 MB of DRAM cache on higher-capacity models. Those figures describe the manufacturer’s product range; they do not establish a universal gaming-performance ranking. The manufacturer also suggests pairing an HDD with an SSD for a dual-drive setup (Western Digital gaming storage solutions).

A portable USB HDD is easier to move between compatible devices and does not require a desktop drive bay. Western Digital lists its WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive in capacities up to 6 TB, with up to 130 MB/s sequential read performance, USB 3.2 Gen 1, and a three-year limited warranty on the cited regional product page. These are manufacturer specifications, not measured game load times (WD_BLACK P10 product page).

Check console support before buying
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
Sony says compatible SuperSpeed USB drives from 250 GB to 8 TB can be used for external storage. Compatible PS4 games can be played directly from an external USB drive connected to a PS4 or PS5. PS5 games can be stored on an external USB drive, but must be transferred back to the PS5’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD before they can be played (PlayStation external storage guidance).
That distinction matters when choosing a drive: an external HDD can expand storage for a PS5 library, but it is not a way to play PS5 games directly from the drive.

Xbox Series X|S
Western Digital lists the P10 as able to store Xbox Series X|S games and play Xbox One games. Its WD_BLACK D10 Game Drive for Xbox is listed at capacities up to 12 TB; WD says it can archive Series X|S games and play or store Xbox One games. These are manufacturer compatibility claims, so verify support for your exact console and game before purchase (P10 product page; WD gaming storage solutions).
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How to choose a gaming HDD
- Decide what the drive will do. For faster loading, keep active games on an SSD and use the HDD for bulk storage. If you only need extra room for a library, an HDD may fit that role.
- Match the form factor and connection. For an internal desktop drive, check for an open 3.5-inch bay and SATA connection. For an external drive, confirm that the USB interface and included cable work with the device’s port.
- Check the platform’s rules. Confirm whether the games you want to play can run from external storage or can only be stored there. For PlayStation, consult Sony’s current compatibility guidance.
- Compare capacity, warranty, and regional price. Available models, prices, and stock vary by region. Check the exact model listing rather than assuming every capacity has the same features or warranty.
What the advertised speed and capacity do—and do not—tell you
A stated capacity tells you how much data a model is designed to hold; it does not tell you how quickly a particular game will load. Likewise, the P10’s “up to 130 MB/s” figure is a sequential-read specification, not a guaranteed result for game loading. The available product information does not provide a controlled comparison of game load times, so it cannot establish that one listed HDD is objectively fastest for gaming.
