For a consumer aerosol with a documented sporting-equipment use, Rust-Oleum Specialty Camouflage Spray is the closest fit: its stated purpose includes hunting and sporting equipment, but its cited technical data does not establish firearm approval or firearm-specific testing. Krylon High Heat is described for metal and rated by Krylon for up to 600°F continuous heat, but its cited page does not identify firearm use. A dedicated firearm coating such as Cerakote follows a more specialized process with its own component exclusions, safety precautions, and cure requirements.

High-heat metal paint
Krylon’s High Heat page describes use on metal and claims resistance up to 600°F continuously. That figure is a product claim, not proof that a firearm part reaches that temperature, can tolerate the paint’s application or cure conditions, or will retain its finish during firearm use. The cited page does not identify firearms as an intended application.
Dedicated firearm coating
A dedicated process comes with specific application and component guidance rather than simply a broad consumer-aerosol label. Cerakote’s training manual warns against coating certain functional parts, while its H-Series guidance directs users to product-specific technical data sheets and substrate temperature limits. - Prepare steel as needed. Remove loose rust, scale, and deteriorated coatings. Sand previously coated glossy or hard surfaces to create a surface profile.
- Check the application conditions. The product data specifies 50–90°F (10–32°C) and humidity below 65%.
- Apply at the specified distance. Spray 12–16 inches from the surface in overlapping strokes.
- Follow the current label and data sheet. Product instructions may change; do not substitute generic advice for the current directions on the can.
For broader spray technique, Krylon’s general spray-paint FAQ recommends several thin coats, an even side-to-side motion, overlapping passes, and testing technique on scrap. Its stated best-result conditions—55–75°F (13–24°C) and humidity below 60%—apply to that general guidance, not to Rust-Oleum’s product-specific range.

Safety and firearm-specific cautions
Cerakote’s Elite and H-Series Training Manual, dated January 17, 2017 in the document filename, states: “For firearm applications, do not coat springs, sears, firing pins, bolt faces, gas rings or feed ramps.” It also advises working in a well-ventilated, well-lit spray booth, wearing a respirator, protective gloves, and safety glasses, and reviewing the safety data sheet. These are instructions from that Cerakote training material; also consult the firearm manufacturer’s guidance and the current documentation for the exact coating being used.
For Cerakote H-Series, cure schedules vary by coating and substrate. Cerakote advises reviewing the product-specific technical data sheet and checking temperature stability before oven curing. A firearm can combine materials such as metal and polymer with different heat tolerances, so a schedule suitable for one component or coating should not be assumed suitable for the entire assembly.

What remains unknown about durability
The cited sources do not show which aerosol is most durable on firearms, whether Rust-Oleum Specialty Camouflage or Krylon High Heat has been tested on a specific firearm model, or how either performs under solvents, abrasion, repeated handling, or firing heat. Nor is there an independent comparative firearm-durability statistic here. Without those data, a ranking would go beyond the evidence.
For a sporting-equipment camouflage aerosol, Rust-Oleum’s stated use is the clearest match among these examples. For a metal paint with a stated continuous heat rating, Krylon High Heat provides a claim to evaluate against the actual part and current product instructions—not a firearm-suitability guarantee.
