For elliptical workouts combined with other gym activities, cross-training shoes are a sensible place to start. There is no established single “best” shoe for an elliptical machine: the available guidance supports choosing for your mix of activities, individual support needs, fit, and comfort—not relying on a model ranking.
What do you mean by “tennis shoes”?
People often use “tennis shoes” to mean athletic sneakers in general. But tennis or court shoes are a specific category designed for court movement, including side-to-side motion and quick changes of direction. Cross-training shoes are intended to serve a broader mix of sports and exercise.
That distinction matters when choosing footwear. Court-specific lateral support may be useful for tennis, but the sources reviewed do not directly test court shoes on elliptical machines or show that they are better for elliptical workouts. If by “tennis shoes” you mean ordinary athletic sneakers, consider their intended use and fit rather than the casual label.
Which shoe category fits your workout?
| Workout or need | Reasonable starting point | What the guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Elliptical plus varied gym activities | Cross-training shoes | The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says a cross-training shoe may be the best choice for someone active in many forms of exercise each week. The Missouri Podiatric Medical Association describes cross-trainers as general health-club footwear with more lateral support and less flexibility than running shoes. |
| Elliptical workouts only | A comfortable, well-fitting athletic shoe suited to your feet and support needs | The sources reviewed do not establish an elliptical-specific shoe type or a tested best model. |
| Tennis or other court sports as well as gym workouts | Consider whether a court shoe or a cross-trainer better matches the activity mix | Tennis shoes are designed for lateral court movement; cross-trainers are intended to span multiple activities. The sources do not compare their performance on an elliptical. |
| Pain or stiffness affecting gait or posture | A supportive sneaker or an orthotic insert may be worth discussing with a clinician | The Arthritis Foundation says strong arch support or an orthotic insert can help keep hips and knees aligned on the elliptical for people whose pain or stiffness affects gait and posture. This is not a universal prescription. |
How to check fit and comfort
FootCareMD recommends trying shoes later in the day or after exercise, when feet may be larger, and wearing the socks you normally use for the activity. Check that your toes have room to move and that the heel feels secure. A shoe that feels comfortable and stable on your foot is a more useful choice than one selected by label alone.
#1 Best Overall
- ABZORB HEEL CUSHIONING - ABZORB heel crash pad absorbs impact on every step, paired with a molded PU insert for underfoot comfort that lasts from morning to night
- SUEDE LEATHER UPPER - Sturdy suede upper provides supportive structure and a classic look that breaks in nicely over time for a personalized fit
- DUAL DENSITY COLLAR - Dual density collar foam supports the ankle and helps maintain stability during workouts, walks, and all-day wear

- Try both shoes and stand or walk in them before deciding.
- Use your usual workout socks when assessing fit.
- Make sure the toes are not cramped and the heel does not slip.
- Consider whether the shoe feels appropriate for the other activities in your routine, not just the elliptical.
What if you have arthritis or need extra support?
The elliptical can provide cardiovascular and strengthening exercise with less force on joints than some higher-impact activities, according to the Arthritis Foundation. For people with arthritis-related pain or stiffness, that organization notes that sneakers with strong arch support or an orthotic insert may help keep hips and knees aligned when symptoms affect gait and posture.
Support needs differ from person to person, so this is not a guarantee that a particular shoe will correct alignment or prevent injury. The Arthritis Foundation recommends physical-therapy advice for people with arthritis. If pain persists or you are unsure what support is appropriate, seek individualized professional guidance rather than relying on a shoe category alone.

Why there is no reliable “best shoe” ranking here
The available sources offer general footwear and fit guidance; they do not report a direct comparison of tennis or court shoes, cross-trainers, or other models on elliptical machines. They also do not establish a shoe that prevents injury or works best for everyone. A ranked product list would suggest evidence that is not available.

AAOS notes that running and jumping can generate impact forces of three to five times a person’s body weight. That figure describes running and jumping generally; it is not a measurement of elliptical exercise and should not be used to infer how a shoe performs on an elliptical.
