In a healthcare, laboratory or other controlled work area, a keyboard or mouse has to satisfy two separate requirements: it must fit the person and task, and it must fit the approved cleaning workflow. A washable surface does not make a device sterile, while an ergonomically shaped device may be unsuitable for the disinfectant or barrier process your facility requires. Treat ergonomics and cleanability as parallel procurement tests, then verify the exact model against local infection-prevention rules.
The practical payoff is operational rather than a guaranteed statistic. A device that keeps wrists neutral, limits reaching and can be cleaned without disrupting work may reduce friction in a shift. The available guidance does not establish a measured productivity increase, injury reduction or infection reduction caused by ergonomic peripherals.
Why controlled workspaces need two separate tests
Computer peripherals are normally classified as noncritical equipment, not sterile instruments. They contact hands and work surfaces rather than sterile tissue, so a facility should not treat an ordinary keyboard as though it were a critical medical device requiring sterilization. The applicable process depends on the setting, contamination risk, equipment classification and the manufacturer’s instructions.
Ergonomic suitability is equally specific. Hand size, handedness, the amount of numeric entry, pointer precision, glove use, reach distance and the user’s physical limitations all affect whether a device helps or hinders. “Medical grade,” “antimicrobial” and “washable” are product descriptions, not proof of universal disinfectant compatibility, sterility or infection prevention.

For shared workstations, have both an infection-prevention representative and an ergonomics or occupational-health specialist review the choice. A product that passes only one review can create a new problem: a comfortable keyboard that cannot tolerate the approved disinfectant, or a sealed keyboard that forces awkward wrist or shoulder positions.
Set up the workstation before judging a peripheral
OSHA’s computer-workstation guidance is practical advice, not a new regulation. Its central test is whether the equipment can be arranged so the user works with a neutral posture. The keyboard should be directly in front of the user; shoulders should stay relaxed, elbows close to the body, and wrists straight and aligned with the forearms. Keyboard position and height
- Place the primary letter keys in front of the torso rather than offsetting the keyboard to make room for a device that is rarely used.
- Adjust the tray or desk so the forearms are approximately level with the floor and the shoulders do not lift while typing.
- Use a neutral wrist angle. A pronounced rear tilt can increase extension for some users, especially when the keyboard is high.
- Check the position while the user is wearing the gloves normally used on the job; glove thickness can change reach and key feel.
Pointer distance and reach
OSHA recommends keeping the mouse or other pointing device close to the keyboard. Reaching repeatedly across a wide desk can load the shoulder even when the keyboard itself is well positioned. A keyboard without a number pad may be useful when numeric entry is not central to the job because it can let the pointer move closer. This is a placement option, not evidence that compact keyboards improve outcomes for every user.

Fit the device to the task
OSHA’s purchasing guide suggests choosing an input device according to task requirements and physical limitations. A trackball, vertical mouse or another alternative may suit a particular user; none is automatically better. The evaluation checklist asks whether the keyboard and pointer fit the hand and task, can be positioned without reaching, and support appropriate arm and wrist posture.

What the evidence says about split and alternative keyboards
Split and tented keyboards can change shoulder rotation and wrist position. Some users may find that separating the key groups lets each hand rest in a more natural orientation; others may lose speed or need more desk space. Adjustable trays can help set height and distance, but they do not correct a poor chair, monitor position or desk depth by themselves.
OSHA explicitly states that alternative keyboards have not been shown conclusively to prevent discomfort and injury. Select these designs as an individual fit experiment, not as a guaranteed medical intervention. Give the user time to acclimate, measure whether the task can be performed without reaching or bent wrists, and retain a practical fallback if the design slows essential work.
Cleaning is a separate procurement requirement
Keyboards are difficult to clean because they have many seams and recesses and are touched frequently. CDC’s environmental infection-control recommendation places them among noncritical surfaces for which a barrier may be appropriate in certain circumstances. The guidance states: Use barrier protective coverings as appropriate for noncritical equipment surfaces that are touched frequently with gloved hands during the delivery of patient care; likely to become contaminated with blood or body substances; or difficult to clean (e.g., computer keyboards).
This is a conditional Category II recommendation, not a requirement to cover every keyboard.

CDC advises following the equipment manufacturer’s cleaning and maintenance instructions. Its 2024 healthcare-surface considerations tell facilities to evaluate compatibility with those instructions, disinfectant contact time, possible health risks, acceptability, cleaning effectiveness, staff training and the effects of repeated exposure. When disinfection is required, CDC says to use an EPA-registered hospital disinfectant according to the label’s safety precautions and directions. The CDC disinfection recommendations do not turn a standard computer keyboard into a device that should be sterilized. Your facility protocol and the exact model’s instructions control the method.
Compare peripheral categories by the problem they solve
The table separates cleanability features from ergonomic features. A category can address one concern without addressing the other.

A specialist supplier category demonstrates that washable healthcare keyboards and mice exist; it is not independent proof of a particular model’s durability, pathogen performance or ergonomic result. Review the manufacturer’s model-specific documentation, such as the products listed by Man & Machine Healthcare, without treating category marketing as validation.
A procurement process that works in practice
- Describe the work. Record typing volume, numeric entry, barcode or touchscreen use, pointer precision, shift length, handedness and whether users work in gloves. Note whether equipment is shared or assigned.
- Map the cleaning protocol. Identify the approved disinfectant, dilution, wet contact time, wiping method, drying requirement and who performs the task. Determine whether a barrier is required for the specific surface and situation.
- Check the exact instructions. Obtain the model’s cleaning sheet, compatibility list, ingress claims, warranty exclusions and connection requirements. “Washable” alone is insufficient. Reject any model whose instructions conflict with the facility’s agent or contact time.
- Arrange a supervised trial. Place the keyboard directly in front of the user, keep the pointer close, and adjust height and tilt. Have representative users perform normal tasks rather than only a short typing test.
- Evaluate posture and workflow. Look for relaxed shoulders, elbows near the body, straight wrists and no repeated reach. Time the real cleaning sequence, including disconnecting equipment, applying the product, observing contact time and returning the device to service.
- Document approval. Infection prevention, occupational health or ergonomics, information technology and procurement should record the approved model, cleaning agents, replacement process and training owner. Shared institutional purchases need a standard procedure, not informal user workarounds.
Build cleaning into the daily workflow
A cleanable device only helps if staff can clean it consistently. Post the approved method where the workstation is serviced, identify the responsible role and make contact time visible. Do not spray liquid directly into openings unless the manufacturer explicitly permits that method. Use the specified cloth or wipe, keep the surface wet for the labeled time, and let it dry as directed.

For a barrier approach, verify that the cover itself is compatible with typing, pointer movement, glove use and the cleaning schedule. Replace a damaged or loose cover promptly. A cover that bunches under the wrists can undermine the ergonomic setup; a cover that cannot be disinfected becomes another contaminated surface.
Plan for downtime and replacement. If the model must be unplugged or removed for cleaning, provide a safe place for it to dry and a spare if the task is continuous. Repeated exposure to chemicals can shorten service life even when the initial compatibility statement is favorable, so track failures and warranty decisions rather than assuming indefinite durability.

Assuming “medical grade” means sterile
Medical-sounding language does not establish a sterilization method or universal infection-control claim. Correct the assumption by checking classification, the facility’s protocol and the model’s complete instructions.
Buying a sealed keyboard that does not fit the user
A smooth, cleanable surface can still be too wide, too high or uncomfortable with gloves. Reposition the workstation first, then trial a different size, layout or pointing device while preserving the approved cleaning method.

Using a disinfectant by habit
A product used on countertops may damage plastics, coatings, seals or printed legends. Match the disinfectant, concentration and contact time to both the label and manufacturer instructions; when they conflict, pause procurement and obtain infection-prevention and technical guidance.
Mandating one alternative layout for everyone
Split, tented, compact and vertical designs have individual trade-offs. Offer an evaluated choice where the task and budget permit, and retain a standard option for users who work faster or more comfortably with it.
Measuring productivity without defining it
Fewer reaching motions, fewer cleaning interruptions and fewer equipment failures are plausible operational benefits, but they are not the same as a validated productivity statistic. If your facility wants evidence, define measures such as cleaning time, unplanned replacements, task completion time and reported discomfort, then compare them under the same workflow.

Ergonomic peripherals can be a useful operational lever when they improve a person’s fit and make the approved cleaning routine practical. The effect is conditional: the user must be able to maintain neutral posture, the pointer must stay within easy reach, and staff must be able to clean or cover the equipment correctly. No quantified productivity, injury-reduction or infection-reduction effect is established by the cited guidance.
The defensible decision is therefore not “buy the most ergonomic” or “buy the most washable.” Choose the model that passes both tests for the specific workstation, document the cleaning method, train the people who perform it and reassess when tasks, disinfectants, gloves or users change.
