All-in-one dishwasher tablets often work in soft water without extra salt, but your dishwasher manual and local water hardness should decide whether you add it. Five current UK products appear in Which?’s April 2026 test, but its public results do not disclose scores or establish which performs best specifically in soft water. Treat them as a shortlist to compare, not a ranked top five.
Five UK tablets to compare
Which? says it tested 12 dishwasher tablets and three dishwasher sheets in April 2026. Its assessment covers cleaning, glass cloudiness, water marks and sustainability. The accessible results list these five products, but do not reveal their scores or Best Buy decisions. The products are listed alphabetically, not ranked.

Do you need dishwasher salt in soft water?
Often, no: Finish UK states, “In areas with soft or moderately hard water, these tablets often perform well without the need for additional salt.” That is manufacturer guidance, not a rule for every tablet or machine. Check your water supplier or local authority for your household’s hardness, then follow your appliance manual and salt indicator. Fairy Australia gives a different, more specific product instruction: its Platinum salt action is stated to work up to 26°e, with salt advised above that level. How to compare tablet performance
Cleaning
Which? says it assesses dried-on grease, tea, spaghetti, egg yolk and milk. The accessible results do not provide item-level scores or show how individual products performed in soft water, so use these categories as a comparison framework rather than evidence that one shortlisted tablet cleans better.

Cloudy glass and water marks
Which? evaluates glass cloudiness after repeated washes and measures water marks. These are useful outcomes to watch at home, but the published summary does not break them down by water hardness. A cloudy film is not automatically proof that a tablet is unsuitable for soft water.

Compare current cost per wash rather than pack price alone; the figures in the table are dated listing snapshots. Supermarket options may be limited to in-store availability, and local stock or prices can differ.

Ingredients and sustainability
Which? says it contacts manufacturers about chemical composition and assesses products and packaging, but the accessible results do not disclose the details needed to assign individual products an environmental or ingredient rating.
Set up the dishwasher before changing tablets
- Check local hardness: use your water supplier or local authority’s information, then consult the appliance manual for the appropriate softener setting.
- Start with the machine’s normal directions: use one all-in-one tablet as its label and appliance manual specify. In soft water, separate salt may not be needed with some all-in-one products, but follow the machine’s salt indicator and manual rather than assuming every tablet replaces the dishwasher’s ion-exchange softener.
- Load the detergent dispenser correctly: follow the product label and machine instructions. Finish Quantum’s product page directs users to place the tab in the dry detergent chamber and warns that a loose tablet in the machine may dissolve too early. Finish Quantum use instructions.
- Use the full capsule or tablet unless its label says otherwise: Fairy says one capsule is for one load and instructs users not to unwrap or puncture it. Do not split or cut capsules unless the product instructions specifically allow it. Fairy’s product instructions.
- Investigate poor results before switching brands: check loading, dispenser placement, cycle temperature, the machine’s softener setup and the product directions. Why the appliance manual can change the answer
Detergent needs can vary with machine design, soil level and water hardness. For example, a Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer care guide says quantity depends on soil and hardness, and its soft-water table does not recommend a tablet for light soil.
