Choose Buffer if you mainly need affordable publishing, straightforward analytics, and channel-based pricing. Choose Sprout Social if your team will make regular use of social listening, competitor reporting, more extensive customer-care inbox tools, or advanced workflows. The best fit depends on your actual number of channels and users—and on whether you need those higher-tier capabilities often enough to justify their cost.
This comparison reflects vendor materials, not an independent hands-on test. Pricing and feature packaging can change, so treat the figures below as a planning guide and confirm current terms with each vendor before subscribing.
How Buffer and Sprout Social charge
The main pricing difference is the unit: Buffer prices paid plans per connected channel, while Sprout Social prices its plans per seat. A starting price alone therefore does not tell you which will cost less. Estimate the number of channels and users you actually need, then compare plans that include the features you require.

| Platform or plan | Published price or limit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Buffer Free | Up to 3 channels; 10 scheduled posts per channel; 1 user | Buffer’s pricing page listed these limits on October 8, 2026. |
| Buffer Essentials | $6 per channel per month | Price quoted in Buffer’s comparison article published July 1, 2026. Total depends on channel count and billing schedule. |
| Buffer Team | $12 per channel per month | Price quoted in Buffer’s July 1, 2026 comparison article; the plan includes unlimited users according to that article. |
| Sprout Social Essentials | $99 per seat per month | Buffer’s July 1, 2026 comparison article quotes this monthly rate. A Sprout pricing page retrieved October 8, 2026 also displayed $99 per seat per month billed monthly, but it was on a staging subdomain and should be treated as provisional. |
| Sprout Social Standard | $249 per seat per month | Monthly price quoted in Buffer’s July 1, 2026 comparison article; verify current production pricing. |
| Sprout Social Professional | $399 per seat per month | Monthly price quoted in Buffer’s July 1, 2026 comparison article; verify current production pricing. |
| Sprout Social Advanced | $499 per seat per month | Monthly price quoted in Buffer’s July 1, 2026 comparison article; verify current production pricing. |
| Sprout Social Enterprise | Custom pricing | Buffer’s comparison article describes this plan as custom-priced. |
As a simple illustration using Buffer’s quoted monthly rates, four channels would be $24 per month on Essentials or $48 per month on Team, before any billing-schedule differences. At the quoted Sprout rates, two Essentials seats would be $198 per month. These calculations do not establish equivalent feature sets: compare the plans that meet your needs, and confirm live prices and packaging before deciding.
#1 Best Overall
Which one fits your publishing and approval workflow?
Buffer for a direct publishing workflow
Buffer centers on scheduling and publishing across connected channels. Its Team plan is the more relevant option when several people need access: the comparison and pricing materials describe unlimited users, approval workflows, and access controls. That can make channel-based pricing attractive when the team is larger than the number of channels it manages.
Sprout Social for coordinated team work
Sprout presents its publishing tools for teams coordinating calendars, campaigns, and approvals. The comparison places approval workflows at Professional and higher, so check the specific plan requirements before assuming that the workflow you want is included. If several seats are needed, include them all in the estimate.
Rank #2
How much analytics and reporting do you need?
Buffer’s plan materials describe performance overviews, reports, Insights, and AI takeaways. Some analytics history and advanced functions vary by plan. This is a practical fit when the goal is to understand and improve routine channel performance without building a large reporting operation.

Sprout’s comparison describes profile and post reporting at lower tiers, with competitor, paid-social, and stakeholder reporting available at higher tiers. Premium Analytics is listed as an add-on in its pricing material. If leadership or clients need broader reporting, identify the exact reports and add-ons required before comparing plan prices.
Does your team need a shared inbox or social listening?
Buffer’s Community inbox supports comment management. The comparison does not describe it as handling direct messages and mentions in the same way as Sprout’s Smart Inbox. Sprout’s materials describe unified inbox capabilities and keyword monitoring; Listening is listed as an add-on. These differences matter when social accounts are part of customer support or brand monitoring, rather than just publishing channels.
Before choosing, list the interactions your team must handle—such as comments, direct messages, and mentions—and confirm that the relevant channel types and inbox functions are included in the specific plan. Do the same for listening terms, monitoring scope, and any add-on charges.
Rank #4
Which social networks and integrations matter?
Buffer’s pricing materials list Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Threads, Bluesky, Substack, and Mastodon, along with integrations including Canva, Google Drive and Photos, Zapier, Make, n8n, and several AI tools. Sprout’s comparison describes WhatsApp support and deeper YouTube integration. Because account types and features can differ by network, verify that the exact profiles and actions you rely on are supported by the plan you are considering.
Which tool fits your organization?
Solo creator or solopreneur
Start with Buffer if its free allowance or per-channel pricing covers your publishing needs and you want accessible performance insights. Count the profiles you need and check whether the free tier’s post limit and single-user access are sufficient.
Best Value
Small business or growing team
Buffer is a likely fit when scheduling, comment management, and collaboration are the main jobs. Price the channels you manage and consider whether Team’s unlimited-user model suits your staffing. Move Sprout higher on the shortlist if inbox coverage, listening, or broader reporting is a working requirement rather than a future possibility.
Mid-size team or agency
Compare Buffer’s per-channel total with Sprout’s per-seat total at your actual scale. Then weigh Buffer’s collaboration features against the value of Sprout’s listening, inbox, and competitor reporting. Sprout’s higher price may be warranted when those capabilities are routinely used; if they are not, you may be paying for capacity the team does not need.
Enterprise social or customer-care operation
Sprout is the stronger candidate when complex workflows, social listening, helpdesk integrations, or advanced reporting are central requirements. Ask for the Enterprise package and a complete account of add-on costs, then validate that the capabilities fit your channels and service process.

What to verify before you subscribe
- Count the billing units. Record each connected channel for Buffer and each person who needs a Sprout seat.
- Map must-have work to plans. Check scheduling, approvals, analytics, inbox coverage, listening, and reporting at the plan level rather than relying on general product descriptions.
- Confirm current pricing and billing terms. Buffer’s figures can depend on channel count and billing schedule. Sprout’s figures above come from a vendor-authored comparison, and the retrieved pricing page was on a staging subdomain.
- Test network-specific needs. Confirm the account types and actions available for each social network and integration you use.
- Assess a trial or migration on your own workflow. Buffer’s comparison describes a 30-day Sprout trial rather than a free-forever plan; check the current trial terms. For a switch, inventory your channels, scheduled content, users, approvals, and reporting needs before making changes.
