An Intel Core i5 does not always need a separate graphics card. Many i5 processors include integrated graphics, but desktop models with an F suffix—such as the Core i5-14400F—require a discrete graphics card for display output. Check the complete model name before buying parts or troubleshooting a blank screen.
What “GPU” means when you’re choosing an i5
A GPU is the graphics processor that produces the image shown on your display. It can be integrated into the CPU, or it can be part of a separate graphics card installed in a desktop PC. Intel refers to the graphics included with some processors as processor graphics.
If an i5 has processor graphics, it can provide display output without a separate card. That does not mean its graphics performance will suit every workload: the presence of graphics hardware alone does not establish how well a particular model handles gaming, rendering, or other demanding tasks.

Desktop i5 models ending in F
For desktop Core processors, Intel’s guidance is explicit: “If your Intel® Core™ Desktop Processor includes the letter F in the product line suffix, then you need to use a discrete graphics card in your system.” Intel also warns that an F-suffix desktop processor will not boot if you rely on the integrated-graphics port instead. See Intel Support’s F-suffix graphics guidance, last reviewed April 28, 2022.

- 10 cores (6 P-cores plus 4 E-cores) and 16 threads
- Performance hybrid architecture integrates two core microarchitectures, prioritizing and distributing workloads to optimize performance
- Up to 4.7 GHz unlocked. 20MB Cache
- Compatible with Intel 600-series (with potential BIOS update) and 700-series chipset-based motherboards
- PCIe 5.0 and 4.0 support. DDR4 and DDR5 Memory support. RM1 thermal solution included. Discrete graphics required.
For example, the Core i5-14400F and Core i5-14600KF are listed among desktop i5 models without Intel processor graphics. If you choose one, include a compatible discrete graphics card in the build plan; do not expect the motherboard’s video connector to provide an image.
Other desktop i5 models
Many desktop i5 models include Intel UHD or HD processor graphics. In those cases, a separate card is not inherently necessary just to get graphics output. Intel’s desktop i5 graphics listing distinguishes models with processor graphics from those without; check the exact model because the Core i5 family name alone does not tell you which graphics hardware is present.

How to check your exact processor
- Find the full CPU model. Check the processor box, invoice, system information, or the PC maker’s specifications. Keep the suffix, such as F or KF, as part of the model name.
- Look up that exact model in Intel’s desktop i5 listing. Confirm whether processor graphics are listed or whether the model appears among those without graphics.
- Use the suffix as a clue, not a substitute for the model lookup. Intel defines F as requiring discrete graphics in its processor naming guide. Suffix meanings vary across product segments, so do not apply desktop guidance automatically to every laptop, embedded processor, or other variant.
- For a laptop, all-in-one, or prebuilt PC, check the complete system specifications too. Confirm the processor and the device maker’s implementation rather than assuming that desktop suffix guidance answers every configuration question.
Intel’s i5 desktop information page was last reviewed February 6, 2025, and its processor naming guide was last reviewed December 9, 2025. Product lists can change, so confirm the specific CPU rather than relying on a general rule about all i5 processors.

If a desktop PC shows no image, first identify the exact CPU model. On an F-suffix processor, confirm that a discrete graphics card is installed and connect the display cable to an output on that card. A motherboard video connector relies on processor graphics, which an F-suffix desktop CPU does not provide. For a model with processor graphics, the motherboard’s display output may be usable, subject to the system’s actual configuration.

Do you need a card for performance?
Whether to add a graphics card to an i5 with processor graphics depends on what you plan to do and on the rest of the system. The Intel model listings establish whether processor graphics are present; they do not provide benchmarks, frame rates, or a workload-specific performance threshold. Choose based on the applications and games you intend to run and compatibility with your system, rather than assuming that every i5 needs the same graphics hardware.
