A battery-management IC can use electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to measure how a cell responds to electrical excitation at selected frequencies. Those measurements can help a battery-management system (BMS) estimate cell condition, but they are not a stand-alone health verdict: temperature, state of charge, chemistry, mechanical stress, and measurement setup all affect impedance.

What EIS measures in a battery

EIS measures a cell’s frequency-dependent electrical response. A BMS applies or uses an AC-like excitation, then measures the resulting voltage and current. The system derives impedance from that response; synchronized measurements matter because the phase relationship between voltage and current is part of the analysis. ST’s L9965x application note and Texas Instruments’ EIS white paper describe this measurement approach.

Because impedance varies with frequency, one measurement at one frequency is only a slice of the cell’s response. Measuring across a frequency range gives the BMS more information for characterization and diagnostics, but interpreting those measurements still requires context and a suitable model.

How an EIS-capable IC fits into the system

The IC is one part of a measurement system, not necessarily a complete battery-health tester. A working design combines excitation, current and voltage sensing, synchronized acquisition, and software or modeling that interprets the resulting data. ST’s functional example includes an application controller, excitation source, sensing blocks, and a five-cell pack. TI describes excitation from either a dedicated source or an existing system component, such as a converter, charger, balancer, precharge circuit, or inverter.

UHANBUT 12V Car Battery Tester, Car Alternator Charging System Analyzer
  • 【Reliable Car Battery Tester】: The alternator tester can accurately determine whether the car battery needs to be replaced or if there is a power outage, and at the same time evaluate the output status of the alternator, clearly presents real-time voltage data, battery health and charging status. It can effectively prevent the battery from being damaged due to overcharging or undercharging, and extend the battery's service life.
  • 【Clear LED Display】: The car battery tester is equipped with a digital display LED screen, which can clearly present the measurement values at night, providing strong assistance for measurement work and allowing you to easily read the data.
  • 【Easy to Use】: This car battery capacity analysis is simple and convenient. You just need to connect the positive and negative poles correctly to the alternator. Connect the red clip to the positive pole and the black clip to the negative pole. When the battery is fully charged, the "FULL" display will light up. When the battery is too high, the "HIGH" display will light up. When the battery is low, the "LOW" display will light up. When the battery is dead, the "EMPTY" display will light up.
  • 【Protection Features】: The car battery tester includes reverse connection protection and over-voltage protection, which can effectively prevent damage caused by wiring errors. When the positive and negative poles are reversed, the LED display will not show, the "REVERSE" LED will light up and a buzzer alarm will sound. If the voltage exceeds the safety threshold, the "HIGH" indicator will light up immediately, triggering the device's over-voltage protection mechanism.
  • 【Widely Used】: The alternator tester is suitable for measurement in most vehicles equipped with 12V batteries, such as cars, off-road vehicles, trucks, motorcycles, ships, golf carts, lawnmowers, etc. It can meet your diverse testing needs.

Depending on the design, the electronics may make measurements available for further processing or expose calculated values. The application firmware and cell-specific model determine how those values become estimates of state of health (SOH), state of charge (SOC), or diagnostic findings. EIS capability alone does not establish a definitive remaining-life percentage. Analog Devices’ CN0510 reference design and Keysight’s EIS white paper provide further context on EIS measurement and use.

Why impedance is not a universal health score

Impedance is affected by more than aging. ST identifies temperature, SOC, SOH, and mechanical stress as influences. Cell chemistry and measurement conditions also matter when comparing results. A change in measured impedance can therefore be useful evidence, but it does not by itself identify the cause or prove that a cell has passed or failed.

When a laboratory instrument is a better fit

An embedded BMS implementation is intended to integrate with a battery system; a laboratory instrument serves characterization and test workflows. Their frequency ranges and measurement setups should not be treated as interchangeable. Tektronix lists a 1 mHz–10 kHz frequency range and 20 measurement channels for its EA-BIM 20000 series battery impedance meter. Keysight discusses low-impedance EIS in laboratory and manufacturing applications. See the Tektronix instrument specifications and Keysight EIS overview for their respective contexts.

How to choose an EIS approach

  1. Define the use case. Decide whether you need embedded monitoring in a BMS, cell characterization on a bench, or an evaluation setup for a prototype.
  2. Match the measurement range to the cell and application. Check frequency coverage, excitation method and current, sensing capability, and the impedance range under the intended operating conditions.
  3. Verify acquisition and integration details. Confirm synchronization, channel coverage, controller or MCU requirements, and how measurement data is exposed to software.
  4. Plan the interpretation. Determine what cell-specific baseline, calibration, and model will turn impedance data into an SOH, SOC, or diagnostic estimate.
  5. Review safety and qualification requirements. Confirm that the device and design documentation support the intended pack, operating environment, and applicable safety needs.

For example, TI’s design white paper gives an illustrative 100 Ah cell impedance of 500–750 µΩ and notes that 1–2 A peak excitation may be required for ADC measurement. Those are figures from TI’s design example, not universal values for 100 Ah cells. Read the example in context before using it to size a real measurement system.
