The right VPN for Indonesia depends on what you need: a free plan may cover basic browsing privacy, but getting an Indonesian IP address from abroad or trying to stream Indonesian services calls for checking server locations and plan features. No VPN guarantees anonymity or access to every blocked service.

Can a free VPN work in Indonesia?
For basic browsing privacy, a reputable free plan can be a reasonable starting point if its security and privacy terms suit you. Proton says its Free plan has no time, speed, or data-use cap, but that does not mean it includes every paid feature. Proton VPN plan details
For Proton specifically, Top10VPN reports that the free plan has no Indonesian server, does not let users select a server manually, and that its free servers do not support P2P or bypass streaming geo-restrictions. So a no-cost tier may fit ordinary use, but do not assume it can provide an Indonesian IP or serve as a reliable way to watch region-restricted content. Read the free plan’s current terms and verify the location and capabilities you need before relying on it.

When you need an Indonesian IP address
An Indonesian IP requires traffic to exit through a server located in Indonesia. A provider’s Indonesia page can tell you whether it says it offers that location, but it cannot by itself prove that the server is available to your plan, reachable from your network, or fast enough for your needs.

What streaming claims can—and cannot—tell you
Streaming access changes as services update their regional restrictions and VPN detection. Top10VPN reports that its tests found selected paid services accessed Indonesian Netflix, Vidio, Genflix, and Viu, and that ExpressVPN and NordVPN worked for several Indonesia-related streaming services in its review. Before committing, look for recent evidence for the exact platform you want, confirm the relevant plan includes the necessary server, and check the provider’s refund terms.

How to compare VPN plans before subscribing
- Server locations: Check for nearby locations for general use and an Indonesian exit server if you need an Indonesian IP.
- Free-tier limits: Confirm data and time limits, whether you can choose a location, and whether streaming or P2P is supported.
- Privacy and security: Read the provider’s current privacy and security documentation. A VPN changes your network path and visible IP address, but it does not prevent account tracking, cookies, risks on your device, or legal obligations.
- Performance and streaming: Look for tests that identify the reviewer, platform, region, and date. Results are snapshots, not guarantees.
