There is no universally best monitor or TV for RetroPie. Choose a screen with an input and display mode your Raspberry Pi supports, then decide whether you prefer a monitor, a television, or the look of a CRT. The Pi’s model and graphics stack matter as much as the screen; no specific display model is established as a winner here.

What should you check before choosing a display?

Start with the Raspberry Pi model you plan to use and the inputs on the screen. Raspberry Pi’s official Troubleshooting KMS HDMI output guide, whose version history was updated on 2 October 2023, explains that the Pi reads a display’s EDID information to learn which resolutions it supports. A screen and Pi need a compatible output mode; a connector that fits does not by itself guarantee that the desired mode will work.

  • Input: Check whether the screen has an HDMI input. If it does not, you may need an adapter or converter, and compatibility will depend on the particular devices and signal involved.
  • Supported modes: Check the modes supported by both the screen and your Pi rather than assuming the highest resolution listed for one will work with the other.
  • Presentation: Decide whether you want a modern monitor or TV, or are pursuing a CRT look. Also consider the shape of the screen and how you want older games to appear on it.

Resolution and refresh-rate capability describe what the hardware can output; they do not establish that higher resolution will improve RetroPie gameplay or performance.

How do Raspberry Pi HDMI capabilities vary by model?

The same official Raspberry Pi guide gives these output capabilities. They are hardware capabilities, not a ranking of which screen will look or play best.

Raspberry Pi generation HDMI connectors Output information in Raspberry Pi’s guide
Raspberry Pi 3 and earlier One full-size HDMI port The guide states a capability of 1920 × 1200 at 60 Hz.
Raspberry Pi 4 Two micro HDMI ports Depending on setup, HDMI 0 can reach 4Kp60. When two 4K displays are used, the guide states that both are limited to p30.
Raspberry Pi 5 Two micro HDMI ports The guide states that both ports can achieve 4Kp60 simultaneously.

For Raspberry Pi 4 and 5, connector type and simultaneous-display limits differ from the older generation. Confirm the port and mode for your own setup rather than treating “4K support” as one identical capability across models.

Should you use a monitor or a television?

Both can be reasonable choices if the screen has a compatible HDMI input and mode. The choice is mainly about your setup and presentation preferences, not a demonstrated performance advantage for one category.

  • Consider a monitor if its size, shape, and placement suit your gaming setup and it supports a mode your Pi can output.
  • Consider a TV if you want to play on a television-sized screen and it accepts a compatible HDMI signal. A television may need to be manually switched to the correct input before the Pi can read its display information.

A Raspberry Pi community support result titled “HDMI on Monitor but Not TV” illustrates that display behavior can differ between screens. It is an individual support example, not evidence that monitors are generally more compatible than TVs.

What if you want to use a CRT?

A CRT may appeal if its appearance is part of the experience you want, but compatibility depends on the particular Pi, CRT input, adapter or converter, and video mode. The available evidence does not establish a universal CRT setup for RetroPie.

One RetroPie community discussion, “Retro Pie & CRT – Issues & options?”, describes screen-edge cropping and points toward overscan adjustment. Treat that as an example of a possible setup issue, not a guaranteed fix: an overscan setting that helps one display may not suit another. The discussion does not establish a configuration that works across CRTs and adapters.

What should you do if the screen is blank or not detected?

  1. Turn on the display and select the HDMI input connected to the Pi. The display may need to be active on that input for its EDID information to be read.
  2. Check the physical connection. Reseat the cable and, if available, try another HDMI port on the display or another cable. A defective cable or port can prevent detection.
  3. Check the setup’s supported mode. Confirm that the display supports a mode available from your particular Pi and that the selected input is the one connected to it.
  4. Note when the picture disappears. If boot content appears and the screen goes black as the graphics system takes control, EDID-reading problems are one possibility described in Raspberry Pi’s guide. That symptom alone does not identify the cause.
  5. Check which graphics stack and software version you use before applying old configuration advice. Raspberry Pi’s KMS guide and config.txt documentation describe differences between legacy firmware control, FKMS, and KMS; the guide states that Bookworm does not support the Legacy or FKMS graphics stacks.

Older settings such as hdmi_force_hotplug are not universal remedies for current KMS systems. Raspberry Pi notes that settings from older graphics stacks may not be implemented under KMS, so do not copy legacy configuration snippets without confirming that they apply to your software stack.
