Choose an app idea that solves one small, familiar problem for one kind of person. You can learn Swift, build a prototype, and test it on your own Apple devices without paying for Apple Developer Program membership. Membership becomes relevant when you are ready to distribute your app, including through TestFlight or the App Store.
What app should you make first?
Start with a problem you understand firsthand, then keep the first version focused on one repeated task and one user type. A useful beginner project should be small enough to prototype and easy to explain: someone should be able to try it and quickly show whether it helps.
Possible starter ideas—not validated business opportunities or Apple recommendations—include:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- A habit tracker for one particular routine.
- A shared grocery list for one household.
- A neighborhood walking log.
- A personal flashcard tool for a subject you are studying.
To choose among ideas, consider the size of a useful first version, whether its main feature works without accounts or paid APIs, how sensitive its data would be, whether you can reach likely testers, and how quickly a prototype can show its benefit. These are practical selection criteria, not Apple-published benchmarks.

Check the idea before building much
Sketch the main screen or make a rough interactive prototype. Show it to people who match the intended user type, and ask them to complete the app’s core task. Watch where they get stuck and whether the prototype helps them finish. Use what they actually do to narrow the idea; positive reactions alone do not establish demand or profitability.
Can you build an iPhone app without knowing how to code?
You can begin learning without prior coding experience, but making a working app involves learning at least some programming concepts. Apple’s Develop in Swift tutorials introduce Swift and Xcode and cover topics including app design, SwiftUI, data modeling, app development, and distribution.
Rank #2
Apple also describes Swift Playgrounds as a way for people new to coding to explore Swift, SwiftUI, and app APIs. App playgrounds can be created and submitted from an iPad or Mac. For interactive lessons, Apple’s Playground Books documentation explains that format.

Not for every learning route. Xcode is Apple’s development environment and is downloaded from the Mac App Store, so the Xcode path requires access to a Mac. Swift Playgrounds supports app creation on iPad or Mac, giving beginners another way to explore and build. Check Apple’s current tool requirements before choosing hardware; the sources cited here do not establish that a particular Mac model or configuration is necessary.

If you already have an iPad, Swift Playgrounds can be a starting point. If you want to follow the Xcode tutorials and workflow, plan on using a compatible Mac. Apple provides free tutorials and interactive learning materials, so buying a printed book is optional.
Do you have to pay Apple to start making an app?
No. Apple says you can download Xcode and begin developing and testing apps on your personal devices without enrolling in the Apple Developer Program. Learning, building, and personal-device testing are distinct from distributing an app to other people.
Membership matters when you are ready to use distribution resources such as TestFlight and App Store Connect. Apple’s membership comparison lists the price as US$99 per membership year; local-currency pricing is available where offered, and eligible nonprofits, educational institutions, and government entities may qualify for a fee waiver. Check Apple’s current membership comparison for your country and eligibility, since pricing and terms can change.

What happens when you are ready to distribute?
Plan on a transition from learning and personal testing to preparing a release. Apple’s Programs overview distinguishes development from the resources associated with distribution. Its App Store Connect workflow covers setting up an app record, uploading builds, beta testing with TestFlight, submitting for App Review, and monitoring performance or sales.
- Build the smallest useful version. Focus on the single task you chose rather than adding accounts, integrations, or features before they are needed.
- Test the core task. Try it yourself and ask likely users to complete that task with the prototype. Apple’s App Store Pathway recommends thorough testing and planning a business model early.
- Join when distribution is the goal. Enroll in the Apple Developer Program when you need distribution resources such as TestFlight and App Store Connect, rather than treating membership as a prerequisite to learn or prototype.
- Prepare the release in App Store Connect. Set up the app record and upload the build, then use TestFlight for beta distribution and submit for Apple’s review before App Store distribution.
Apple reviews apps before distribution. Planning a business model early does not mean you need to monetize a beginner project; it means thinking through how the app could be sustained if you intend to release it.
