A chrome door viewer lets you see who is outside without opening the door. Choose one by checking the door’s thickness, the required hole size, its viewing design, and whether it includes a privacy cover—not by finish or advertised angle alone. A viewer can inform your decision about opening the door, but it does not guarantee safety or prevent burglary.
What to check before choosing a chrome peephole
“Chrome” can mean polished, bright, satin, or brushed chrome, and the names and appearance vary by product. Match the exact finish to your other door hardware, then check the product page for your market. For example, ASSA ABLOY lists polished chrome for its AA77CP viewer on its Ireland product page; its New Zealand pages list satin chrome for the MC96. Regional listings do not establish availability elsewhere.
- Door thickness: Measure the door where the viewer will be installed, and confirm the model’s stated range and any required extensions.
- Hole or bore size: Check the required opening before buying. A viewer that suits the thickness may still require a different hole diameter.
- Viewing design: Compare the manufacturer-stated angle and optical design. A larger angle figure alone does not establish a clearer or more useful image.
- Privacy: Find out whether a cover is built in, sold separately, or unavailable for that model. Confirm that any add-on fits the viewer already installed.
- Installation and certification: Follow the current instructions for the exact product. Verify any certification claims against current documentation, especially when a catalog may be old.
How example models differ
These specifications illustrate why the exact model matters. They are manufacturer or catalog descriptions, not independent tests. Verify current regional availability, installation requirements, and product details before ordering.
| Model | Finish and construction | Fit and viewing details | Privacy information |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASSA ABLOY AA77CP | Polished chrome; glass lens, according to the Ireland product page | The cited regional page does not establish a thickness range or opening size. | The cited regional page does not establish whether a cover is included. |
| Rockwood 627/628/629 | Brass viewer; bright chrome is listed as an option | Product page states a 190-degree field of view and a 9/16-inch installation hole. Confirm the details for the specific model. | The cited page does not establish whether a cover is included. |
| PRO-LOK 190° 1/2-inch viewer | Solid brass construction; chrome or polished-brass finish options | Product description states a scratch-resistant wide-angle lens and 190-degree viewing angle. Confirm the required opening and door-thickness range for the exact listing. | The cited source does not establish whether a cover is included. |
| Peephole Security MiniScope (14D914C) | Polished brass, chrome, or antique copper, according to the catalog | Catalog states 200 degrees, a 15 mm bore, and doors 3/4 to 1 3/8 inches thick. | Catalog says a privacy cover is included. It also describes the model as UL fire rated in the US and Canada; verify current certification, specifications, and availability because the catalog may be old. |
| Peephole Security PEEKO (60M180) | Stamped brass; polished chrome, brass, and antique brass finishes are listed | Specification sheet states doors 1 to 1 3/4 inches thick, a 2 3/8-inch opening, and a 140- to 180-degree view range. The sheet says specifications may change; confirm the opening dimension and installation instructions for the exact product. | The cited sheet does not establish whether a cover is included. |
Do not treat these figures as directly comparable without checking how each manufacturer defines its viewing angle and dimensions. The product pages do not establish that a higher advertised angle produces better image quality.

What size door viewer do you need?
Measure the door thickness and identify the existing hole diameter before choosing. Compare both measurements with the model’s current installation sheet. If there is no hole, follow the stated bore size and installation method; if a hole already exists, confirm that it matches the new viewer rather than assuming it can be reused.
- Measure the door thickness at the intended location.
- Measure the existing opening, if there is one, and compare it with the product’s required hole or bore size.
- Check whether the viewer covers that thickness directly or requires an extension piece.
- Confirm the current installation instructions for the exact model, finish, and market before drilling or fitting it.
The examples above have materially different stated requirements: the MiniScope catalog describes a 15 mm bore and 3/4- to 1 3/8-inch door range, while the PEEKO sheet gives a 1- to 1 3/4-inch door range and a 2 3/8-inch opening. Those figures are product-specific; verify them with current instructions rather than applying them to other viewers.

Decide whether you need a privacy cover
A cover can block the view through the viewer from inside when it is not being used. Some models include one; others may accept a separate accessory. The Privacy Logic SPEYEGUARD fixed cover is described in satin, polished, and brushed chrome finishes and as compatible with standard 3/8- and 5/8-inch viewers. It installs over an existing viewer, but the stated compatibility should be checked against the actual product and installed cylinder dimensions.

Do not infer that a cover fits because its finish matches the viewer. Confirm the viewer size and the accessory’s compatibility before purchase.

When a digital viewer may be a better fit
The EZVIZ HP2 is a battery-powered, wire-free digital peephole-viewer alternative, not a chrome optical viewer. Its product page does not establish chrome finish or universal compatibility. Consider it only after checking its current fit requirements against your door and the product’s specifications.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a door viewer can—and cannot—do
A viewer lets an occupant look outside while the door stays closed, which can help inform the decision to open it. ASSA ABLOY describes its standard viewer in those terms on its Ireland product page. The cited product descriptions do not establish that a viewer prevents burglary or guarantees personal safety, so it should not be treated as a substitute for other appropriate precautions.
