1 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) is an Ethernet link with a nominal rate of 1,000 megabits per second (1 Gb/s). That figure describes the link’s signaling rate, not a guaranteed download or file-copy speed. The specific physical connection matters too: 1000BASE-T uses copper twisted-pair cabling, while other Gigabit Ethernet variants use different physical implementations.
What does 1 Gigabit Ethernet mean?
Ethernet is specified by IEEE 802.3. The standard covers selected operating rates and physical media using a common media-access-control specification; its PHY variants define the signaling and medium for particular links. IEEE describes the 802.3-2022 standard as covering selected speeds from 1 Mb/s to 400 Gb/s. IEEE 802.3-2022
“Gigabit Ethernet” identifies the nominal 1,000 Mb/s speed class. Labels such as 1000BASE-T and 1000BASE-SX identify specific physical-layer implementations within that class. They are not interchangeable cable or port labels. IEEE 802.3-2022 PHY listing IEEE Technology Navigator
How fast is 1 Gb/s in megabytes per second?
By unit conversion, 1 Gb/s equals 125 megabytes per second (MB/s), because one byte contains eight bits. That is arithmetic, not a promise that a computer will transfer files at 125 MB/s over a 1 Gb/s connection.

- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
The nominal Ethernet rate includes link-layer signaling, and network and transport protocols add overhead. The endpoints, storage, workload, and network congestion can further limit application throughput. A port showing a 1 Gb/s link rate therefore does not establish the speed of a download, upload, or file copy.
What does full duplex mean for a Gigabit Ethernet link?
A full-duplex link can transmit and receive at the same time. The nominal 1 Gb/s rate applies in each direction; adding both directions together and calling the result a 2 Gb/s user data rate would be misleading. IEEE’s Gigabit Ethernet PHY listing includes full-duplex specifications. IEEE 802.3-2022 PHY listing

What cable does Gigabit Ethernet use?
1000BASE-T over copper
1000BASE-T is the familiar copper twisted-pair implementation. A Gigabit Ethernet Alliance technical paper discusses 1000BASE-T over Category 5 copper cabling. Check the port and cable requirements for the equipment at both ends rather than assuming every cable or Ethernet connection uses the same physical standard. Gigabit Ethernet Alliance technical paper
Other Gigabit Ethernet physical layers
Gigabit Ethernet also includes 1000BASE-X variants such as 1000BASE-SX, 1000BASE-LX, and 1000BASE-CX. These are distinct physical implementations, so the label on a port or transceiver—and the medium it is designed for—matters when selecting a connection. IEEE 802.3-2022 PHY listing

How to interpret a device’s Gigabit Ethernet rating
- Check the link type: 1000BASE-T and 1000BASE-X identify different physical implementations.
- Check both ends: the equipment’s ports and the cable or other medium must be compatible.
- Separate link rate from application speed: 1 Gb/s is the nominal Ethernet rate, not a measured file-transfer result.
- Compare like with like: when assessing throughput, use the same endpoints, workload, and direction, and distinguish the negotiated link rate from useful application data.
