Choose based on what you want generated: use openapi-typescript for TypeScript declarations, add openapi-fetch for typed calls through a fetch-oriented client, or use OpenAPI Generator when you want generated client code and configurable SDK output. These tools operate at different layers, so the right choice depends on how much of the request layer your team wants to own.

The first two rows are a type-generation tool on its own and a documented combination of two packages—not interchangeable names for a single client. The openapi-fetch guide shows how generated paths types are supplied to the client.
Choose by how much request behavior you want to own
Use openapi-typescript for types only
Choose this when the main goal is to derive TypeScript declarations from the OpenAPI document. Your team remains responsible for making requests, handling responses, and integrating the declarations with any existing request code or compatible client.

Choose the combination when you want endpoint calls checked against the generated schema without generating a larger client library. The companion client checks paths, parameters, and request bodies, and types the returned data and error results. Its guide describes data for successful 2xx responses and error for 4xx/5xx responses or a configured default error response.

Select an OpenAPI Generator target for generated code
OpenAPI Generator is the option to evaluate when the desired artifact is client code rather than only declarations, and when target configuration or mappings matter. It supports multiple generators, so inspect the specific TypeScript target instead of treating all TypeScript output as equivalent.
Check the OpenAPI Generator target’s maturity
The official documentation accessed October 7, 2026, labels the generic typescript generator as experimental, while typescript-fetch is stable. Those labels apply to the named targets, not to TypeScript client generation as a whole. Recheck the target’s current documentation before adopting it because stability labels and supported options can change.

The typescript generator page and typescript-fetch generator page document their respective targets. The CLI usage guide, last updated June 21, 2026, describes selecting a generator and passing options with a JSON or YAML configuration file; it also documents type and import mappings for supported generators.
