For most first-time buyers who want outdoor aerial photos, the DJI Mini 4K is the clearest starting point. Choose the DJI Neo instead for close-range selfies and follow-me-style creative shots; choose the Ryze Tello for basic indoor flight practice. The evidence supports these three distinct uses, not five equally comparable recommendations—so this guide focuses on matching a drone to the job rather than padding a top-five list.
Which kind of beginner drone do you need?
Decide first what you want the drone to capture. A camera drone for landscapes, a compact aircraft for nearby selfie-style footage, and an indoor trainer solve different problems. A low weight or an advertised maximum flight time does not make a drone crash-proof or remove local flight rules.

The Mini 4K is the most straightforward match if you want conventional outdoor camera-drone footage. DJI describes it as an under-249 g aircraft with intelligent modes and a maximum 31-minute flight time. TechRadar identifies 4K/30p video and 12 MP stills and names it a value pick for first-time aerial photography. DJI’s comparison specifies three-axis mechanical stabilization.

Do not read those features as a promise that the aircraft will avoid obstacles for you. TechRadar notes that it has no collision avoidance and may struggle in properly windy conditions. Its 31-minute figure is DJI’s controlled-environment maximum; wind, flight style and other conditions can make an actual session shorter. DJI’s product page carries both Mini 4K and Mini 2 SE branding, so check that a listing and its specifications refer to the Mini 4K rather than assuming a shared page describes every model detail.
Best for selfies and close-range creative shots: DJI Neo
DJI positions Neo for close-range creative shots and recording everyday activities, while its comparison positions Mini 4K for landscape photography and extended flight times. Neo is the more natural fit when you want footage centered on yourself or nearby activity rather than a conventional aerial-photo workflow.

DJI’s support specifications list 4K/30 fps video, up to 12 MP photos and an approximately 135 g takeoff weight. The listed flight time is approximately 18 minutes, reduced to approximately 17 minutes with propeller guards. DJI gives controlled-condition caveats for these figures, so treat them as specifications rather than a forecast of usable time on every outing.

Best for indoor basics: Ryze Tello
The Tello is a narrower option for learning basic flight indoors, not a substitute for an outdoor 4K camera drone. TechRadar describes it as beginner-friendly, with rotor guards and stability sensors, but its video is 720p. In TechRadar’s testing, effective range was shorter than the official maximum, and wind could carry it off course. Those limitations matter if you expect to use it outdoors or make polished camera footage.

What to check before you buy
Match the controls and camera to your goal
Think about whether you want controller-based flying and landscape framing, or close-range automated, palm- or app-based capture. The cited material establishes the Mini 4K versus Neo difference in intended use, but does not establish one universal best choice for every new pilot.
Do not assume obstacle protection
Propeller guards and obstacle sensing are different things. TechRadar flags the Mini 4K’s lack of collision avoidance; the available sources do not establish that obstacle sensing is universal across beginner drones. Leave room around people, trees, buildings and other aircraft, and learn the controls before attempting complex shots.

Compare the complete package, not just the aircraft
Bundle contents vary. Before checkout, confirm whether the exact package includes a controller, batteries, propeller guards, storage or other accessories. DJI’s Neo support page lists batteries and other accessories, but that does not mean a particular retail bundle includes them. Check compatibility before buying spare batteries or replacement propellers, and confirm the selected model’s storage support before choosing a memory card.
Budget for the configuration you will actually use
The cited sources do not establish current prices or a like-for-like total cost for these options. Compare the full contents and price of the specific listings available to you; a base aircraft and a bundle with extra batteries are not equivalent purchases.

US rules still apply to lightweight drones
This guidance is specific to the United States; pilots elsewhere should check their national aviation authority’s current rules. The FAA’s Getting Started page, last updated December 19, 2024, says recreational flyers must learn the rules and take The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST). It says drones greater than 0.55 pounds (250 g) and less than 55 pounds must be registered, and points flyers to B4UFLY for airspace restrictions. Check current FAA guidance before flying.
Under the FAA’s recreational flyer rules, recreational pilots must keep the drone within visual line of sight (or fly with a co-located visual observer), yield to other aircraft and follow applicable safety requirements. A drone that must be registered generally must also broadcast Remote ID, subject to exceptions such as operation in a Federally Recognized Identification Area. The FAA says compensation alone does not determine whether a flight is recreational; when the purpose is uncertain, its guidance is: “When in doubt, assume Part 107.”
Being under 250 g does not mean a drone can be flown anywhere or without operational restrictions. Check airspace and the rules that apply to the location and purpose of each flight.
