The right programming language depends on the work you want to do—not on a popularity ranking or a promise of employment. For a broad starting shortlist, consider Python, JavaScript or TypeScript, Java, C#, and Go. Reorder them according to the roles and employers you are targeting; the available evidence does not establish language-specific job counts or guarantee a job with any one language.
How to use this shortlist
These five languages are a practical selection based on developer use and ecosystem activity, not a measured ranking of vacancies. The signals also come from different sources: Stack Overflow surveys developers about technologies they use, while GitHub reports activity on its platform. Neither is a count of job openings.
In Stack Overflow’s 2026 technology results, JavaScript was used by 62.0% of respondents, Python by 58.0%, TypeScript by 43.8%, Java by 27.6%, and C# by 27.1%. These are survey use figures, not the share of job advertisements mentioning each language. Stack Overflow 2026 Developer Survey

The employment context is broader still: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 10% employment growth for software developers, quality assurance analysts, and testers from 2025 to 2035, with about 106,100 openings per year on average across that occupational group. Those figures are U.S.-specific and are not broken down by programming language. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational outlook

Five languages and the kinds of work they fit
Python: data, automation, scripting, and AI-oriented development
Python is a reasonable choice if you are drawn to data work, automating repetitive tasks, scripting, or AI-oriented development. It was one of the leading languages in Stack Overflow’s 2026 use results, but that survey measures respondent use rather than employer demand. If Python is your starting point, the official Python tutorial is a free learning resource.
JavaScript and TypeScript: web development across browser and server
JavaScript is used for browser-based web development and can also be used on the server side. TypeScript is another prominent part of this ecosystem. The measures tell different stories: JavaScript led Stack Overflow’s 2026 language-use results, while GitHub reported that TypeScript became its most-used language in August 2025 and gained more than one million contributors over the preceding year. These are distinct measures of use and platform activity, not evidence that one language has more vacancies. Stack Overflow survey results · GitHub’s analysis of fast-growing tools

Java: enterprise applications and long-lived systems
Java is worth considering for enterprise applications and established application ecosystems. It appears among the leading technologies in Stack Overflow’s 2026 results. That supports its continued presence in developer use, but the cited figures do not count Java-specific job openings.

C#: applications in Microsoft and .NET ecosystems
C# is a natural candidate if the roles and projects you are considering center on Microsoft technologies or .NET application development. Its presence in Stack Overflow’s 2026 results is an ecosystem signal, not a ranking of labor demand.
Go: backend services and infrastructure-oriented work
Go is a candidate for backend services and infrastructure-oriented development. GitHub includes it among its top languages and reports ecosystem growth signals. Platform activity does not establish how many Go jobs are available, particularly in your region or at entry level.
How to decide which one to learn first
- Choose a target kind of work. Start with a role or domain—such as web development, data work, enterprise applications, or infrastructure—rather than with an abstract popularity contest.
- Check the local market and target employers. Review current postings where you intend to work and note the languages employers actually request. This is the most relevant way to reorder the shortlist for your situation.
- Compare the surrounding ecosystem. Look at the tools, documentation, and learning resources available for the language and role you chose. A widely used language can offer a substantial learning ecosystem, but use alone does not tell you whether a particular job market is hiring.
- Build something you can show. Choose a project that lets you practice the work you want to do. Your interest in the project and ability to complete and explain it matter alongside the language choice.
- Keep learning beyond one language. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that developers need to keep up to date on tools and computer languages. A first language is a starting point, not a permanent boundary.
What popularity figures can—and cannot—tell you
Stack Overflow reported that 52% of its 2026 survey respondents had acquired a new coding skill or learned a programming language. That is a survey finding about respondents, not a forecast of hiring or proof that every developer must learn a new language each year. Stack Overflow’s 2026 survey release
Rank #4
Survey results and GitHub activity can help indicate whether a language has an active developer community. They cannot establish comparable language-by-language vacancy counts, entry-level demand, or pay returns. Use them to identify candidates, then make the career decision with evidence from your intended location and employers.
