To change automatic drive optimization in Windows 11, search for defrag, open Defragment and Optimize Drives, and select Change Settings under Scheduled optimization. From there, choose the drives and set the schedule to Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or off. Windows schedules optimization once a week by default, according to Microsoft Support.
Change the automatic optimization schedule
- Select the taskbar search box and type defrag.
- Open Defragment and Optimize Drives from the search results.
- In the Scheduled optimization section, select Change Settings.
- Choose which drive or drives the schedule should cover.
- Set the frequency to Daily, Weekly, or Monthly. To stop scheduled optimization, turn off the schedule. The dialog also offers an option to increase the frequency if optimization is missed three times.
- Select OK to save the changes.
Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11; the labels above are those shown in the Windows 11 utility. The default schedule is once a week, according to Microsoft Support.
What the schedule does for HDDs and SSDs
Windows uses “optimize” as an umbrella term, but the operation depends on the drive type. For a hard disk drive (HDD), optimization defragments the drive by reorganizing file data. For a solid-state drive (SSD), Windows uses trim, which tells the drive where it can safely perform cleanup when it is not busy. Microsoft explains the distinction in its drive optimization guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRun optimization manually or use Storage Sense
Run optimization now
In Defragment and Optimize Drives, select a drive and choose Optimize to start its operation manually. Microsoft lists drive optimization among general performance steps, but does not promise a specific speed improvement or that it will fix every slow PC. See Microsoft’s performance guidance.

Free up storage space
Scheduled drive optimization is not a storage-cleanup schedule. Storage Sense can automatically free space by removing unneeded items such as temporary files and Recycle Bin contents; it is a separate Windows setting. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance.
