The best surround speakers for a TV depend on what you already own, how much room you have, and whether you want a simple soundbar package or a system you can build from separate components. Start by choosing the system architecture, then confirm compatibility and placement before buying: a rear-speaker pair that does not work with your soundbar, or a system your TV cannot connect to properly, will not deliver the setup you want.
Which kind of TV surround system should you choose?
There are two main approaches: a soundbar-based package, or an AV receiver connected to separate speakers. Dolby’s home theater setup guide describes both. Neither is automatically better; the right choice depends on the room, cable tolerance, equipment, and appetite for expansion.

A soundbar can operate without satellite surrounds, so do not assume a bar advertised with surround processing includes physical rear speakers. For either approach, compare what is actually in the box with what you will need to complete the system.

Before choosing a candidate, check these points against the manufacturer’s current specifications:
- Included components: Confirm whether the price and package cover the soundbar or receiver, front and center speakers, subwoofer, and physical rear speakers. Note which pieces are optional add-ons.
- Channel layout: Read the full channel notation and identify whether the system has discrete rear speakers and, if desired, height speakers. Channel count alone does not establish sound quality.
- Exact compatibility: For add-on surrounds, verify the exact soundbar or receiver model they support. Do not infer compatibility from a shared brand name.
- Connections and formats: Check the TV and system ports, supported audio formats, source-device routing, and any cable included or required. HDMI ARC/eARC, optical and speaker-wire requirements vary by model.
- Room and power: Make sure you can position the speakers around the listening area and provide power where required. A product described as wireless may still need power cables or a particular transmitter.
- Expansion: If you expect to change speakers or add channels later, confirm what the receiver or soundbar platform actually supports.
Examples of model-specific compatibility
LG’s Sound Suite page describes combinations of its wireless speakers, soundbar and subwoofer. Direct connection of M5 or M7 speakers to a TV depends on Dolby Atmos FlexConnect support on specified LG TV models; the page says an H7 Soundbar can provide that feature when a TV is unsupported or from another brand. These conditions apply to the named LG products and supported models, not wireless speakers generally.

Klipsch says its Surround 3 speakers are designed for selected Klipsch soundbars, naming Cinema 600, Cinema 800 and BAR 48. The product page describes a pre-paired USB transmitter and tabletop or wall-mount placement. Check the current product information and availability before buying; the example illustrates why a rear-speaker add-on must match the exact bar.

What do surround channel numbers mean?
In Dolby’s channel notation, the first number counts ear-level speakers, the second counts subwoofers, and a third number—when present—counts height speakers. For example, 5.1 means five main speakers and one subwoofer; 5.1.2 adds two height speakers. The notation describes the layout, not a guarantee of better sound or a substitute for checking which speakers are physically included. See Dolby’s Atmos speaker setup guide.

Surround playback and Dolby Atmos are not interchangeable claims. Atmos playback requires support from the relevant source or device and the audio playback system, as well as compatible content. Check the complete path—TV, streaming or other source, connections and sound system—rather than relying on the word “surround” in a product description.
How should you place the speakers?
Place surround speakers to the sides of or behind the listening position, following the system maker’s layout guidance and adapting to the room. Dolby recommends placing the main speakers near seated ear height; stands can help when furniture is too low. Wall mounting can work but offers less flexibility for experimenting with position.

Placement by speaker role
- Center speaker: Place it near the TV, as Dolby’s setup guidance recommends.
- Surround speakers: Position them to the side or behind the listener, rather than beside the TV with the front speakers.
- Height or upward-firing speakers: Upward-firing designs depend on ceiling reflections, so room and ceiling conditions affect how they work.
Room geometry and reflections influence the result. If the sound is poorly balanced, adjust placement and consult the manufacturer’s setup directions rather than assuming a different channel count will solve it.

Check both ends of the connection: the TV port, the soundbar or receiver port, supported audio formats, the route from any streaming box or game console, and the cables supplied. The Dolby home theater guide covers HDMI and speaker-wire needs and notes that some configurations offer wireless options. Exact requirements depend on the equipment.

For HDMI eARC, cable capability can matter for high-quality audio formats; Sony’s HDMI cable support guidance flags this consideration. Check the specifications for the TV and audio system before buying a cable; there is no single cable recommendation established for every setup. HDMI cables connect compatible components, speaker wire serves wired speakers, and cable-management accessories can make a wired installation tidier.
